Both QBs looked GREAT. I think we can all agree that Newton needs to do consecutively before we say "this is the new Cam" but if you can't objectively look at his performance in this game and say it was good, you're bringing a pre-determined opinion into the equation. Mac is the future, but Cam played well in THIS game. There's nothing wrong with saying that.
And see, you may not be wrong about the individual observations, but to say it was the same old Cam... I just can't agree. He stepped UP in the pocket (which I don't consider dancing), and was accurate with his throws. Showed nice touch on the TD to Meyers to let him catch and run with it, and the one time I thought it looked awkward was the scramble dump off to White (but I think the bobble there was on White, not on Cam's throw).
Again, it's one quarter of a preseason game. It proves nothing long term. I just think we get so caught up in "If I say a nice thing about Cam, people will think I'm a homer" that we refuse to acknowledge he played well. As though if we say too many positive things about him, Belichick will trade Mac Jones.
No question that Cam threw some nice passes (even though his motion is still ugly). The issue is - he took forever before pulling the trigger and almost only looked to Meyers. This won't work facing regular season starting defenses. I'm convinced he'll regress to what we saw last year by week 3. The only true hangup is when BB allows Josh to start giving Mac practice reps with the 1's. When that happens, it's over.
Its pre-season but one thing you can take away is that Mac Jones looks like a QB. he gets the ball out of his hands fast, is accurate and is pretty smart player at scanning the field. Basically what we heard about him in the draft has translated well to the practice field and now the pre-season games.
he fits perfectly into what this offense wants to do. and is why Jimmy G excelled so well here in bradys absence.
If the ones play, I seriously hope we see Mac play with them next week. Otherwise, it seems pretty obvious that BB, unfortunately, still considers Cam the starting QB. At least for the time being.
I was thinking the same thing about next week. I think we need to see what Mac can do with the 1s. We know what Cam is. We need to see what Mac can do with our first team in a game setting.
I do not know if he should or should not start game 1, but I know he likely will have to start at some point this season (I do not trust Cam to stay healthy and/or have sustained success). I know he gets reps with them in practice, but I'd love it to see it in a game for two or three series.

We live in a society where people feel everything has to be all or nothing and it isn’t.
As ab NFL QB Newton sucks. That’s a fact. But he doesnt suck because he is incapable of making a play or stringing plays together.
The reason is sucks is that because of the issues that are very obvious with the way he sees the field and processes what he sees as well as his accuracy, is that he makes good plays far less often than a good QB does.
Nathan Peterman has successful plays. He just doesn’t have them with the frequency of a good QB.
Yes if Newton is your qb you will get some good plays. You will always have BUT, SEATTLE. But you won’t have enough of them to win in this league. A few preseason passes doesn’t change that, he is what he is.

Not necessarily. I think regardless of who the starter is, there's a good chance we're keeping Hoyer as the QB3. He would run the scout team in that case.

Then Jones sits on the sidelines and watches practice?
The point wasn’t he runs the scout team the point was he doesn’t get reps in the offense because Newton is the starter and getting them. Maybe I was unclear.
They played an exhibition game against bad team that quit on the game before it even started, thanks to Hurts having to go to the hospital. So there's very little that can be taken from the game, really. So I'll just point out a couple of nuggets that I thought were pull worthy.
People are overrating Newton's performance. He's still having to overthrow the ball because of his shoulder, and feasting on disinterested stiffs is meaningless for a former MVP. That doesn't mean he was bad by any stretch of the imagination, or that people shouldn't take positives from his performance, but the overhyping has been crazy, both here and in the media this morning.
People are looking past what I think was the best sign from Jones, which wasn't his arm strength, but his ability to shrug off pass rushers while keeping his head focused downfield. That's something where the quality of the opponent isn't as determinative, and it's a good sign for the future. Which brings me to...
I don't know if Jones is a better NFL player than Cam as of today, but I do know that he's currently doing much better at the fundamentals of the game. I still expect BB to make Cam the week one starter, but Belichick may have found his JAG 2.0.
Props to Meyers. I say that not for his catches, but for his run along the sidelines that got him into the end zone. He's come a long way since his rookie season, and he's making himself into a legitimate WR3. Congrats to him.
BB should have done everything humanly possible to get the Cardinals to make the Harry-for-Isabella swap. He'd have had a full offseason to evaluate a short speed guy instead of wasting the same time on an already known tall statue.
Nordin needs to make sure that he sends flowers and chocolates to BB, along with an "I know, but it was just a one game case of jitters" card.
Corner's an issue for this team. It's going to be an issue even if Gilmore gets back in the lineup, too, because the depth's not there.
I still haven't seen anything to make me confident that this team has a legitimate TE3.
Unless he's just screwing around and looking to create situations for his QBs (which is entirely possible, particularly the non-challenge in week 1), BB needs to step up his play challenging to get it back to regular season form.
Is running the scout team for a year really a bad thing? You have to learn about other teams, other schemes and how to stop them. It gives you experience and perspective.
Not necessarily. I think regardless of who the starter is, there's a good chance we're keeping Hoyer as the QB3. He would run the scout team in that case.
I would prefer Mac to start because I love what I am seeing so far. But I do not think he absolutely NEEDS to start week 1 for us to have a good season or to maximize Mac's development. Of course, as fans, we all want to see the shiny new toy and not suffer through another season of a guy that likely cannot do the job.
