Official 2022 Tompa Bay Gronkaneers Thread

A couple months? That’s stupid as hell to only say that without further details. They obviously know what happened by now. Either he has a knee injury bad enough that he’s done for the year, such as a torn ACL, OR he has something less severe such as a torn MCL which does indeed have a recovery of around 6-8 weeks so a couple months. So why not just tell us?

Dude ain’t coming back

If they knew for sure that it was an ACL issue, they'd have already shelved him (unless they're playing games for some reason, which doesn't seem likely in this case). So, to me, it seems likely that they're either waiting to see which other ligaments are compromised, and how badly, or they just aren't positive about the ACL yet.

ACL is very easy to test for. The majority can be done on the field. The rest will be shown after an MRI which he must have had by now.

Tom Brady continues to rank as the top NFL player in sales of officially licensed NFL merchandise. He topped the year-end list from the NFLPA, and is again No. 1 three months later on their preseason top-50 list. Here's the top 20:

Todd Bowles on Ryan Jensen: “We don’t know the severity of it per se, but I do know he’ll miss some significant time, up to a couple of months, whether he’ll be back later in the season, November or December, that depends on what they find. He won’t be available anytime soon.”

The part in bold is why I've posted what I have about

it seems likely that they're either waiting to see which other ligaments are compromised, and how badly, or they just aren't positive about the ACL yet.

Bowles said there has been discussions about bringing in a veteran center, but “not heavy discussions.” Hainsey and Nick Leverett battling right now.

How do you not know the severity of it? Am I missing something? When a player gets hurt in a game during the season we find out pretty fast what happened and the timeline.

Swelling can interfere with diagnosing.

It would lead me to believe the ACL is damaged but they’re not sure if it’s torn to the point it requires surgery. I’m just speculating. That they need the swelling to subside would indicate they need to get a clearer look to assess the severity of the ligament damage, and perhaps see how much support it provides without the swelling.

My guess is ACL surgery is likely and they’re just holding out hope that it can strengthen/stabilize to the point he can eventually gut it out through the late season. This is just my best guess and hope I’m wrong.

Losing Jensen is huge. Only good news is it’s July so plenty of time to find a decent replacement and for Brady to get them up to speed.

Some more good news is that they had Hainsey, their 3rd round pick from last year, working with A.Q. Shipley all offseason. Whether that translates to quality play on the field is, obviously, TBD, but it's at least something.

I don’t see why Jensen is considered so vitally important except his leadership and tone setting. Just going around looking at articles from this offseason and the two offseasons prior he’s good sure, but he’s most known for starting every game and playing violently. But his pass blocking especially is pretty middle of the pack.

With him going down, Tampa Bay is now replacing the entire interior OL.

Leader, nastiness and good rapport with Tom.

I mean, that’s true in a literal sense but there’s a big asterisk here. Marpet retired but Shaq Mason is not only possibly better but it goes without saying that he and Brady have familiarly. Alex Cappa meanwhile is just kind of ok but not worth a big payday and only played in the Washington game during the entire 2020 super bowl run.

We'll see, but...

  • Mason and Marpet played different sides, and you're underrating Marpet
  • Mason is learning the scheme of a new team
  • Mason is being paired with a new OT (to him) as well as the second year center
  • The center makes the line calls, and a long-term veteran is being replaced by a 2nd year guy who's never snapped to Brady in a game
  • The LG was already a major question mark, even being bookended by Smith/Jensen
  • Marpet was good enough to cover both his man, and some of Smith's blown blocks. The replacement won't be doing that, so that's even more pressure on the center
  • Mason's better in the run game than in pass pro, and it's the pass pro that will be most impacted by the Jensen injury

Bucs linebacker Grant Stuard is in a bucket hat, so looks like he’s being held out today. Was also held out in OTAs and minicamp with an undisclosed injury.

For the second day in a row, Brandon Walton is the first-string left guard, with Luke Goedeke at left guard and Aaron Stinnie at right guard on second line. Hainsey on first line at center again.
