Patriots Cuts

1) one issue is whether we should rely on players after being here only 8 days.

2) OF COURSE, there may be more moves. That's the point. We need someone who knows the system to be a Game Day backup. My choice has been Croston.

You had no point. Your reply was garbage and had nothing to do with what was being said. Move along already.

Derek Rivers is a lost cause. Goes on IR again. He can’t return this year because he’s placed on IR before September 1st.

Ughh what is the third year in a row on the IR

My guess for guys who shouldn't be comfortable:
Melifonwu
Oszlewski
Wise
Burkhead

I’ve been calling the D. Thomas cut for awhile. I realize there is a lot of speculation he’ll be back. We’ll see what’s happens between now and then. But let’s remember he’s a free agent and a lot has changed since he signed pre-draft:

  • Thomas might not want the same contract as the original one he signed considering the heavy incentives become harder to hit with a lot of WRs capable of playing.
  • The Patriots might not want to pay Thomas much for the same reason. They have cheaper options with Harry, Dorsett, and Meyers.
  • Thomas has a different market value now that he showed capable of playing and Achilles appears to be not as risky/most healed. There may be other bidders.
  • While both sides may genuinely want this to work out, who knows what things will look like when Thomas looks at other potential options and what the Patriots will offer for a contract (if they’ll adjust it with more guaranteed money.)
So, in essence, I think he may end up gone for the same reason as before today. His market value is very different from April, his role and production levels are very different projections than they were in April, and the Patriots are no longer desperate for a WR.

It’s an odd/risky move to release a player like this and expect he’ll re-resign. They had a one-year deal with little guaranteed money on it. I don’t expect they’re extremely confident this is just a strategic maneuver.

No. Anyone can't return. Only players put on the IR AFTER the cut-down to 53 men can return.

Andrews, Froholdt, Gant, Davis, Rivers and Ross are done for the year.
It was a good ride guys, but I'm on to 2020.

No. But status is unknown. Also a depth position.

Which could be why the Pats are supposedly interested in McCoy. Of course, it could be that they put it out there to drive up the price.. I'd be happy with Michel, White, Harris and Bolden, honestly..

Taking a step back, there are NINE rookies on the 53 at present.

What's even more striking is that, by my count, there are TWENTY-ONE players who didn't play a single down in last year's regular season (though Collins and Bolden had previous Patriots experience).

That looks like a team in full-on rebuilding mould. But, in fact, they have just won a Super Bowl.

I think that's amazing. Only Bill Belichick!

So, once Thomas comes back, the only 'surprise' would be Hoyer, who could also return.

Adjusting for the OL shuffle, post-injury, BB went mostly chalk.

Assuming Thomas comes back.

yes, as he did during the draft

Keeping 2 UDFA WRs is at least eye opening right?

So my question is: why, of all the players, would you release DT for a roster shuffle like that? If it's really all predicated on an IR designation, wouldn't it be better to release someone who's gonna draw less interest/isn't as "proven"?

Was Hoyer being cut a surprise?
