To me, the absolute best case scenario is Cam playing well this year and Mac taking over either later in the year or game 1 next year. Similar to the Mahomes situation.

Not saying we should expect the same results or that it is the only path, but I think this is the best case scenarios for all parties.

- Pats do not have to rush their QB of the future
- Cam rebuilds his value and gets a contract from another team next year
- Mac gets more time to develop, learn the system and adjust to the NFL

Now, of course, as a fan, I would prefer for Mac to takeover right away and have a Herbert-like impact. But that does not seem realistic.
I'm as much of a Mac fan as anyone (having watched him at Alabama), but having a Herbert-like impact would be a high bar, it could be argued Herbert had one of the best rookie years of a QB in modern history. 67 % of his passes completed for 4336 yards, 31 touchdowns, 10 INTs. When is the last QB that had a rookie year like that?

Because yours was based on something, I forgot
Allow me to refresh your memory.

Cam has actually won real NFL games.
Cam is a top 5 rushing NFL QB.
Cam is in year 2 of the Pats offense.
Cam may actually have more than 2 passing weapons besides Myers and White. Newton relied heavily on TE Greg Olsen in Carolina. They put up great numbers together.

Nowhere near as bad as your hero Maroney.
Well Maroneys pretty old now, but he has played in more playoff wins in his life than newton.

I'm not sure what Newton not losing his opportunity to start the regular season for the Patriots via his play last night has to do with Maroney???

I personally also don't think Newton SHOULD necessarily start the regular season given his play last year, but he definitively did not play poorly enough last night to make starting Jones de facto.

I totally agree, which is why I said it might not be realistic.

Quite high in my list of things I never thought I’d see: fnord and patjew discussing buttholes

Hey, you stick around a community long enough, eventually everyone talks about buttholes.

Cam's going to have an entire season of play just like last night. Mac will be traded, Cam will be Pats QB for foreseeable future. Yes, you read it correct.

Cam will win MVP and re-sign in NE
Francis, I really think you need to see someone.

Serious question though...is this 3-game preseason going to have a lot of games like last night, where one team treats it as their preseason showcase (like game 3 used to be) and the other plays their scrubs? Seems like Patriots and Eagles weren't in alignment about which preseason game would match up starters versus starters.

I think teams are honestly still trying to figure this out. The preseason formula has been so standard for so long now, that teams are probably in disagreement as to how best to handle it (and may change year to year). I will say for last night though, it wasn't like the Pats rolled out the starters for three quarters like it was old game 3 rules. They treated it like a game 2 and the Eagles more like a game 1 (I wonder how much Hurts going out last minute changed some of their plan though). It's going to be a bit chaotic for a while I think.

Harry must have had a concussion before he slammed to the ground on that missed catch... he legit squared up to Wynn and threw a big block on his own LT. I mean, the confusion that this kid must be playing with is beyond understanding. I actually feel bad for him. But, by the end of the season we'll hardly remember he was here.

A healthy 2021 roster of weapons should create significantly more space for pass catchers than last year's no TE + no Speed WRs offense.

Establishing early that NE has deep threat capability should all but end the 7 in the box defenses that feasted on NE's 2020 inept passing attack.
If Josh can mix it up enough on all 4 levels.....RBs out of back field, real NFL TEs releasing from the LOS, Meyers and Bourne working short and intermediate, Aghalor pulling safeties with him deep..........Should be a 7000% improvement over last year.
Meyers just might have an 80+ catch season
Pretty impressed with how fluid a runner Bourne is

If OL can give sufficient time...and if Cam maintains mechanics....and if NE TEs can stay healthy........we might just have something here.
Lots of "ifs"..........but lots more hope as well.

22-0 baby.......including a sad Tompa and distraught Gronkateers in week 4......Pricelesssssss
(Yeah......beers + a preseason rout vs jaggy future bar bouncers = eternal hope................so what )

Nitpcking, but: 23-0.....it is now a 17 game season .

Haven't heard anyone talk about Henry Anderson, but I noticed he was playing pretty late into the game last night... Not usually a great sign for guys to make the team. Wonder if he's lagging behind for some reason, or I'm just reading too many tea leaves.
I haven’t been able to figure out how the DL rotation works other than that Godchaux and Wise get their snaps in early and then are done for the day. Davis and Barmore started, but they were also on the field (along with Anderson) for the sack at 8:27 in the third for what I believe was the 37th defensive snap of the game.

And now he has a quality OL....

Agree. How did Brady do his first preseason?

Herbert had an amazing rookie season, I think possibly the best rookie season ever for a QB. I was a huge Herbert fan for the 2020 draft (was a fan before that). I even said before the draft, that I felt when all is said and done, Herbert may wind up the best QB of that 2020 class, better than Tua, better than Burrow. Now, we are only one year in on that draft class, things can change. But I stand by my statement predraft 2020.

I don’t think Mac wins the starting job, but when it’s his time, I have a ton of faith in him.

BTW, any update anywhere on Josh Uche? Since we haven't heard anything....I assume it's good news?

I like what I’ve seen from Mac Jones so far. My only concern is the lack of zip on his throws when the windows get tighter. Aside from that, he throws a pretty/catchable ball. His playing style reminds me of Eli Manning.

Stevenson is going to be a stud. Harris and Michel will be seeing him in their rear view mirror. If either struggle or go down with injury, they may not get their job back when Stevenson gets his chance.

Have to keep JJ Taylor.

Just when life could’ve been brought back to Harry, he finds a way to not only drop the ball, but then injure himself with the most unnecessary football move since the Cooks freakout in the middle of the field before getting K’O’d.

Dugger finally breaks a pass up. He hasn’t taken the leap I expected so Phillips is still the main guy at SS.
