Patriots Sign WR Corey Coleman

Glad to see a Bills' media personality who presumably has no background in psychology or education is capable of identifying and describing the 'learning style' of someone who he, in all likelihood, barely knows. Not to mention that the whole 'learning style' phenomenon seems to be largely a myth based on current research.

Cool.

Usually, drafted players sign 4 year contracts, so they never get the chance to be a RFA which is the applicable status when a player’s contract expires after having 3 years of experience and is given a RFA tender by his team. In Coleman’s case, The Patriots would only need to offer an “original round “ tender to give them the right of refusal or a 1st round pick if they decide not to match the offer.

Essentially, if the Patriots want to retain him for the 2019 season, they can do so and at a pretty low cost.

He was cut - hence became a FA. I don't understand how can a player become RFA after he's already been FA and both parties had all the freedom to sign any contract they like..?

Tons of potential....but if he didn’t grab Bills offense quick....nervous as to how well he will succeed here.....also that Hard Knocks video out there is a little damning....he better become a lot sharper with his route running, get tough.....and get more HUMBLE!! In short.....he needs to learn how to become a PATRIOT......Quick!

Belichick looks at players in terms of what they can do, not what they can’t. Coleman, like pretty much every first rounder, has real athletic strengths. He will try to use him for that and get what they can out of it. If he’s a problem he will be gone. Hopefully it works out.

I will not look to the Jills as a standard-setter of a player's value and capability.

Especially if it's an appraisal from Daboll

All that matters is that a player has three accrued seasons, which is most common with UDFAs since they sign three year contracts. Drafted players have to be cut and clear waivers in order to hit restricted free agency since their original contracts are for four years.

There's actually a perfect (and unfortunate) comparison to be made with Dominique Easley. He played two years with the Patriots, was cut and cleared waivers, then signed a one year deal with the Rams. That one year contract expired with him having three accrued seasons rather than the four needed to be unrestricted.

Rams place tender on RFA Dominique Easley

He will have 3 accrued nfl seasons. If he had less, he would be an exclusive rights free agent. Another season and he would be unrestricted.

It doesn't matter how many times he was traded or cut. All that matters are accrued seasons.

You're saying he was fast at some point? He's the one guy Rich Eisen can beat in the 40.

I'm saying he's been dead for 8 years, and probably doesn't have that cat-like quickness anymore.

I was watching some film on him and I don’t think he’s a poor route runner. He can run the basics in the route tree ok. Whether he picks up the more complex stuff is another matter.

How do you mean he'll be RFA? Only UDFAs can be RFAs. More importantly he already became FA when he was cut.

Not true. Anyone who has 2 vested years in the league when their contract expires becomes an RFA. Any player who is cut after their 1st year and signs with another team on a 1 year deal becomes an RFA after that deal expires.

If his attitude doesn’t suck, and he has work ethic they can bring him along slowly, as they did a Dorsett, it’s just hard to see the lightbulb going off and him suddenly understanding everything it takes to be a pro football player. Hope it works out.

Ultimately this is about the only way they ever get high 1st round picks, might as well enjoy it.

I've never understood why the Pats have never been able to effectively utilize some of these athletically gifted but mentally limited WRs. It's not like everyone has to achieve the required mind meld with Brady - can't you have someone like Coleman running a very limited route tree (some go routes and some hitches) that don't require a lot of thinking? If he's fast and can still catch, the opponents have to respect him with their fastest corner and maybe a safety over the top even if you don't throw to him all that much.

I’m sad we signed this guy over Dez, I’m sure he would sign with the pats for cheap to prove a point, guys with a chip on their shoulders will generally play very well for a season until they get a decent size contract.
I’m sure someone will eventually pick up Dez.

Complete Darkhorse but I wouldnt be shocked if we traded Hogan.
Now hear me out appearantly they are far apart on his worth.
Chances are he plays here all season goes on the market sees hes not worth what he thinks he is and returns.
However if some injuries mount up for a team its not out of the realm of possibility that he is traded.

So after reading for weeks that our WR group is too thin and unproven lets trade the only established WR we have that doesnt come off an ACL?

Also most likely you wont get anything higher than a sixth or late fifth for Hogan. What's the point in trading him if even the cap relief is not substantial?

They were even talking extension a month back or so. I think you are looking at the wrong horse.

Because not knowing all the plays and option routes automatically disqualifies him from any hurry up, no huddle and redzone package.

An example from our rewatch thread this week. You see how simple this play looks but it is premised on everyone in the WR stack being on the same page, reading their keys correctly and then running the right route?

Cant have someone on the field who cant do this on every snap correctly. And knows his role in case Brady checks to the backup play.

He might get a few snaps this Sunday as decoy running go routes. But that will be about it. At best.

Thanks to all!
Makes no sense to me (once a rookie deal is voided a player should be FA with no more restrictions imo since all teams had every chance to take on his orig. contract and keep him under control) . but as @luuked said at least makes some sense of this signing with only Edelman (and Berrios) signed beyond this season (after they declined Dorsett's option). Im not holding my breath though..

The Patriots have always believed that they can "coach up" a player who has not played to his potential in an other system..

If he is "getting it" as a Pats player, we will know that very soon, probably better to assess Coleman around game #5... stay tuned, be patient.

Where is the mantra about how crappy BB is at drafting?? The worsest ever.. The Pats now have 6 former 1st round draft picks from other teams.. Clayborne, Gilmore, Dorsett, Patterson, Shelton and Coleman..

I don't think he was thinking clearly.

Trading Hogan now would be beyond dumb
