Who knows. Belichick seems to be stubborn and very concerned about when people question his decisions in recent years. So I cannot put it completely past him that he would do it especially since he might have though he had a good enough defense and running game to be competitive. But he seems to be too smart to risk tanking a season and tarnishing his legacy to prove a point.
You have to draft or trade for WRs. FA has had slim pickings. So the obvious question is, what would you have done?

If they end up with a top five pick and out of the running for a QB maybe take an impact defensive player, a stud WR, or a LT and the wait another year to suck with Mac and then Go for the QB.

Unfortunately, even at full strength, this team's ceiling was a borderline playoff team that can beat the bad teams and not the good teams (despite the win against the Bills). After week one, this team didn't look like it was any better than it was last year even with Judon and Gonzalez. They looked like they took a step back.
They looked fine on defense, despite being without two of the Joneses. The problem was that basically their entire OL was injured for much of the preseason, and they were still missing at least two of their projected starters on OL (I don't know if Anderson was expected to start at RT, but I know Mafi and Sow weren't).

They got the WR1 from the SB champs. I disliked the move, but they literally addressed their WR issue.
People seem not to have noticed that we've spent a ton of money on receivers over the last few years: Algholor, Jonnu, Hunter Henry, Bourne, Smith-Schuster, Gesicki.

Sure, there are other guys we could've gotten, like Hopkins, but how would they do with Mac as their QB? Not well I'm guessing.

Look at Jonnu. He's going to triple his Patriots production in half a season.

That time of the month? I feel for you. My girlfriend gets really cranky too. I hope you got a lot of Midol.

Seriously, you really should seek help for the fact that I get so under your skin. It isn't healthy. You will have a heart attack.

It’s in such poor taste to discuss your girlfriend’s bleeding vagina on a football forum, Rob. Please be better than that, for her sake.

Mac sucks and always has.

92.5 rating as a rookie.

basically the definition of Suck.

If the Patriots draft a defensive player with their first pick next year, whoever is the GM should be yeeted into the Sun.

They could have traded for AJ Brown. Brown grew up a Patriots fan. He said he cried when he wasn't drafted by the Patriots. The Pats could have traded for him.

Christian Kirk is playing very well. Over 1100 yards and eight TDs last year and on track for the same this year. He was a free agent in 2022.

Those are two WRs right there.

They addressed what?..A WR that is not a game changer or a game breaker with sonic speed?... Belichick still thinks he has Brady who can take 3rd and 4th depth talent receiving corps and make them into a championship offense - He continues to take other teams trash and try and make it work - The Steelers and Chiefs knew he wasn't worth a roster spot to keep - He has not taken a stud sure fire receiver in free agency since Moss left 13 years ago and Edelman by far was his best find since then.

Draft order updated after the early slate of Sunday afternoon games:

  1. Arizona Cardinals
  2. Chicago Bears (via Carolina Panthers)
  3. Chicago Bears
  4. New England Patriots
If that draft order holds true the Patriots need to trade up with the Bears to get a franchise QB. I'm sure the Bears will be fine with taking Harrison Jr. as the consolation prize to waiting to pick. They would still have the #3 and #4 picks overall.

Take a look at the #2 prospect.

2. Drake Maye, North Carolina

"Maye (6-5, 220) is the tallest quarterback on this list, and he offers a blend of skills that’s going to keep him in the conversation for No. 1 pick. Maye had a breakout season with 4,321 passing yards, 38 TDs and seven interceptions, and he added 698 yards and seven TDs. He had six games with at least 300 yards passing and three or more TDs last season. Maye will face some of the same nit-picks as Williams as far as off-balance throws and whether he leaves the pocket too soon, but he’s the second franchise quarterback in this draft."

With the benefit of hindsight the right move in the 2021 draft was to move up for Parsons. Get Mills as a bridge and then you sit tight and wait for the next guy, the true heir to Brady. Who knows maybe Mac falls that far down anyway and they get him.

And starting of your HC tenure with Brucshi, law, brown, Malloy, willie and Ted Johnson helps too..
Oh, really? How were these players under the previous guy?

Willie McGinest was considered the biggest bust by Patriot fans, always injured, never productive. Bruschi was a backup, fringe player. Good for drinking games though. Troy Brown was a punt returner. These guys made their names under Belichick.

I am just trying to bond with my "bro". I wanted to show you can understand that your obsession with me is because of your situation.

They could have drafted DK Metcalf instead of N'Keal Harry - Belichick has a patent on missing talent at the WR position in the draft - There is another one that was a miss - of course 7 other receivers went before DK too.

Well, if he cried after not getting picked, guess whose shoulder he cried on?

Jalen Hurts. Hurts was sitting right next to him when he was drafted. Guess why? They are best friends. His stated goal was to play with his best friend. Maybe the Patriots would have traded for Hurts too! Let's be real.

As for Christian Kirk, is he the type of #1 you want here? I bet he'd do nothing with Mac, based on his playing style. Long baller. He certainly get paid like a #1. $18m a year and $35m guaranteed.

Maye may jump to the #1 spot based on what has gone on with Williams over the last month from his play on the field, his reaction to it, and rumors he is demanding ownership stake from whoever drafts him.

Bill was given the task to rebuild this team after Brady left. It’s now year 4 and based on the lack of progress the rebuild appears to have failed. Common sense says it’s time for a new approach with new leadership to get it right.

This of course is not saying Bill always sucked as a coach and he shouldn’t make the hall of fame. But that stuff won’t help this team get out of its rut.
