OT: DeSean Jackson / Rams Mutually Agree to a Trade

I wonder if this is real or they are just saying this to please him and his agent. For them to make it to the SB they need all their WRs healthy and he's fantastic insurance if Woods or anyone goes down like they usually do.

This doesn't make too much sense. It's not like he's a young buck looking to secure his bag and is on a team where's he's burried behind talent... He's a vet with a specific skillset who's likely on his final year or 2 in the league. He's in a situation right now on one of the hottest teams in the league and best offenses. Gets his number called here and there.

I didn't like the character assassination attempt by Chip Kelly/Eagles on him years ago...but something certainly does seem off (beyond the racist stuff). Doesn't seem like a true team player.

I agree. It makes other teams leery: If he can't be happy there, how could he be happy here?

The Rams going public lowers his trade value. It suggests they didn't have anyone who already called asking about him, nor were they able to call around and find anyone willing to offer anything for him. Chances are no one even offered a 6th or 7th for him.

Now we're at the stage where if he gets offers the Rams gets at least something for him, or if he gets no offers they say to him "we tried, you tried, and there's nowhere else to go, so will you just go out and play for us?". It's probably what the Rams want anyway, a decent option as well as some injury insurance.

This ship may have sailed but if I remember correctly, the patriots were interested in him a few years ago when he was an unrestricted free agent but they didn’t have the cap space to compete. Not out of the realm of possibility that they are interested again.

EDIT: if he gets claimed off waivers the acquiring team picks up his existing contract. If he signs as FA it’s all new. So it may be that all players have to clear waivers to protect the releasing team somewhat. Also waivers give poorer teams first shot, important for parity. But I’ve not looked at the CBA about it.

I get what you are saying and it could be a red flag but another possibility is that the competitor in him doesn’t want to be little more than a passenger on a legit SB contender. He may feel that he wouldn’t have earned the ring (if they theoretically win a title this year).

Assuming that he is healthy now, Williams is an interesting guy and at 29 is probably a better bet than Jackson at age 35.
In 2019 with Oakland he put up 42 recs for 651 yds, a healthy 15.5 ypc, plus 6 TDs. Vegas might want him back to replace Ruggs.
