I'm not Belichick but I doubt Collins' roster spot will be contingent upon on his ability to cover man-to-man.

Similar to the Chung situation, I suspect Belichick will attempt to utilize Collins in a way that's more conducive to his skill-set. I expect a lot of pass-rushing, blitzing, and utilization as a robber/roamer in the short-middle of the field, along with sideline-to-sideline pursuit, sort of as a ball-hawking safety would.

I doubt he will be expected to cover man-to-man particularly often, or particularly well.

I’ve dusted off my crystal ball and this is what I see as of today:

    QB (3) Brady, Hoyer, Stidham

RB (5) Michel, White, Harris,Bolden, Develin
Rex Burkhead goes on the post 53 IR as his concussion issues make it difficult for him to make it through 16 games, so he’s On IR to protect him for after Halloween football.

    TE (3) Rudolph, Watson, Lacosse
The Patriots trade for Rudolph who gets a contract extension after the trade. They try to sneak Ryan Izzo to the PS but it sucks that half of last year’s Patriot assistants now coach in Miami.

WR (5) Edelman, Gordon, Harry, Myers, R. Davis
Matt Slater gets the same treatment as R. Burkhead. D. Thomas starts season on PUP and will be able to come off it about the time Gordon shucks his caretaker again. Gordon and Martavis Bryant get time served from The Commissioner and start the season in hopes they can salvage their lives and not just their football careers. Yes, 3 rookies, but I’ve found them all very impressive in the video I’ve watched. All have fantastic short area quickness and I’ll keep them over Phil Dorsett who I also really like as a 4th receiver type.

OL (8) Wynn, Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Cannon, Schwenke, Cajuste, Froholdt
Only 7 dress on game day. Thuney and Froholdt gets reps at T in practice. Veldheer’s retirement hurts because he was better than the rookies and journeymen already on the 90 man roster. I’m not sure any of the other available tackles are so you might as well develop the St. Louis, Skippers and Crostons of the world rather than sign Ulrick John or Matt Tobin.

DL (9) Bennett, Guy, Pennel, Wise, Butler, Shelton, Winovich, Simon, K. Davis
Keionta Davis is now the proud possessor of the incriminating photos Jake Bequette once had.

LB (6) Hightower, Van Noy, Bentley, Collins, Roberts, King

CB (6) Gilmore, Jackson, Williams. J. McCourty, Dawson, Crossen
Jones is traded to Detroit at the final cutdown. Crossen is the best gunner the Pats have drafted since Slater, so he makes the 53.

S (5) D. McCourty, Chung, Harmon, Brooks, Ebner

    ST (3) Gostkowski, Bailey, Cardona

Agreed, although one could argue that the quicker athleticism is what would set him apart from someone like Roberts, so that was more of my point. You’re right to point out that it may not be exclusive to coverage ability, alone.

Looking at dead cap I think this makes sense. Ideally, we don't carry that many RBs but Bolden and Burkhead's dead cap are pretty high, so unless a pre-season trade happens, they will both make the team. Same with Duke Dawson, since I prefer Crossen making the team as an extra ST guy but Dawson's dead cap is significant enough that I don't think it happens. Ted Karras becomes a cap casualty which is unfortunate.

Good job Cap. Only things I see a little different would be Hoyer and another DL {Rivers)over 9th OL(Croston)and Burkhead or Bolden.

I think we can get a comparable OL on practice squad. Izzo could push one of TE’s you mention. If Cowart flashes in camp he won’t clear wavers. DT’s are too valuable. In that case, I keep him over Ebner. I know. I’ll get a 4 week suspension for suggesting we cut Nate.

Thanks, but remember this is the What Would Bill Do version in which he keeps almost All of his pets & STs "aces." My WWID version posted earlier keeps almost None of them.

So do I, but Bill seems to like Croston for some undeserved reason; and that's why in this version he stays but in my version he goes.
Regarding Hoyer: if this were a 54-man roster then he would stay, but even in Bill's version he has to go in order to make room for all of his pets & STs "aces." In a perfect TC, Stidham proves worthy of #133 overall and Hoyer trades his helmet for a whistle.

He could indeed, and in my version both he & Mister Anderson make the 53 at the expense of the less-than-useless LaCost.

I can see 5 DTs being kept...and as I've stated in other posts & in other threads, I don't understand why Ebner's spot on the 53 should be considered out of reach...It's been 7 years now; shouldn't our ostensible backup SS have at least a modicum of ability to actually play the position?

I can not recall that Pats ever just placing someone on IR because they feared he might get injured. That is not how this team operates. If he is healthy he will play. If he is injured, he will not.

Also, he is an important player as shown by the confidence the team had in him during the last playoff run.

And, even if they were concerned about his health an wanted to "stash" him for later then they could just leave him on the active PUP and then reserve PUP him after the 53. Why use a valuable IR return spot for a player you knew was not going to play anyway until week 9? With PUP you get him back in week 7.

The only disadvantage of PUP VS IR Post 53 is that Rex would miss about a month and a half of training camp. I think he knows the system well enough where that does not matter and the extra IR return spot is more valuable than that.

I hope Ebner becomes expendable, we use that cap space.

I will search my soul. Something is seriously wrong. I agree with your entire 53 man roster.

Obviously, lots can happen between now and the 2nd game, when we tend to lock down our roster. Clearly, there are still more transactions even after that date.

    Here is Lazars first projection:

Lazar's 53-Man Roster Projection 1.0: Patriots Have Challenging Cuts Ahead of Them | CLNS Media

Go see the whole article for some insight but a few things of note:
    • 3 QBs:
    • 4 WR and Harris over Inman:
    • Bailey over Allen as punter
    • He has Gordon and DT starting suspended/PUP

Understandable, because that's the What Would Bill Do version. The What Would I Do version is, shall we say, just a little different:

Very disappointed that Bill structured Bolden's contract in such a manner that releasing him would cause a high dead cap #. Whom exactly was Bill attempting to out-bid for Bolden's "services" that he thought he had to do it this way?

I have a hard time imagining a roster where Hoyer doesn’t remain as the backup. It’s something that people will debate all summer long, but I never really saw much of an argument. I think Bill was prepared to keep 3 QBs the whole time.

As much as I agree, we still cannot assess the progress of Danny Ettling. I know he looked bad in last years preseason, but with a year under his belt there are a lot of unknowns..

Backup QB's are difficult to assess even in TC, as they often seem to not get the opportunity to play with starting receivers as much as #12.. difficult to change that, but a reality. Guess film study of practice can tell BB & crew more..

Solid point, although I don’t see them getting rid of Stidham either, of course. After all, he is a recent mid-round draft pick, and they’d never be able to sneak him onto the PS.

Etling seems to be a different story, and I don’t think they’d have much trouble getting him through to the PS after keeping Brady, Hoyer, and Stidham.

If they want to continue working with Etling this seems like the most likely scenario. That being said I would argue that whatever development and growth he has been through in the past year didn't put him onto any "exciting future track" otherwise we would have not drafted Stidham this year.

Like I said before I would not be surprised if he is not on the roster either before camp or a week into camp. It would benefit his development if there are other teams where he would have a shot at QB3 reps. Because here he will get maybe a series a day which really won't do much for him.

Over the years we've seen multiple teams pick up our backups. I would not be surprised if HOU, TN or DET

STs from 2014-2017. Dependable. Until mid season ST changes, 2018 was scary. I can live with an extra 4th down punt or two if it means we cover... I hope Ebner sticks.
