OT: How do player fines work?

I know players are paid via game checks... if they get fined does the amount come out of their check? Or do they settle any fines at the end of the season? What if it's a fine like Pacman Jones got and a check won't cover it? Just wondered how it worked!

Fines amounts seem...random. Chop block is $12172. I wonder how many meetings it took to decide between $12172 and $12173. Lol

Also foreign substances seems more egregious than a $5.7K fine. Something like that could cross the line into cheating. I can put vaseline on my jersey so it's harder to tackle me and it would only cost me $5.7K if I'm caught?

im sure some accountant working for the league created a convoluted system for determining the fine amounts... maybe the brother of the guy who made up the compensatory draft pick calculations...

It started at $10,500 with the new CBA in 2020, and it increased 3% each of the five years since then.

The fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.​

Since 2011, about $4 million a year has been used to support these worthy causes.​

So basically the NFL grabs money from the players, then takes credit for being charitable while simultaneously creating a tax deduction.

OT: How do player fines work?​

In general, they don't.

I'll give Brandon Marshall credit for giving the finger to Goodell in the nicest of ways by matching any of his cleat-related fines with a donation to a Mental Health Awareness foundation

Ultimately the FU worked and the NFL players turned it into a great initiative. Glad that Goodell got the message and caved on this one.

It's because they were set at a certain base value at the start of the CBA and go up by 3% each year.

[As an aside, there are limits on fines; among other things, a player can't end up owing money for a regular-season game b/c of fines. Also, players now receive half their salary during the regular season and half during the offseason to help with financial stability.]
