Patriots Sign WR Brandon LaFell to 3-year contract

Didn't stand out to me but apparently, he had a little audition for BB last year. According to Reiss,

Had success against the Patriots: We've seen examples in the past where the Patriots have trouble defending a player, and in future years, that leads Bill Belichick to pursue that player. Wes Welker is the most notable example of that. While not at Welker's level, LaFell was excellent in the Panthers' 24-20 win over the Patriots on Nov. 18. He had a season-high seven catches and a touchdown.

Getting a feel for LaFell as a player: When it was first learned that the Patriots hosted LaFell on a free-agent visit this past Wednesday, I went back to watch the Nov. 18 Patriots-Panthers game to get a better feel for his style of play. He aligned in various spots in the game, and was often used in motion. He played on the outside in two-receiver sets, although the Panthers often had two receivers to the same side, and in those cases, LaFell would usually be aligned as the inside receiver. In the three-receiver set, he would mostly be in the slot as the Panthers seemed to want the speed of Steve Smith and Ted Ginn outside. LaFell showed good hands (e.g. tough sideline catch for a first down), precise route-running (e.g. 9-yard slant for a touchdown against Logan Ryan) and strength as a blocker (e.g. he leveled defensive end Andre Carter on one play). LaFell doesn't wow with speed and might be summed up best this way -- a solid-not-spectacular receiver with good size (6-2, 210) and versatility. He also boasts potential as a red zone target, and he's been durable in his four years in the NFL (just four games missed)

Big. Versatile. Durable. Red Zone target.... We sure coulda used some o' dat last year....

If you can't understand how this is taking things out of context and not a valid point, maybe you should go ahead and lurk for a bit. This would be like saying the Patriots let Talib go because they thought Dennard is better. No.

Yeah but I'm not, I was saying we paid a lot for the guy. If the guaranteed is low, then I'll be happy say I was wrong. But only if I get the credit

Durable is what I like!

I like durable too...but I also like production.
(Have a feeling the jest, and the broncos front office are having a good laugh right now, seeing what we paid...granted we don't know the guaranteed $ but damn! 3 for 11 is initially troubling.)

Patriots Sign LaFell (3 Years)

Scratches head...is Dobson hurt worse than we think?

We're not going to get any of the 3 kids on the practice squad. Cut, they'll get gobbled up in a heartbeat.

So Edelman, Amendola, Lafell, Dobson, ?

I don't know. The money's getting tight. I'd have felt a lot better if they had spent that money on Evan Dietrich-Smith instead. I just don't see this as a big upgrade for the $$$.

But then, I don't know much about Lafell.

Agreed. Sure, there's a spot on the roster for him, but this seems like a WR version of the Kyle Arrington deal. Even if he carves out a niche in which he's effective, he'll still be overpaid for that role.

It becomes a problem when you consider what else you could have done with that money. Still holding out hope that he can be cut at little cost before the season.

I think we will have better luck transitioning a rookie TE vs a rookie WR. I think the team's sample size drafting rookie receivers is too large to ignore at this point. While Dobson and Boyce MAY emerge what we pretty much KNOW at this point is that it will take minimum a few seasons. Its a lead pipe lock drafting a WR in this draft won't really help until maybe the 2nd or 3rd year if at all.

Lafell V. Sanders is the question, because that's who we have answered the outside issue with(depending on guaranteed money), and Denver signed ES just before.

I highly doubt a vet TE is signed at this point. I could be wrong though.

I don't think their WR draft history is large at all. I'd say it shows they don't value the position much. WRs are a big part of the roster taking 6 or more slots on most teams. Yet in 14 drafts the Patriots have taken zero 1st round WRs. Compare that to TE or other positions which typically have half as many spots. Only 6 WRs in 14 years in the top 3 rounds, I'll bet no other team in the NFL has invested so little in the position.

Dobson has a broken foot that hasn't heeled. Surgery to get screws last week. There are no guarantees that he'll recover completely, miss the start of the season, or be plagued by recurring foot problems.

I love how people are pencilling in this guy for #1, that guy for #2. How quickly we forget how many frickin' receivers it took to get thru the season last year. We were signing them off the street before games and sometimes still didn't have enough healthy receivers to go three wide.

From your lips to Belichick's ears.

As a fan, I wanted to see the receiving targets improved upon. It didn't need to be a huge splash signing, especially when we've done that on defense.

That said, I also didn't want to keep hearing how "our rookies looked good last year, and they should definitely have much better years in 2014." We have absolutely no idea whether or not that will be true, and even if it is, the likelihood of that happening to more than ONE guy isn't too good.

LaFell is just fine as an upgrade to one of those rookies right off the bat, and is exactly the kind of signing I assumed to see. I'm still looking out for another vet addition as well in the likes of Avant, Britt, etc.

It seems a bit pricier than expected at first glance (agree that we need to see the final numbers), but overall, I'm ok with it as long as the FO focuses the rest of their attention in FA and the draft on the lines, on both sides of the ball.

True, but humor me and look at those they have drafted.

I'll wait .............

Thanks for saying what I was trying to get across.

Need that interior lineman.

Yeah. We've seen this movie before.
The guy everybody else could contain, but the Pats couldn't...let's sign him.

Panthers fans are happy he is gone.

Which is concerning considering they have no other receivers on their roster.

This.

I wish we spent that money on defense. Plenty of offense in the draft.

We obviously weren't expecting Andre Johnson to step onto the field, were we?

LaFell was a 3rd round pick who has improved in every single season in both TDs and receptions. He's also had some nice YPC averages at 17, 15.4, etc.

We could've done a lot worse in my opinion.

I'm sure that Panther fans:

1) Are pretending to be happy after losing Steve Smith, and their WR2 as well

2) Almost have any idea as to what the hell they're talking about in terms of offensive production

Check this out, a little concerning.
Brandon LaFell Stats - ESPN

Now Cam Newton isn't known as the most accurate passer, but LaFell's stats show that he catches a lower-than-avg number of targets. They threw to him a lot and his catch% wasn't that great.

He seems like a big outside speedster who doesn't have great hands or route running.

Going by that he caught 55.6% of the passes thrown is way.

Calvin Johnson (and i'm not saying he is Calvin Johnson or even close) caught 53.8% of the passes thrown his way.

AJ Green 55.4%
Josh Gordon 54.7%

I hope they didn't give him 11 mil just for the competition.

This team makes no sense sometimes with the way they just overpay for other players but pinch pennies with their own.

Yes... Amendola included.
