Patricia: Return of the Rocket Scientist

Man, we need Mayo to be named defensive coordinator, his defenses are super aggressive and we need that in today’s nfl.

I won't mind if he comes back in a role like this. I was never the biggest Patricia fan. I always felt his defenses were not aggressive enough for today's NFL, but in other roles he might be more effective.
He was an overrated DC....don’t want him back in this role....but I’m sure that’s what BB will do

Why is everyone here happy with this?

The era he was here was probably the worst defensive era for the Patriots under the Belichick era.
I don’t think most people realize that....Patricia was not good as DC overall....I would rather give Mayo a shot

How to you come back to the Pats with any credibility as Patricia now?

"Hi guys. Good to see some familiar faces. Now I know for the last few years you've been playing a new style of defence where you try to "stop" the other team from advancing the ball, and "force punts" etc. [*physical air quotes used]

But I'm a rocket scientist. So, we're going back to our old scheme of conceding the first 80 yards of the field and then doing our damndest to hold them to field goals in the red zone. Everybody good with that?"
That’s it in a nutshell....maddening to watch...

Patricia coming back shouldn't be any worse than when Josh came back having led the league's worst offense (12pts/game) in St Louis 2011, and after being fired from Denver going 5-17 before being fired in 2010. Patricia sounds like he's a good teacher, just have to put him in spots that he's good at.
Actually you’re right....he and Josh are both average at best in what they do...and way overrated

Sounds like he’s there more to evaluate talent.
If he brings Stafford or Golladay to New England or old buddy Trey Flowers I’m all
For it. Matter of Fact eff it let’s get Harmon and Jamie Collins back Too.
Hopefully Dan Campbell starts jettisoning players we can pick.
They may have loved him but the next year when Flores was calling the defensive plays the players kept saying they weren’t thinking as much just playing because it wasn’t as complicated.
Flores was a much better DC than Patricia and starting out well as HC in Miami overall.....

Interesting that Reiss and Zolak were talking about offense last week and now Rapoport mentions scouting. Sounds like he’s trying to become more well-rounded for another head coaching opportunity.
Trust me he had his opportunity and failed miserably....odds are against him that he will ever get another shot...BB would be only one to hire him for anything football related right now

He was an overrated DC....don’t want him back in this role....but I’m sure that’s what BB will do

I never got that no matter how bad the defense played under Patricia, it was always McDaniels fault. Any time the defense was giving up a huge amount of points and or yards, it was always McDaniels fault that he gave the ball back to the opposing offense too quickly and the defense didn't have enough time to rest. The Pats would lose a game 35-31 and more people would be complaining about McDaniels than Patricia.

Can't forgive that SB defensive performance and he only showed he's nothing special at the Lions. Not overly chuffed about him returning.
Um, it's BB you can thank for that performance, not Matt Patricia. I'm okay with the rehire. But man, we need playas.

Patricia wasn't as good as Flores but he was way better than Dean Pees. Pees had a crazy DBs 10 yards off the line of scrimmage defense, we could never stop a key 3rd down. With Patricia we at least drafted and developed a bunch of Patriot HOF players, won Superbowls in 2014 and 2016, and almost won 2017 if Malcolm Butler played. So I'm neutral on Patricia. We definitely need more rocket scientist IQ brainpower to counter balance the d3 sub-IQs from John Caroll roommates McDaniels and Ziegler.

Bill is a great coach. I feel like I have to preface my comment with the obvious given that some people seem to think he's prefect and should never be criticized. But this is one of his flaws. He tends to hire and promote guys he is comfortable with rather than just trying to find the best guy for the job. Is there a better guy out there? I don't know. I don't follow the coaching situation that closely. But I am fmiliar with his work here. This is a pretty underwhelming signing.

I'd rather take a different look at this.

Bill values football people with football experience, even failed ones. He's not gonna be the cool guy to hire a kid fresh out of school with new ideas, outside the box, mindset, all those fancy words etc

Patricia now has more football experience than before, he took a punch in the face and now he has to deal with that ugly side of coaching swimming all the way back to a position of respect.

He always seemed like a good professional in a way Belichick appreciates. I don't wanna see him as a DC anymore but it's good to have a seasoned football guy around, who knows the culture in this building, we lost too many in recent years.
