OT: Official 2021 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

Absolutely zero sympathy for a team blowing a 3-1 lead, and losing 2 of those last 3 at home. Maybe the best shooter in the history of the league should be able to get off a quality shot one on one against Kevin Love in the final minute of game 7.

You don’t need to give them sympathy to realize LeBron’s ridiculous claim to being GOAT is moronic. The Cavs were not the plucky underdogs who were outrageously overmatched. If both teams played to the talent level of their individual parts, the series should have been close. Add in the Warriors stalling out and there you have it.

When LeBron was actually in the scenario he claims he was in - taking on an invincible team with almost zero support - the Cavs were 1-8 over the next two Finals.

I’ll stop there to avoid continuous repetition and not to wreck this thread.

Getting booted from the game was one thing. Getting the suspension was another. They issued a retroactive technical foul in order to do it. The league put its finger on the scale.

This is true you’re right.

Still the whole thing was pretty funny imo. The year before Lebron was a one man show against the Warriors and one two games so oh well.

It was a very pathetic interview. The guy has the skin of an onion. He will never catch Jordan. He knows it so he has to play up one Finals win when that same team has beaten him 3 other times.

Same team that was gonna be eliminated the round before. Actually not even the same team the team the cavs beat didn’t have Bogot, curry wasn’t playing hurt, iguduala was hurt, and lebron begged the league to suspended green for a game. D

Ok I’m annoyed over something. Some of the predictions for next season are coming out in the Athalon Sports and Lindsay Sports magazines etc. And obviously there are a bunch online. And almost every single one of them are not only predicting the Chiefs to make it back to the Super Bowl but in most cases winning it.

Now, if history is any indication there is one thing more difficult in the NFL than repeating as champions. That one thing is winning the super bowl the year after losing it. It’s been done exactly twice and only once in nearly 50 years. And that one time involved the GOAT at QB and coach. And that was a near run thing after a really up and down season.

So tell me where the hell is this confidence that the Chiefs are just gonna moonwalk into the Super Bowl again? On paper they aren’t any better roster rise than they were last season. Where did they upgrade? Meanwhile on paper compared to last year the Bills are better, the Browns are better, the Titans are better, hell the Pats are better you never know what might happen there.

I guess Mahomes Magic is powerful enough to single handily fight against the tide of history? I mean maybe it will, it’s a fallacy to just assume that past history of other teams applies here. But we have quite a large sample size of what happens to teams that lose the super bowl and it’s not good.

Their Superbowl performance was totally excused by the O line injuries. They picked up a couple people and that cinches it for Mahomes worshipers.

That's where that confidence comes from.

Chiefs get the benefit of the doubt I guess… kind of like what we got when Brady was here. I have heard quite a few predictions that it will be the Browns in the SB this year though. Might have been last year if the ref called the helmet to helmet hit at the Chiefs goal line in the divisional game. I don’t know if the Bills defense matches up that great with the Chiefs. Hill and Kelce went off for almost 300 combined in the AFCCG. Pats - so many question marks and pretty much all of them have to be answered positively for that to happen. Chargers might be interesting. Division rival to the chiefs and a team on the rise. Ravens might be in the picture.

Also wasn’t that long ago when a certain team lost the Super Bowl and then won it the year after.

It’s KC’s defense that makes them vulnerable.

That unit was lucky last year as they were healthy and finished way above expectations in points allowed, which was due to having a great offense and being able to get away with a bend don’t break.

It’s not that complicated. They have Mathieu, Jones, a solid but massively overpaid pass rusher in Clark, and a decent but overpaid linebacker in Hitchens (might get cut.). Then anywhere between a bit above average and barely acceptable guys on that defensive unit.

They restructured the Mahomes contract a year after designing it to free up ~$18M. They have still paid almost nothing for his services and continue to defer the bill. They brought in Brown and Thuney, who on paper are an upgrade over a healthy Fisher and Schwartz, but not by that much. Schwartz was an all-pro when healthy and Fisher is solid...probabky Solder/Light level below pro bowl but very reliable.

All in all, more mortgaging of the future, more superstar focus…no upgrades on a defense that badly needed upgrades.

They could come out of the AFC…with that offense, you can’t say they’re not contenders…but I think they’re going to struggle to be an elite team this year, despite wringing out another Mahomes rookie deal setup.

Do not have to stop them to beat them. Pats have outscored them twice for wins. At some point all that money tied up in Mahomes is going to come crashing down, and then we can hear him whine about no support like Rodgers does.

  • Mahomes is 38-8 in the regular season, including 14-1 last year.
  • Mahomes is 6-2 in the playoffs, and his only playoff losses are to Brady.
  • Mahomes has only been held under 10 points once in his NFL career, and that was in last year's Super Bowl.

So, to repeat:

Make a list of all the teams that can stop Mahomes-Hill-Kelce.

How did Mahomes feel when Brady said, "keep in touch."?

His nightmare asked him to keep in touch. Haha

I don't have an issue with KC being favored. I think Tampa is much better overall team with the Goat Qb obviously but KC coming out of the AFC is a fair prediction. If not for Brady in 2018 they would have been to 3 straight SBs.

The issue for KC is they did not get better defensively and that will hurt them specifically in the AFC with all the high powered offenses. Also the SB loser hangover is real especially when you get curb stopped the way they did by the Goat. That leaves a mark mentally.

The other issue is Reid. He just isn't a great big game coach and that really cost them in both SBs. They should have lost to the Niners if not for Jimmy choking. You just can't fully quantify Andy Reid doing Andy Reid things.

I get that, but I also get that over the last two decades, I have seen these teams jump up and...oh this is going to be the next dynasty talk. It never happens. They are a cant miss they are going to be great forever. Not with a cap they wont be. Only one team with a perfect storm was able to do that, and KC is not off to a great start with the cap or learning that You have to actually have a defense too. There have been a lot of high flying offenses, and then the league catches up with you, and they learn what they have to do with you. I could have made this same argument with the Rams in 2000, who is ever going to stop them? How long did it last? Injuries, inner turmoil, cap, loss of players, etc etc.

Still amazed at this. This was from week 4 last year, look at the score and time remaining and we know the Pats left points on the field up to this point. If the Chiefs struggled like this against a weak team with no NFL QB on the active roster and no practice at all - could have been foreshadowing for their Super Bowl collapse.

Yeah even a slight good Qb performance would have kept that game close, not to mention how Mahomes threw an obvious pick and then the refs claimed his momentum had been stopped so it didnt count which I have never seen from a QB throw in my life and will never see that called again. Teams study what works that other teams do. Atlanta who has an awful defense held KC under 20 last year and if not for a dropped int in the endzone win the game.
