I said back on page one I would reserve judgment until after camp and preseason when I saw the offensive line depth chart… but I thought we should take about today with the first day in full pads. So here we go…
First day in pads O-Line observations:
Line play was strong, on both sides of the ball. The offensive line was tested in one on ones, but that’s to be expected. The 1/1 drill favors defenders. The offensive line was burying defenders in the run game in team drills.
Strange (offseason award winner) singled out for a good day, he got beat once in ones by Milton… then came back to beat him handily, then made some notable blocks in team drills where it matters. Sow was said to have outright “tossed a defender” in one’s, then knocked defenders over in team drills. These are your two guards after Onwenu… I don’t think LG is as big an issue as advertised.
Campbell got worked by
Mike White in one’s but also gave as good as he got. That’s a tough one on one matchup. He then acquitted himself well in team drills.
The one question mark has been Moses slow start at RT, but I’m buoyed by reports of Demontrey Jacobs. I was near writing him off and annoyed because he clearly had talent… he just didn’t have the feet. If Doug Marrone can transform Jacobs into a workable tackle that would be amazing. The guy can play both sides, has good athleticism and is the widest guy we’ve had since Trent Brown.
Bradbury is the starter at center, but Jared Wilson is getting a crash course is backing up both center and guard. He needs to clean up the bobbled snaps with Maye, they both need to take the time to work on it… reports on his blocking have been stellar.
The defensive line also had wins and reporters had a hard time deciding who “won” the day. But in my estimation when you have great players on both sides of the ball, competition is high and it’s often hard to tell. Great players make plays, they also get beat by other great players. It’s camp, it’s practice… use practice to get better, but I like what I saw on day one of pads.
They have to run the ball well to be good on offense, it starts there.
