OT: The Carolina Panthers have fired Ron Rivera

Rivera needs a good offensive coordinator. Kind of like how Sean Payton needs a good defensive coordinator.

.

wow odd year and even odder timing...what do you gain by firing him now? They lost Cam (impact somewhat debatable) got stellar play out of a rookie for a month, then he started playing like a rookie.

I am not sure what he could have done there, especially playing one of the best divisions in football and a fairly competent AFC division in the NFC West and AFC South along with the Packers.

Not saying a coaching change in the offseason wouldn't make sense, just firing him in December doesn't.

Historically speaking, the NFCS has the worst winning % of all time. As for this season, the NFCE is last at 16-32 (YEOW!) and the NFCS is tied with the AFCN at 23-25 in 5th place, just ahead of the 7th place AFCW at 22-26.

The strange thing is how awful the NFCW is all time, in spite of having the 49ers in the division. They're 6th of 8 in overall winning %.

You fire now to start interviewing.

If Riveria is not the future, why wait for black monday where you're competing with the pack of franchises in the HC hunt.

Damn straight. Let the tampering begin!

We have a roster spot - can he kick the football?

Interviewing OUT OF WORK HCs. Like Rex Ryan or Jeff Fisher.

Or, College coaches. Get it?

you can do that while the lame duck coach finishes out the season.

Uh huh, yeah right OFC ;)

And, like, the complicated process of picking up the phone and inquiring with NFL teams about interviews with current defensive and offensive coordinators.

Carolina is thinking out of the box. Changing the paradigm. Reinventing the wheel. Early bird catching the worm.

Rumors dont cut it.

There is no question that the job is open now.

I think they did him dirty after 9 years some Division Championships and even a SB appearance. The product wasnt so bad to be letting him go during the season, even with Newton out they have been holding their own. I get it hes old school but I think alot of soft teams could benefit from Riverboat going forward. Hes no Belicheck but his teams are prepared and competitive.

its not a rumor if the owner calls a candidate and says the Riverboat is being docked at the end of the season... just sayin'

Don't rightly matter... Mr Tepper can do whatever he wants with his shiny new toy

So, the new HC would interview while the present HC is still on the job. That's exactly what would happen to the new guy if he doesn't pan out. Bush league operation

Watch the Steelers, Eagles, Giants and other highly respected franchises the way they conduct coaching vacancies.

I think there’s better coaches out there. But he is exactly what Cleveland needs from a maturity standpoint.

yeah, they usually all wait til the end of the season to fire a coach.

Just because you still have a head coach does not mean you cannot start the process of vetting potential hires before he's gone. You really think that you are going to get a jump on other teams who have identified that they need a new coach? Even though the Giants are keeping Pat Shurmur for the blalance of 2019, you think the front office / Gettleman is just idle, waiting until he's gone to start the process?

Come on man

What serious candidate is going to interview for a job not available that he may not get?

Professional teams conduct business professionally. Thats why a good HC wants to go work at those franchises because he would receive the same fair treatment if things didnt pan out. Panthers fired Rivera so he gets all his contract money. Panthers owe him nothing else.

Furthermore, you fire now and gauge interest in available coaches and ask them to think about a staff instead of waiting until there are 3 or 4 jobs open that will drain all the best talent looking for a new opportunity.

Coaches interview for jobs they might or know they won't get all the time.

It's not just an interview. The team/GM/FO etc could have you answer 100 questions, break down film of opposing/would be new players or others things you might not be 100% prepared for w/out going through the process. Everyone doesn't have people skills or can light up a room.

It's something you can get better at. Again it's one of those things you have go through, experience it, to really appreciate what's happening.

1. You are the one who brought up Rex Ryan and Jeff Fisher

2. You don't honestly think teams that have decided to go with a new coach haven't already started the process?

3. Guys who are in a position to get one of the available hc gigs have already started back channeling for potential assistants.

Guys on the move already know this. Teams looking for new coaches have already contacted potential hires. Even as we go back and fourth ... the Panthers and Redskins aren't the only teams doing their due diligence right now. I don't get how you can't understand this

You think Bob Kraft waited until he fired Pete Carrol before starting his search?

I am not talking about getting your foot in the door. Serious actual people that are ready to move up and that are qualified for the job.

Have any examples of NFL teams inquiring about interviewing current DCs and OCs about their HC position that is still occupied by their current HC?
