Game Day Thread Official Preseason Game Day Thread- Pats @ Eagles

THIS IS OUR LIVE GAME DAY THREAD:

This is where we gather to follow things on Game Day. Obviously, emotions tend to be high so if anyone gets a little crazy, the use of the “Mute” button is encouraged on anyone who may be annoying to you to control your experience and to allow the moderators to also enjoy the game.

At the same time, please take a deep breath before over-reacting for the sake of making this a pleasant experience for everyone.

I like what I’ve seen from Judon too, but the overreaction from Patriots fans/pundits is so over the top right now it’d downright embarrassing. They’ve now played a couple of preseason games against a grab bag of starters/backups, going against a couple of terrible QBs who might be finished in the NFL.

I’ve seen posts saying Judon is playing at Hall of Fame level, steal of the offseason, tremendous bargain, etc. I’d like to see one meaningful game before declaring any free agents hits or misses.
Yeah, I agree. However, it isn’t as if he’s an unknown commodity. He was a beast in BAL & his skills seem to translate well in BB’s system, which should only augment itself in the season. I guess the best way to describe it is...yes, you see it, but you can also feel it.

Somebody come up with a reason you don’t start ya boy cam wk1.

I said it the minute they took him, and said I wanted him before that. Judon was ranked 52nd among DE's, which is an absolute joke. He's all over the place out there and worth every penny, and more, that the Pats paid him.

The ONLY way Mac starts wk 1 is if Cam gets hurt in the next 2 weeks. But, I hope Mac gets in by week 5-7. I don't want to waste a year treading water.

Haven't heard anyone talk about Henry Anderson, but I noticed he was playing pretty late into the game last night... Not usually a great sign for guys to make the team. Wonder if he's lagging behind for some reason, or I'm just reading too many tea leaves.
Happened last week too. May mean something, may not. What we do know is that there are a lot of players on the DL making a legitimate push for a roster spot, and it's not inconceivable Anderson finds himself the odd one out.
I don't see Anderson being cut, but he is likely to be lower on the depth chart than many of us thought a few months ago. Barmore has come on strong very early and taken one of the higher spots. Maybe even a starter spot before long. While Davis was good last year, he has stepped it up to another level this year, and fits in really well with what the Patriots want to do. As does Godchaux, though he has been slightly disappointing, but is still a better fit.

It kind of leads one to ask, what does Anderson do? You want a 3rd down pass rushing specialist? Keep Chase. You want to stop the run? Put in Davis and Godchaux. You want an all rounder? Guy and Barmore are better options. You want a more traditional 4-3 option that can lean on run defense? Wise is the better answer most likely. Anderson would fit much better in a more traditional 4-3 as a smaller DT. But that isn't much of what the Pats do right now. I still think he makes the team, but the way things are looking and how other guys have stepped up, he just won't see the field much.

To me, Anderson plays a similar position to Wise. Mostly lines up on the edge so I don't see him directly competing for a spot with guys like Davis/Spence, but way too big to be considered the same position as guys like Judon, Uche. I see him as a 3-4 DE who would still play DE in a 4 man front most of the time as opposed to moving inside. The fact that we paid Wise so much might indicate that role is important to the team and requires a backup like Anderson.

Both wise and Anderson are backups. But both are important against teams like baltimore, Philly etc that are heavy run teams.
In our base D we play 2 DTs. Anderson fits that role but seems behind other players. Wise does not.
We play 2 off the ball LBs and 2 edge guys. In the base D these are DE/OLBs in the 260 lb range. (Judon, kvn, wino, Perkins, maybe uche or Jennings)
Against a heavy run team or in certain down and distance, we will replace and edge guy with a “3-4 DE” type. This would be wise or Anderson. We seem to prefer to stay in nickel against these teams rather than a true 3-4.
The other roles for these guys are inside rushers on passing downs.
Front 6 players are going to be in a huge competition for playing time, and the best part of the scheme and personnel versatility is we can mix and match them almost in any combination.

I’m starting to catch a vibe that Anderson might be this year’s surprise cut. It reminds me of how Pennel was used sparingly in 2019 preseason and played late in the game with 3rd stringers.

Not only that but just looking at the other players at Anderson’s position and the max number of DTs/Big DEs they can keep. He’s not going to be kept before Guy, Godcheaux or Barmore. Davis fills a more important role as a true NT. Wise got too much guaranteed money to supplant and has a more specific role. The Patriots also seem to like Byron Cowart just based on how much he played last season. Once he’s off the PUP, the Pats could see Cowart giving them better or the same value at that position for about $4 million less over the next 2 seasons.

Yep but I don't think he played DE the 1st Qtr on Thurs and did OK IMO. Seemed to get a decent push and was in on a few run stops (vs 2nd stringers mind you)

The problem is they already have Guy, Godchaux, Barmore, Wise and Davis as the DL/DT types. Including HA will the really keep 6 pure DL-men?

2. Uche update: Promising second-year outside linebacker Josh Uche left Thursday's game after six plays, and it's unclear what sidelined him, though my understanding is it does not involve long-term ramifications.
Good news that Uche does not appear to have a serious injury

I think this has more to do with our injuries/lack of DT quality and depth than Cowart playing really well.
