The Patriots like claiming guys off waivers when they already have an open roster spot. The three claims recently have filled the spots from Hurd’s retirement and Nixon and Thornton going on IR. With all of the new practice squad flexibility, it makes sense to use active roster spots for waiver claims and trade acquisitions while handling free agent signings via the practice squad instead.

So he goes to the 53, Zappe is activated to the 53 for game 1, Corral is the "freebie" on the game day active list as the 3rd QB, and Zappe is still #2

Had a high ankle sprain so he didn't run at the combine or pro day. More of a pocket guy though from the scouting reports, which are generally very positive

Live arm for his stature and accurate with quick release. So-so decision making and deep ball skills.

He is much more mobile and has a much better arm. Definitely an upgrade over Zappe.
At one point he was thought to be an end of round 1 qb

I am all for adding potential talent at QB. On the surface this signing does not bring in the veteran QB to be a reliable backup and provide a mentor for Mac. Is there room for 3 developmental QB's, or is Zappe in danger of getting cut from the PS once Corral learns the playbook?

Did not see this one coming. But absolutely bodes badly for Zappe.
Maybe they just want M's for QB's - Mac, Matt, Malik
I would still prefer an older vet who isn't chasing dreams of starting, but we'll see if Corral even sticks more than a week or two.
