I have a few 3M respirators that I'm wearing for the weekly trip to the grocery store. I have the 6001 filters (vapor) for pesticide spraying, not sure if they help much, but at least I look ridiculous.

This was just posted in the other thread:

Still doesn't solve the issue of how scarce they are. We have a few filters, but those won't last long.

It really only makes the problem worse.

We have a limited supply of these masks, don’t we?

sigh

We are discussing a CDC advisory that may be issued effective 10 days from now. OBVIOUSLY, such a policy won't be effective if masks aren't available.

Limited supply of PPE-rated masks. Other masks, like surgical masks - or even a bandana or scarf or whatever - might help and certainly won't hurt.

Soap is more important right now than all the missing disinfectants like hydrogen peroxide and alcohol. Soap and water work perfectly on covid because of its sticky structure, and there's no run on bar soap. There's a thousand kinds available online and no price gouging as with tp, and disinfectants.

I wear no mask (have none) but I do think it offers some protection in the same way of locking a door with a cheap lock does. It makes it harder for the thief or virus to enter. Even a bandana might protect you a little if you happen to walk into some thick indoor air containing a few droplets--better to get one at your eyes and 14 on your mask than take in all 15.
I have a home made mask that my mother sewed for me. It's not great since it is cotton not fiber mesh, and once cotton gets wet it can and does hold germs. Yet as you say it prevents me from transmitting germs very far if at all, and shows I'm treating this seriously as I can. As soon as I get home it gets washed with soap and very hot water and hung to dry.

Well USPS currently has 2k in quarantine from an article the other day for symptoms..god knows how many have it...otherwise they are told to keep working and some offices have even threatened to fire those that don't show.

Just go look at /usps on reddit. It's unreal. This is a huge carrier of the virus IMO
Yep, mail has to be considered to be "dirty", just like anything entering the house.

Get a table/counter, make half the dirty zone, the other half the clean zone.

Put on gloves before getting the mail, put it into the dirty zone.

Keep all junk mail in the dirty zone, it's gonna get tossed.

Use a letter opener to open each envelope, let the inside stuff fall in to the clean zone, put envelope back in the dirty zone.

Discard all dirty zone contents, wipe down letter opener and dirty zone with disinfecting agent, discard gloves.

Spread doesn't discriminate by age, symptoms do. I suspect it's more to make sure seniors have the ability to get necessities than as a prevention mechanism. (The Whole Foods here doing a senior hour do it the first hour the store opens.)

Our senior hours are an additional hour before the store opens.

OK, I've thought about what you said. Younger and older folks have a similar likelihood to carry the virus.

So, my options are to go at 7, with older folks who are more likely to show symptoms if they have the virus. Or, I can go at 9 with younger folks who are less likely to show symptoms if they have the virus.

Isn't there more danger to me and my wife to be among the seniors who are more likely to be showing symptoms?

Not wearing one ...
Went to home depot today to pick up paint displays for my new condo.
I just avoided people, held my breathe and did not touch my face.
I carry Seventh Generation disinfecting wipes in car so cleaned my
hands, my arms ... and this is an important one people may not realize.

Wipe your door handle to enter car or hatch, steering wheel, shift,
Your remote for car and/or garage on your keychain ... some things people forget.
Lastly your phone also after going into any public place ... wipe it sown.

I spray my keys with alcohol when I get home also
wipe compute mouse down and keyboard.

I ain't wearing no stupid mask. If I am gonna wear one I'm wearing a gas mask.

Damn sure ain't gonna be forced to wear one either

No, but I can't say I blame or question those who do.

yes if the symptons include coughing and sneezing

All the healthcare workers I know say it only makes sense to wear it if you think you have or might be carrying the virus. Not sure it accomplishes much on the other end.

Plus there's the shortage going on so we really shouldn't be taking them away from surgeons.
I work at a hospital and they told us the other day that a mask can potentially help the spread of the virus. They only want people working directly with patients to wear them.

Nope, 99% sure I caught/had it about a month ago and stopped having symptoms a couple of weeks ago. Both my wife and I. So if I had it like I suspect I did now, thought it was a cold at the time. I am certain I already did my fair share of unwittingly spreading it already, sadly.

The wife and I wear gloves, wash our hands, and don't touch our eyes, nose, or mouth
without thoroughly washing our hands.

Whilst traveling to/from/in Asia a few weeks ago (which feels like years ago) I wore a mask on planes and airports just to prevent myself from touching my face with my dirty dirty fingers.
