Player Signing Patriots are signing former Cardinals OLB Jesse Luketa to a 1-year contract

Luketa is the 63rd player on the Pats 90 man roster currently. With 11 draft picks, I would expect at least 16 FA / UDFA to be signed between now and May 1st.

Some of these people aren't happy unless they sign the top 4-5 free agents. If they signed Pierce, Jalen Phillips. Tyler Linderbaum and Hendrickson, people here would complain they didn't sign Rasheed Walker.
Hopefully this was not about my post. I am meh on this singing, and in the past will have said IBBWT.

It's is a meh signing. 100%. He's a body. He's got a slim chance to make the 53. I mean, bottom of the roster guys need to be signed. They can't all be stars.

Special teams DID seem to need overhauling

It’s fine, back of my mind it sounded more like a bit of frustration not an indictment.

But can he catch a pass? If so I know a few who will be happy to have him on the team

We are moving on from Austin and probably Mapu. That's a lot of ST reps.
What makes you think we'll move on from Mapu? Seemed to be a pretty good part of the STs IMO.

I think some fans don't think about the roster math.

They have 15 UFA/FA/ERFAs and most of them are bottom of the roster guys. They might bring back 1/2 of that. Maybe.

If they sign and draft players to fill those spots they still need ~20 or so players for the 90 man roster for camp. Of those 20 5 might make the active roster and the remaining 3/4 are cut or on PS.

Luketa is in that bucket.

I think a lot of fans in the offseason (for all teams in all sports) equate order of signing with priority or level of importance. Like if the first signing we make when free agency opens and our first move is some low level Tonga NT replacement people will flip tf out asking why that is our first priority. In reality, the team talks with probably dozens of agents about maybe one hundred different players at a time and they all have different timelines for signing. The order of signing often times has absolutely nothing to do with what the team is "prioritizing". It just simply means that particular player was ready to sign earlier than other targets at other positions.

I get signing bottom of the roster guys and ST players but this guy did not see the field last year. How was he in 2024 and what changed?

just a guy doing his job defines at least third of the roster

The question is how well the jag's on the roster perform

Under bb, they performed very well indeed

BB very often found value vets who were undervalued by the rest of the league. But at least they were very good to great athletes who were undervalued because they were late round draft picks by their prior team, or even UDFA players who the Patriots had their eye on four years prior during the draft.

This guy isn't much of an athlete, and at OLB the Patriots seem to be throwing a lot of sht at the wall and seeing what sticks. This seems to be a workout guy they're bringing in to take a look at and who won't last. I could be wrong, been wrong before... we'll see.
