Kontra- what are your thoughts on the qb situation, who do you want to see week 1 and who do you think we will see?
I would like to see Mac get time with the ones to develop a better feel for him. But he looks comfortable in the offense (which is Sunil at to the offense he ran at Bama). I would like to see Mac start Week 1, but he needed to blow Cam out of the water in order to get that role, IMO. Based on who gets the lion’s share of the starting reps, I don’t think BB has seen that happen just yet. Unfortunately, all signs point to Cam starting the season.

Given historical precedent last year (Stidham v. Newton choice vs the Jets), do you really think that's going to happen? I am doubtful.

I'm guessing, especially given the Patriots also tend to use regular season games 1-3 as extended training camp, that we will definitely see Jones in preseason game#3, but with the same #2s and #3s.

But I have been previously and will be wrong again in the future because I cant tell said future...only guess at it based on past decisions in somewhat similar circumstances.
playing Stidham in week 17 vs the handling of you qb of the future who also happens to your best Qb today are wildly different things.

Do they also numb your b-hole?

I'm on a massive capsaicin kick the last 2 years and at this point my mouth and stomach is almost never the problem, it's sting ring.
They have the opposite effect on my b-hole.

Some quick thoughts. I admit I fell asleep in the second half. So forgive me if something happened in the second half that might contradict a point. Take them for what they are worth.

  • Anyone hoping for Mac Jones to start day one had their hopes dashed last night. Not that Jones did anything wrong, but Cam just played really well. He was decisive in his throws and he had zip on the ball. Yes, it was against the Eagles' second defense, but he was sharp. I think Cam had to lose the starting job this preseason for Jones to start and really hasn't shown much in the preseason games to lose the job.
  • Jones answered a lot of his critics last night. Yes, we take it with a grain of salt because it was an exhibition game, but Jones showed some real mobility and you definitely couldn't question his arm strength. Jones moved around better than Brady could (although he clearly hasn't shown yet that he has Brady's innate ability to sense the pressure and step up right out of the pocket at the exact right time). That pass to Harry down the field was perfect. Maybe better than what Brady would have done. And most of his other passes were lasers. And no I am not saying he is better or even in the same hemisphere as Brady, just using Brady as a comparison.
  • Jones does need to work on his two minute clock management. No way should he have spiked the ball on third down and about 12 seconds when they were so far away from the end zone in the first half. He should have quickly snapped the ball and tried to get the first down by throwing towards the sidelines so that the receiver should have gotten out of bounds or just let the play clock run out.
  • There was a lot of talk about Judon being another Adalius Thomas (a part of the Ravens system which made him play far better than the talent he really has). But the way Judon has played this preseason and if he transfers this level of play into the regular season, maybe the Ravens were holding him back. Right now, Judon is unstoppable and unblockable. I expect that to change in the regular season when teams start to scheme for him, but it is good to have a player on the d-line again that players have to scheme for.
  • I don't think the team should trade Sony Michel as many expecting. The way he has been playing thus far, he is finally the guy the Pats thought they were drafting. He seems to be far more elusive than he was in previous years. Now if they can get an impact player or a high draft pick for him (doubtful), I would say trade him. Otherwise, losing him isn't worth a later pick. I think if the Pats trade Michel for a fifth rounder say, I think they were stupid. They may get higher than that in a compensatory pick if he plays like he is going into the regular season. And if he proves he could be a receiver for this offense, I may consider re-signing him next off season and letting James White walk since White will be 30 next year.
  • I think this is the year Brandon Bolden does not make the team. I don't think his special teams ability will cut it this year with so many good RBs on the team. Who else do you cut from this group?
  • I think by the end of the year, the rest of the league and fans will know who Jakobi Meyers is. I think he might be the next Edelman. Maybe not as good as Edelman, but the nobody WR that no one wanted who becomes a top WR in the league. Meyers is never going to be in Julio Jones or other elite WRs category. But I think he will be a legitimate #1 who could have 100 catches every season with 1,000-1,200 yards.

No question that Cam threw some nice passes (even though his motion is still ugly). The issue is - he took forever before pulling the trigger and almost only looked to Meyers. This won't work facing regular season starting defenses. I'm convinced he'll regress to what we saw last year by week 3. The only true hangup is when BB allows Josh to start giving Mac practice reps with the 1's. When that happens, it's over.
It will be time to talk 2022 draft if Mac is the QB.

The defense they played last week was exceptional, this week not so much... even with backups with a smattering of starters mixed in... they're simply not a good team. This tells me the Patriots are somewhere in between last weeks team and this weeks team in terms of level of play.

The QB's looked good as you'd expect them to against a team that had trouble defending the pass. I was heartened by what I heard about them shutting down the Eagles pass rush in joint practice, despite this inability to cover they actually had a decent pass rush last year. Cam played the way Cam should play. He threw 9 passes in three series. He's a thrower not a passer. His darts to Jakobi and others in the middle of the field is his bread and butter, his inaccurate throws to check down RB's is still maddening though... James White had to make a spectacular grab to keep the ball in play and could have picked up additional yards if not for the errant throw. Mac was the opposite of Cam but also threw a questionable ball over the middle which had me thinking either he or the receiver screwed up. If Harry connects on that long strike both guy's day looks a lot more impressive.

The RB's are good and they're deep, we know this. I still have Stevenson getting the Foxboro flu or placed on the IR so they can bring him back late if they have injury issues, his ball control issues and last place on the depth chart cement that barring injury or trade.

The OL is what we expected, very good and powerful. I want to go back and watch the backups like Tex suggests. I did that against Washington and two players stood out especially in the run game, Cajuste and Marcus Martin looked like road pavers and Hoyer stayed clean in the pocket. If Cajuste can finally give us some football we may have some real depth at the position outside of Herron and maybe have a swing guy who can play some guard with effectiveness.

TE's were pretty much non-existent and I suspect Asiasi was called upon to block a lot more than run pass routes. The coaches are grading him on that as well, so let's review the film and see what was asked of him and how he performed before we suggest he sucked because he didn't light up the box score.

WR's were good, have been, will continue to be. Cam is confident throwing to the middle of the field where big WR's like Jakobi and Bourne do their best work. Mac throws outside the numbers more and both guys were throwing well. I wonder if N'Keal got hurt on that dive, if not I wouldn't rule him out just yet. Yes he should have caught it, but he was open downfield and that's what you want to see... say what you want about him but the kid catches almost everything, hands haven't been an issue. Plus if TE depth gets thin again he can fill in at that move TE position. I'll let the ghost of N'Keal die once he's gone... course now he may be injured again. Gunner is eventually the future in the slot once Mac's starting, Cam has issues with small targets but Gunner can get open and catch it.

DT's... they look really good with Carl Davis, Christian Barmore and eventually Lawrence Guy when he returns. Godchaux sucks... he gets blown off the ball in the run game and as of yet has done nothing in pass rush. What's frustrating most of all is they developed Adam Butler from poor run defender to good run defender then let him walk for less money than they paid Davon. Now what... we need to wait for them to coach Godchaux up so he can defend the run? Why not just pay Butler less money instead? Speaking of which... did Henry Anderson play last night at all? He has been invisible all offseason. Montravius Adams and Akeem Spence are jags. Some depth would be nice here but I suspect BB won't admit he and his personnel guys screwed up and we'll see Godchaux until he's so obviously godawful that they actually replace him. I don't get this obsession with DT's who can pressure but suck against the run, I never will... why not both like Davis, Barmore and Guy?

LBer's are great, a strength. Size, speed, depth... I hope Uche is okay after getting injured. He was kind of fragile in college which makes me think he's a part time player until he gets more durable.

DB's looked good, even against Flacco who can still make rudimentary throws. That they look decent with Gilmore and Jones out is great, add those two back to a more improved mix and we have a great group again. The safeties look solid, Duggar made a great ranging FS type play to prevent a TD in the end zone. We knew he could tackle, it's good to see him taking the right angles. For anyone who wants to moan about dropped passes by Pat's WR's take a look at high priced hood ornament Devonta Smith last night... the kid was dropping everything. I expect him to improve but preseason is about improvement, the Pats receivers meanwhile caught almost everything.

ST's look decent, they need to block better on return teams.

Other than the Seattle game last year, I thought Cam looked better than he ever has since joining our team. Mac continues to impress me. His poise, the way the offense runs, the fluidity it has when he is in there and also I was very impressed with his arm strength. The two passes that stood out to me were the bomb to Harry and the rifle to Gunner.
Too bad that for Cam to look good he has to play against 2nd and 3rd stringers

I honestly do hope Cam can play like a few of those snaps looked in the 1st qtr against a 2nd string D. (see the crosser to Bourne)
I just don't believe he can - consistently. (see the horrible checkdown to White)
I fully get that if Mac plays he won't be as proficient as we've seen in preseason-no-scheme defenses. But I've seen enough to know that he can handle the process and has the tools to grow, even quickly. So, does Cam's rah-rah "leadership" and occasional running ability supersede the system tools that Mac possesses and the need to move on to the future with a guy that can re-energize the fan base - and that is a huge part of this whole thing from an ownership standpoint. Even if Cam plays almost all year, and does fairly well, are they going bring him back with a longer term contract? Not when high-1st-round Mac has shown the capacity he has already. that should really seal the deal.

Making chili tonight!

You are incorrect, there were a few starters on the Philly defense last night that played. Either way, it was a big improvement from him.

Haven't heard anyone talk about Henry Anderson, but I noticed he was playing pretty late into the game last night... Not usually a great sign for guys to make the team. Wonder if he's lagging behind for some reason, or I'm just reading too many tea leaves.

Happened last week too. May mean something, may not. What we do know is that there are a lot of players on the DL making a legitimate push for a roster spot, and it's not inconceivable Anderson finds himself the odd one out.

Per Fakebook

The Pats vs Eagles game began with Eagles fans booing the Patriots.

The game ended with Eagles fans booing the Eagles.
They booed mightily when they went into the locker room at halftime and the exodus from the stadium began. By the time I left with 2 minutes left in the game, they were barely 4 people in my section and I never saw Eagles fan so beat down........It was so wonderful.........
