Patriots FA period assessment (so far)

I'd say the team has refrained from paying top rate dollar for less than top rate offensive talent.

It's year one of a multi-year rebuild. Take the best of what's out there and fill in the gaps later. No need to be like the bottom-feeding teams out there and pay gobs of money for flashy headlines and subpar on-field performance.

They've addressed each glaring hole but LT and WR within 8 days. Upgrades will be needed but they at least have the framework of what could be a competitive team soon.

Defense looks really good to me if Barmore comes back and they can add a rotational edge and DL in the mid rounds. Shouldn’t be too hard in this draft.

Offense will be okay if they can hit on LT and WR with the first 2 picks and draft HB depth later on. The WR and LT could be challenging in this draft, but it’s possible. Trade for WR is still an option.

Hasn’t been perfect, I'd probably have liked a backup plan by now at LT/WR and better upgrades at C and FS but very pleased with what they’ve done heading into the draft and they could add more still.

Please explain. What exactly does "burning cash" look like to you?
Jerod Mayo type burning cash! In particular, seems they have stayed out of signing topflight WRs, for example.

C+/B- for me so far

They invested heavy on D, while so far not really improving around Maye

There were no top flight receivers to spend on. Offered Godwin a good chunk more than TB did and he stayed in Tampa. Higgins was franchised. Who else are we talkin here???

I think they did improve the line as best as they could with what was out there, which I consider improving around Maye. They took some shots on some receivers but there wasn't a lot to be had. For me its a solid B. There was a much better pool of defensive players vs offensive to be had in this free agency.

I've been less active of late, but popping in here and there. Looks like we're not burning cash this FA period either.

No worries, during your absence the 'it's never enough' faction has been taking up the slack just fine.

Well, they didn't sign Justin Jefferson, Terry Mac or the twins in Cincy. Couldn't get Megatron out of retirement. Missed on Randy Moss and Jerry Rice. Abject failure.

Agreed. This year's FA Period had the best "Deals" on Defense. And, as we clearly had needs on D and Offensive FA's (whether it was a LT that could give us 2 to 3 years until we drafted a replacement and/or young WR's that would be significantly better than what we have now), either resigned with their teams (Stanley/Jackson), didn't want to come here (Metcalf), didn't want to leave where they were (Godwin), or were tagged and resigned (Higgins), the Patriots did the best that they could and added some valuable pieces to hopefully greatly improve the D. Morgan Moses is a definite improvement at RT (even if for the next 2 years). We need to add at least 3 players in the draft (although more would be better), that will become studs regardless of their positions.

Let's not give up on the 24 rookie class. Robinson, Wallace, Polk, baker, jaheim bell should be somewhat salvageable.

I think one of Polk and Baker will make it. Not holding out a lot of hope for Bell. The other two should be NFL players with proper coaching.

Did you have a topflight WR in mind that you wanted the Pats to sign?
