Celtics, Clippers reach agreement on Rivers deal

Celtics Insider | Boston Herald

Best wishes to a class act. This is a big loss for the Celtics and a reminder of how tenuous success can be in professional sports. In this difficult off-season, few franchises have a foundation as solid as Kraft, Belichick and Brady that ensures continued success.

With the talent he had over the years hard to believe he couldn't have gotten more than 1 ring. I think Doc was a nice guy and a GOOD overall coach....have trouble when people want to call him a GREAT coach, or that it will be a "Big loss" when he leaves. Lets face it....He is getting out at just the right time...KG is done....Pierce has very little tread on the tires......Rondo is obviously a problem child. Celts are going on a bit of a downturn right now.....Good luck to the new coach but automatically he is behind the eight ball.....

Thanks!!!!!

Goodbye Doc rivers. One of the most overrated coaches of all time.

I bought into all that crap he spewed about being a celtic for life. what a fool I was. he signs a 5 year contract and when things get tough doc leaves. pathetic . I have no respect for him at all.

Eh, I wouldn't take it that far. He already went through an attempted rebuilding stage with Danny from 06-07 and that almost cost him his job. That was the worst Celtics team in a LONG time. The future is not looking too bright and with Boston media outlets having an idiotically "what have you done for me lately" attitude, I can't blame him for wanting to try something new. Doc got the most out of an aging KG and Pierce these last few years and I'll applaud him on that. Was he as great as everyone claims? No. But he was still a good coach and a nice guy. I wish him the best in LA.

First time I've been interested in the Celtics for a while if they do Jettison KG and Pierce. I liked Pierce but when 2 out of the big 3 were signed late in their career it's hard for me to get excited.

The writing on the wall about the team has been clear for some time and I'm interested in following the team from the ground up but who am I kidding, in 5 years they'll trade all of their prospects for Dwayne Wade.

I never would have FrankenSteined a Team like Ainge did, a few Years ago, but that not only produced one World Championship, it came within a whisper and an healthy Jefferson of a 2nd Championship, and we came astonishingly close, last Year, previous to which, I must admit, I'd already emotionally gone into "Egad, it's The Declining Years of Bird, Parish, and McHale Part Two" Mode...So I have to attribute some degree of that Success to Coach Rivers.

Having said that...

I love the timing of the Trade, and hope that we'll be able to move Garnett and Pierce ~ and preferably Rondo ~ and just strip things down to the bone in one Off Season, rack up the Draft Picks, and start from Scratch.

Beats the Hell out'f a Slow Slide into Toothless Mediocrity.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of blowing up something that is no longer working so this news has got me interested again.

Slow Slide into Toothless Mediocrity

uh...the title of my autobiography is already copyrighted, Grid...you'll be hearing from my lawyers...

Thread does not belong here, even as OT. Not enough of us really care.

what derailed the celtics from getting more than 1 ring was far and away the injury bug

it always hit the most important pieces at the most inopporune times...thats life, but Doc was a fantastic coach, he simply can do so much when your best players have 1 knee, or you lose a starter for the last 2 games of the finals

the year we won was amazing, and we should have won the year after and the year after, it simply didnt happen, and thats something that should be accepted

but lets be honest, injury, not the coach, was the biggest factor in there being no 2nd or 3rd ring...and possibly more

Doc's not a great coach overall, IMO, and he sucks when his team's not flooded with talent, but the Perkins trade probably cost the team a couple of titles. Ainge must have had his brain turned off the day he made that trade.

If Rivers can get Pierce and Garnett to go along with CP3 and the rest of that group (Minus Jordan, probably), he's got a shot at another ring or two before Garnett and Pierce hit the rocking chairs.

Rivers was a good coach but nothing truly special... what I give him the most credit for is reigning in 3 big egos at the same time and getting them to buy in to a team-first mentality with individual roles, at least for a while.

Thought Doc was a great coach, he will be missed. He also was a class act, and redirected and controlled a lot of negativity that could undermine this team.

I agree, though I only followed his career while he coached the Magic, I had met him on several occasions at the Arnold Palmer childrens hospital. He would get together some team members and cheerleaders and visit the wards of the critically and terminally ill children. The kids loved them and looked forward to their visits. If he is only remembered for that, then he has accomplished a lot.

it'll be a whole new team with no expectations next year. should be interesting to see.

they really need to blow it up, no point in trying to do what we did last year with garnett and pierce being shadows of their former selves.

Loved having Doc and really is a shame they didn't seal the deal as one of the all time great teams in 2010 but, I think it was time for him to go. Hopefully our new guy won't be afraid to have us grab some offensive rebounds.
