Aiyuk have three things going for him Work Ethic - Age - Production. He would help speed up Maye's development I'm buying.
Gotta spend the money on someone or some people I suppose or you're cheap but the line is the major issue. I'm guessing this is a 4 win team and the left tackle will come in the first round next yr. Hate to see 30 million per yr on a wr for 2-3 yrs

To people saying it's "too soon" to get the WR1 - why? You only get 4 years of a cheap rookie QB (and the fifth year will still be relatively cheap compared to top deals), so you may as well maximize it. Acquiring Aiyuk now and giving him a 5 year extension would lock him up for the next 6 total seasons, with him scheduled to hit free agency again the year after Maye would be needing his new contract, when he would be 32 and still have a few good years left. You could then extend him in his last year to create cap relief after you just used up a lot of your cap on Maye's deal.

I could see a 5 year/$150M deal which is $30M APY. That'd be the same APY as Tyreek Hill and Amon-ra St. Brown and just below Justin Jefferson and AJ Brown, but would be the biggest WR deal in NFL history based on the total dollar amount, so he'd still have that to brag about ("highest paid WR in history" etc.) His hits in the last years would be on the high side but the cap will probably be very high by then, and a $30M WR APY in 2029 might look somewhat pedestrian at that point. And like I said, the goal would be an extension/restructure in the last year to create cap relief anyway.

I think if they do this deal it's a sign that they fundamentally disagreed with Bill's methods of team building. I think that's really the key. They moved on from Mac and Bill, that's it. Resigned nearly everyone. It screams that they feel that Bill and Mac were the problem and they think they can compete with young guys.

I would say they agreed with quite a few of Bill’s moves given all the extensions there. Lets not forget its not only defenders that got extensions but rham, onwenu, henry and even though bourne is in the trade rumors he was resigned. So they are keeping the good and replacing the bad. Which makes total sense

It's interesting that Bill didn't see the value of how he approached 2007 in surrounding Tom with a much talent as possible during the 2nd dynasty. There were missed opportunities that came back to haunt them and many WR's that were passed up for players that Bill didn't need. We are very lucky they won 3 more after 2004.
Yeah it's weird. He was quick to ship Randy when Randy started yapping, but he did bring in AR and Gronk, and if that had worked out, they'd probably both be getting fitted with Gold and Red jackets. I think something soured him on it as he aged, and then that was solidified with the defense nearly pitching a shut out in the last SB.

We are dangerously teetering on the edge of the rabbit hole here, so let's bring it back to Aiyuk.

This is utterly stupid. This team is in the early stages of a rebuild. An "experienced" or "proven" player like Aikyuk is an older player, by definition. By the time this team is genuinely in contention for anything, he will be just plain old. If the management is unable to act in a responsible manner and forego snatching at this shiny object in order to appear "aggressive" or some such nonsense, they can at least form a determination not to abandon any draft pick in the process. If they want to waste cap space and money on this boondoggle, that's bad enough, but a rebuilding team needs to draft and develop, not pick up the sort of final piece which might be justifiable for a team far closer to contention than this team is. I have given this some thought to this before commenting. To my eye it is the stupidest idea I can recall ever getting traction with the Pats. Are we the new perennial cellar-dweller, determined at every opportunity to grasp at feel-good nonsense at the expense of doing the work of building a team? So it seems.

If they trade for Aiyuk, they'll still have all their picks besides the 2025 2nd based on what I've seen. And they'll still have tons of cap space. My guess is that they're looking at the idea of Maye stepping into play by the end of this year but mainly next year and what type of

Onwenu played RT last year but he's been back at RG in camp where his potential is greatest. And supposedly Sidy Sow is settling in nicely at LG where he played in college with Strange out. Seems like they may have a high end guard duo in place. With Andrews signed through next year as well, they probably view themselves as having a quality interior OL for the young QB.

At WR, supposedly Polk/Baker/Douglas are all showing out well. Osborn as well. But there seems to be an acknowledgement that they need a #1 at the top of the depth chart. Enter Aiyuk, Maybe he's not a top 5 WR, but he's good enough to headline a depth chart as he's done in SF recently. And with that in place, Polk/Baker/Douglas all slot in one spot lower and there seems to be optimism they could work as 2/3/4 on the depth chart.

At TE, Henry is solid even if not spectacular. He's been reliable here too. Just a steady Eddy type where you can confidently mark the position as filled.

At RB, they have Stevenson signed as a 1st and 2nd down guy who can catch some too. I think they like Gibson in the receiving back role, evidenced by him being a FA priority. So they probably view this position as in good hands as well.

At the end of the day, if they get Aiyuk, they probably feel really solid about the offense around the QB besides OT. That's probably going to sabotage the offense but I bet they're ok with that because they don't play on playing Maye a lot anyway and they could use another year of picking high. My guess is they view trading for Aiyuk as setting them up well to pass the reigns over to Maye next year. They'll enter the offseason with a high pick, lots of cap space still and the whole offense around the QB looking alright besides OT but resources to address it. And unlike this year, I think they'd be motivated to address it more thoroughly even if only on a stop gap basis because they'll be playing their actual franchise QB.

@Real fan 02, you asked this yesterday:

Are 9ners going to pay anyone? The QB, the LT and thier best offensive player all haven't been paid.

McCaffrey got his new contract this offseason. He is without question their best offensive player.

The CBA it doesn’t allow players with fewer than three years of service time sign extensions, so they can’t sign Purdy to a new contract until next off-season. Even if they could, why would they? They should absolutely enjoy the benefits of having an inexpensive quarterback for as long as they can, without alienating the QB.

Trent Williams will get paid at some point before the season starts.

Anytime the Pats are favorites to land a WR1, it doesnt happen. Im not getting my hopes up...

Thanks for the information that's much appreciated. Yes Mcaffrey is a great player snd has been for a few years. His problems have all been staying on the field. He also plays with other great players including great LT that paves lanes for him. If I'm a DC.. the guy I take away is Mcaffrey thier offense thrives off him. Take him away and make the QB beat you. So basically Purdy will see his pay day next offseason?

Steelers are back in the trade battle. The Patriots are just being used to drive up the cost of what the Steelers are offering. This is a waste of time.

Aiyuk is not a speedster. 4.50 40 time
He does not want to come here and won’t

I wouldn’t make the trade, I just think Aiyuk is a better player than Ridley.
Maybe a bit better but a high 2nd rounder is a steep price to pay for a #2 WR

No surprise there. That was the plan all along.

Just like with Dhop and Ridley. We are just being used.

They can get a 1 from Pitt as that pick shouldn’t be anywhere near top 5.
