OT: NFL issues slap on the wrist for Giants (200K in fines and lowers 4th round draft pick )

No it isn't. You can say it but that don't make it true.

It wasn't a backroom, illegal agreement. The owners knew they were going to put this in the new CBA, the players knew they were going to put this in the new CBA, the 2 sides negotiated the issue, the owners made a concession to put it in the new CBA, and David Doty ruled the whole thing was legal.

That's one of the huge benefits of sports CBAs: To take things like collusion and market limitations, which are typically illegal, and make them perfectly legal because they are collectively bargained on and agreed to by the owners and players.
Much like most of the moves by the NFLPA this was stupid. They signed away their right to pursue legal action, but it doesn't change that without a binding CBA it was illegal.

Judge Rejects NFLPA's Collusion Lawsuit Against The NFL Alleging Secret Salary Cap - SportsBusiness Daily | SportsBusiness Journal | SportsBusiness Daily Global

However, as part of the settlement of the lockout, the NFLPA agreed to dismiss all “unknown claims.” The union contended it had been duped into the concession and it should be allowed to sue. “This is precisely the danger in releasing 'unknown' claims -- a danger the NFLPA recognized and decided was worth the risk in order to settle,” Judge Michael Davis wrote in a 28-page decision.

While you can write up a document that absolves you of the ramifications of prior actions it doesn't make them legal at the time. This is literally the same tomfoolery that the league used to punish the Patriots.

They lowered the 4th round draft pick (Max 12 spots)?????

I have never heard of such a thing.
Where did they come up with this one? Why have a (Max 12 spots)???

What a total joke !!!!!

i wish someone goes back and look at older game videos/tv feeds and see if the walkie talkies were used by giants. they cant have it suddenly ready only for this game.

Do Not Forget
The last CBA gave the New York Jets an escape clause on their salary cap dilemma via specific language that applied to them.
This league EXPLICITLY favors New York teams.
The facts support this assertion.

This is why when BB and Brady are done, I am done with the NYFL.

(b) Proration from Preexisting Contracts. For Preexisting Contracts, any
proration under the Salary Cap rules under the Prior Agreement (including amounts
treated as signing bonus) to any League Year covered by this Agreement shall continue
to be charged to Team Salary for those League Years, provided that (i) no signing bonus
proration to the League Years of this Agreement shall apply for any Preexisting Contract
that was terminated, traded, or assigned via waivers prior to March 11, 2011, and (ii) any
Preexisting Player Contract entered into in the 2010 League Year shall have maximum
proration of six years (including the 2010 League Year). Notwithstanding the foregoing,
any Preexisting Contract that was traded or assigned via waivers and then renegotiated or
extended prior to March 11, 2011 to include any signing bonus or amount treated as
signing bonus shall have such bonus prorated as if the renegotiation or extension were a
new Player Contract, unless such second Player Contract was terminated, traded or as-
signed via waivers prior to March 11, 2011.

Page 56. That clause saved the Jets more that 5 million if memory serves. Despite the long-winded wording I think it affected less than 5 teams with the Jets benefiting 3x as much as the next team.

There is a concept in computer science called arbitrary-precision arithmetic. It basically says a calculation is made based on the available memory of the system making the actual calculation.

Love it when you guys talk dirty!

Wouldn't it be great if punishments were left to a published, peer reviewed algorithm applied equally across the 32?

I'm in the camp of some on this board who believe that the NFL* should stay out of off-field issues altogether and leave those to the criminal justice apparatus.

But to me, using unauthorized communication devices in real time DURING A F*CKING GAME is a "high football crime, the very essence of cheating". This is not an equipment violation. This is not a magical "general awareness of ..." situation. This is blatant cheating, communicating with your QB throughout an entire play. "Blitz on your ten o'clock", "OBJ deep on your 2". Give me a break! These guys SHOULD HAVE BEEN CRUCIFIED! IMO they should have forfeited the game and lost #1 for two consecutive years.

Sorry for the rant. I needed that .

Thats where I come down on it.

The fans, sponsors and business partners will tell the team if they are disapproving of a player's behavior.

After recent events involving both teams supposedly cheating and the difference in treatment, I cant even imagine how one sided the officiating would be in a possible super bowl rematch.

I've been thinking about this too. goodell is getting more arrogant about fixing things in favor of his puppet master Mara, it seems that he doesn't care that people are onto him.

Not only should it be us Patriots fans who worry about what calls are made if we play the giants, but fans of NFC playoff teams should be worried as well

This SHOULD outrage NFL* fans, and the outrage should dwarf the hatred fans feel towards the Pats, but it all seems to be dissipating and will soon be forgotten.

This clearly shows the power of controlling the narrative combined with confirmation bias.

This needs to be propagated. We need to stimulate Giants opposing fans to JOKER level intensity, scrutinizing every single call by the refs in the playoffs. Every. Single. Call.

NOTHING will hurt the Billionaire Boys Club more than its consumers realizing that the core is corrupt.

Sad that the average fan thinks the NFL is still the holy trinity of all that is good.

He thinks the rest of us mere mortals are too stupid to notice.

Looks like someone on the Giants sideline had a cell phone last night:

The Giants just can't stop cheating can they?

Roger will come down on them really hard now.

He'll probably expand the number of slots the Giants' 4th round pick can be degraded by, maybe to as much as 15 slots vs the current 12.

collingsworth last night actually said the Giants received a heavy fine and then defended the illegal communication because they won the game..unreal
