Patriots Sign WR Corey Coleman

I think Gary Coleman is pretty slow these days.

You're saying he was fast at some point? He's the one guy Rich Eisen can beat in the 40.

I presume that Edelman is healthy enough to take the load of a #3 WR. In that case, we are fine with Edelman, Hogan and Dorsett. Patterson is good enough to be active a special teams player and a #4 WR. We don't need 4 WR's much. In any case, we have Gronk and the RB's as receivers.
==========
That leaves us with a need for backup WR, who will usually be inactive unless he is a good enough PR or STer to be active.

Coleman and Fowler are this week's tryouts. We certainly can keep both until Edelman is ready. However, when Edelman is back, we need one at most.

Ok, so

Edelman
Hogan
Dorsett
Patterson
Coleman
Fowler

Not that I'm granting either of the new additions an automatic berth, but this lends itself to question of what the final potential look would be:

6 to make 5, 6 to make 4, or keeping 6 because Patterson and Fowler can play STs?

I get that you think non-starting WRs are basically useless hood ornaments on this team, nowadays, and that's fine, though we disagree on that. But, with regards to my earlier post, what I'm wondering about is how the Patriots are viewing the best-scenario potential long term roster with regards to the two new additions. Are they looking at Coleman like Dorsett from last year, in the sense of not expecting much, but planning to keep him around to learn and develop, or is he just fodder from the get go? That sort of thing.

BTW when can the Pats resign Matthews/Britt? When those guys get healthy they are by far the best options out there for WR depth here.

He hasn’t produce in 4 years.

If you think there is a conspiracy against him perhaps you share a dealer

No sh*t, he hasn't played in 4 years. I never claimed otherwise. What a stupid straw man. Neither have I came close to suggesting a "conspiracy" against him. Your argument hinges on Tyrod Taylor not missing an open Gordon on Sunday.

All I've said is that he still looks good and how you're foolish for acting like his elite talent is suddenly gone, simply because you can recite his stat line 1 week into the season.

The reports on Matthews were he just wasn't a fit aside from the injury. I think with Britt it was a severe hammy injury.

Theoretically they can sign them whenever they want

I’m not big on the signing but what the hell, it’s not like they have anything to lose by it. Interestingly enough he played his best game against Jalen Ramsey, which makes me wonder if they will suit him up Sunday and just have him run Mathew Slater routes, just to give the Jags a deep threat to worry about. This is almost a last chance for Coleman so we will see if anything changes in his approach to pro football?

Barring injury I don't expect anything from #5 WR's. And we already have an emergency #4 in Patterson, who is #3 because of a suspension (instead of an injury).

So, if anyone else is on the roster when Jules comes back, I would expect him to be a STer or someone who is being kept on the roster for 2019.

I'm fine with carrying development players (players that we expect something from in 2019).

I don't expect to see Matthews back.

With regard to Britt, if he can recover, he might be a good player later this year, or for the playoffs.

Injury settlements are minimum 6 (8?) weeks, I believe, but depending on how the parties involved arrange the settlement contract, it may extend several more weeks before that same team can re-sign the player. Tough to say exactly when Britt would be eligible, but my gut is that he'll be eligible before he's fully healthy, and that they would probably take things slow to let him heal up 100% before rostering him.

Bryant IS dumpster diving.
He’s 29. If he was in his late 30s I’d agree, but the guy is a 3x Pro Bowler who still caught 6 TDs and over 800 yards last year.

He certainly worthy of a look over a guy like Fowler or Coleman. I don’t even think Fowler makes it to week 4.

Well obviously he isn't
Uh, yeah he still is.

The fact that he hasn’t has everything to do with his attitude, not his ability.

And considering this organization has brought in much worse malcontents, it’s very short sighted to immediately dismiss his possibility in the future should things not pan out with Coleman/Fowler.

He’ll be an RFA, so they basically have a $2 million option for 2019. It makes sense to wait and see if there’s a way to structure it to offset less of the Bills’ $2 million guaranteed, though.

How do you mean he'll be RFA? Only UDFAs can be RFAs. More importantly he already became FA when he was cut.

You saw one play.
He has not been anywhere near the player he was since he returned he wasnt last year either.
That guy you think he is was one season 4 years ago. Football players who don’t play football become worse at football.

Fowler will play special teams.
If Bryant was a normal human being without excessive baggage it might be worth bringing him in. But he is not smart enough to understand this offense and will be a total dlck in the locker room when he doesn’t get the ball.
And then we have to hire a babysitter so he doesn’t get in trouble off the field.

These two guys dont get guaranteed money, Dez probably wants guaranteed. If these two guys dont work out, no loss.

Usually, drafted players sign 4 year contracts, so they never get the chance to be a RFA which is the applicable status when a player’s contract expires after having 3 years of experience and is given a RFA tender by his team. In Coleman’s case, The Patriots would only need to offer an “original round “ tender to give them the right of refusal or a 1st round pick if they decide not to match the offer.

Essentially, if the Patriots want to retain him for the 2019 season, they can do so and at a pretty low cost.

I tend to think Dez would play for the veteran minimum if the Pats came calling and offered him a chance to play with Brady and a clear shot at a ring, but who knows.

If the guy wants to be here, and that’s evident from his Twitter, he should know he’s not getting anything guaranteed.
