The magic number is more like down to 1/2. A tie in any of the remaining games for the Patriots or Jets would give the #1 seed to the Patriots.

    Jets finish 0-2
    Chargers finish 2-0
    Colts finish 2-0
    Jaguars finish 2-0
    Chiefs finish 1-1

Is one way for the Jets to miss the playoffs. Would of been a lot simpler if Steelers won.

As disgusting as it was, rooting for the Jets was the smart thing. We hadn't played the Packers yet. If the Patriots had lost to the Bills and Packers, the Steelers could have swiped the #1 seed with a win over the Jets.

I think he possibly meant that its unbelievable that they are still in the running rather than asking how it is possible that they can qualify if that makes sense??

Re: Jets as a number one seed?

    Also,

What would happen if say the Pats and the Jets both finished 15-1 with a win and defeat against each other but then winning all other division and conference games??

would it come downt to an aggregate score between the 2 games i.e

    Pats 31
    jets 21

    then

    jets 24
    Pats 21.

Pats would win by virtue of more points in the head to head?

or am i missing soemthing obvious and being really stupid?

    This is correct.

Chances of the Jets winning their next 2 and the Pats losing their next 2 are slim.

Moreover, I'd rather face the Jets in the playoffs than San Diego.

I couldn't bring myself to root for the Jets, notwithstanding the implications. Once they won, though, it made last night much more comfortable. I would have been much more aggitated during that game if the Steelers had won.

For some reason I kept thinking Pittsburgh had won... wishful thinking.

Re: Jets as a number one seed?

It would actually go to strength of victory/strength of schedule before it gets to points, so whichever team had the harder schedule would get the #1 seed.

Re: Jets as a number one seed?

the playoff picture as it is right now is the best the pats can hope for.

    pats #1
    pit #2
    KC #3
    Colts #4
    Balt
    Jet

balt are more than likely going to win out plus they have h2h over jets
jets are more than likely going to clinch the 6th seed after beating pitt
colts are going to finish 4th

pats will get winner of kc/jet...this is a favorable match up then its one game to SB.
Balt,Colt,Pitt..who ever makes it outta there will probally be physically spent for the afcc in foxborro

Re: Jets as a number one seed?

In that scenario, the Pats wouldn't get the winner of Chiefs/Jets. They would get either the Jets if they win or the winner of Colts/Ravens. The #1 seed plays the lowest ranked team remaining after the wild card round.

Re: Jets as a number one seed?

    yea i worded it awk

but jets will likely beat the chiefs and remain the lowest seed in the playoffs
so then it is ravens/colts/pitt, 3/4 of the afc powerhouses. whoever makes it out will be physically depleted...given the colts and steelers injury issue, it will be great for the pats if either one makes it out

Re: Jets as a number one seed?

Actually it would never come down to that....

    Two Clubs

    1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs). -tied
    2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division. tied
    3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games. tied
    4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.tied
    5. Strength of victory. this would basically be the records of the two teams that you played based on last years standings
    6. Strength of schedule. If #5 is tied this one is as well
    7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed. This would be all teams you played in the conf
    8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed. same as #7 of all teams
    9. Best net points in common games.if both 7&8 are tied this one is as well
    10. Best net points in all games. if both 7&8 are tied this one is as well
    11. Best net touchdowns in all games. now we don't care about fg, PAT, safeties & 2 pt conversions
    12. Coin toss

I HOPE we get this sewn up in Buffalo so the injured can rest and the 2nd stringers can get some reps in so we have more depth in the Playoffs.

Re: Jets as a number one seed?

Sort of wish we had a 4:00 game so we could know the results of the Jets/Chicago game. Since a Jets loss wraps up the 1 seed, you'd sort of like to know before we play -- not that the Patriots would necessarily do anything major different, but on the margins the more information the better to make good decisions.

It's a Reynold's wrap IMO. Yes Buffalo is a talented team. Still & all The Pats are going to take care business on Sunday. There's no doubt in my mind.
