You are aware cap space carries forward to next year? They did go after a high-priced WR and lost out.
This is a 3 year rebuild - just have to be patient. The roster was a mess, and that doesn't get fixed in one year.

Why would it have to be a 3year rebuild?
What makes you think they will spend it next year if they wouldn’t spend it this year?
Why wouldn’t you want to bring good players in at this stage to improve the team and make the rebuild process better? They will still be here in 3 years.
If there was one hole and they couldn’t fill it, that’s one thing, but this is a roster full of holes.

The issue is he's past his development years. Transitioning from G to LT out of nowhere at age 26 ain't happening. If it had been a project they engaged in from day 1, then maybe, but we'll never know.

This is a personal gripe for me but swing guys are backups by definition. If they played either side well they'd start. At best they suck tolerably on both sides.

It's why I want them to go all-in on making Wallace either a LT or RT.

Trent Williams can play either side well... is he a backup?

How well they can play determines if they're a starter... not which side.

The assumption is we will be picking in the top ten again next year, and we should be able to get one then (although apparently next year isn't a great one for tackles). Right now, top free agents have no interest in playing here - that might well change next year or the year after.
The appropriate and realistic target is getting to the playoffs next year, and spending more on free agents this year isn't going to make that more likely.

They have a crazy tough schedule, a rookie HC, and big questions about when they'll bring Maye in, if this OL will gel, will these receivers shine, are Mayo & staff up to the task. It's kind of a fascinating situation, and it feels more encouraging than the past 2 years. This GM has done his draft and most of his first off-season, now let's see what we got.

The appropriate and realistic target is getting to the playoffs next year, and spending more on free agents this year isn't going to make that more likely.

If the cap remains constant then 11% is about 30,000,000 a year.
So if you do the math to comply with that rule the patriots must spend CASH at about $50,000,000 less than the cap number for the next 3 years. 30x4 = 120 mill they can be under to hit 89% plus the 40 they are over this year = 160,000,000 less than the cap that they could signs over the next : years and be compliant.
They will not be forced to spend it.

Maybe, but he’s probably looking at it as a second chance. He chose to sign with KC as an UDFA and it didn’t work out. NE chose to put a claim on him, meaning they want him on their roster. He’s got a job in the NFL.

Agreed. All in all he has to be a pretty happy with his lot considering that he could be flipping burgers. I assume, that if he is a cheerful guy, that he got over the disappointment of missing out in KC. Might motivate him to prove himself.

I was surprised they didn’t address line more in the draft. I’m not sure if the way it unfolded caught them off guard, if they have higher hopes for Wallace than do many others, or if they found Polk too alluring and knew the multi year rebuild allowed them to prioritize the line next year.

I strongly suspect that they were surprised at the run on OTs early; there were 9 taken before they could pick at 34 so they traded down. [Seems like we are playing checkers instead of chess these days.] Once they traded down they found out that all the primo WRs were gone and probably wanted to trade down again and get a second level OT such as Patrick Paul but could not find a partner so they took Polk as a consolation prize (sorry Ja'Lynn, nothing personal). Whether that was the right move depends on what Adonai Mitchell does--I suspect he will burn it up for a season of two before flaming out.

Let me re-state 3 of your points. Do I have it right? I tend to agree.

1) Our Defense will be worse because we lost Belichick.
Compared to 2023, that is the big loss, not the loss of a few weeks of Judon. We will likely get a few weeks of Barmore. We gain Gonzo and Jones. But, yes, the loss of Barmore and Judon makes the Defense much worse in 2024 than if they had played. (There will always be injuries).

2) We should have spent more.
You consider it irrelevant that we will push $35M or so forward, because you don't think that we will do what we should in 2025 and spend to the limit and beyond (through contract structure).

3) We should have signed a top defensive player or two.
Sure, we all rail about LT, but the reality is that we have weaknesses in 2024 and beyond in the front seven. It simply doesn't compute. The best that we could get was Watts and Ximines? Really?

@Ring 6 , you have worked yourself into that most desired of places that so may of us wish we could find. You expect this team to be the worst possible version of itself such that any glimmer of hope, any infinitesimal accomplishment, is a cause for celebration. If the Patriots so much as take another NFL team into the 4th quarter with a lead, it will be an achievement beyond the likes of which you could not, at this moment, imagine. Your season is destined to be full of miraculous surprises and moments of unparalleled joy.

2024, for me, and so many of my fellow homers, (especially those of us who went to Carolina who have followed Drake Maye's progress from the time the rumors started that basketball player Luke Maye's little brother was going to come to Chapel Hill), is going to be filled with trepidation and horror at every tiny set back. Guys like me are praying the Cole Strange comes back soon and are examining the make and model of Sidy Sow's walking boot in search of a hint that he won't require amputation. We live in fear that our expectations will be smashed on the rocks of 2024 as we careen to the days of Rod Rust.

Unlike yours, the lives of guys like me who see eight or nine wins, are in for crushing disappointment and perpetuation of grim, insecure nights until the Patriots are mercifully eliminated from playoff contention and we return to the enormous pride and confidence that comes with the Bruins having the best regular season in hockey until the playoffs roll around and...

There is much truth behind the criticisms of the team as it currently stands. Any team with this much roster turnover that is depending on many young unproven players led by a new coaching staff is destined to be bad at this point. The season will either be another lost year or a stepping stone to the future. To me it all comes down to 2 questions. 1. Will the youngsters learn and improve as the season progresses? 2. Can the coaching staff game plan well enough to minimize the weaknesses of the roster to allow the players to perform to their potential?

I’ll expand a little.
1) The DT position is a nightmare. The front 7 is made up of role players who have succeeded through game plannning and coaching making the sum greater than the parts. Subtracting 2 of the 3 interior DL from a D whose most important stat was #1 in ypc destroys that dynamic. A game plan role player D that can’t stop the run is doomed. And the mastermind of it all is gone. When have you ever seen any other defense mix and match role players and game plan and be as good as ours has? No other coach i am aware of has been good in that. And we have no depth.

2) it’s not 35 it’s 50. Why would they do it next year if they wouldn’t this year? What’s going to change? And if spending to the cap was a franchise philosophy, they could have brought in half of the players now, the other half next year, had a better year to grow from and have those guys be year 2 in the system. The only reason I can fathom to not do it is not wanting to spend the money.

3) We should have signed all the players we could to improve the team. That’s the gold standard of putting together a team. There are numerous players on our team that had upgrades available well within our budget and we chose not to upgrade. Sundays are going to be painful. The run d looks like it will be a problem. We have no one to rush the passer. Who is the 3rd corner? I don’t think we have one with 500 downs of experience. Who is the 3rd safety? We typically use 3 safeties half the time.
On offense the OL could be abysmal, the QB is bad, and he is throwing to a WR unit that has 6 guys with a combined career total of 245 receptions.

It feels like we didn’t try.

I feel the same. Greatful for the “extra” they brought to my life .. sitting in Paris watching the Paraolympics on the tv. Kids with missing limbs swimming … A great day to be alive
