OBJ catch - what am I even looking at?

Gloves or not, OBJ backhanded that ball. None of the photos in the first few seconds of that video (I avoid Reilly content these day) were demonstrative of a backhanded 1 handed catch. That's the key element that I thought was particularly novel, and therefore made the thread.

The only catch that anyone else here has cited that looked even close to a backhanded one was Cooks' from @bbobbo's post - yet Cooks turned his shoulders and hips to face the flight of the ball, so it didn't really seem like a backhanded catch.

Notes for those who hate this thread because they're apparently triggered by OBJ:

1. I'm not an OBJ apologist or fanboy. Just admire some of his skills. I thought this catch looked unusual, so I posted it. I would've regardless of whether OBJ, Dez, Antonio, Megatron, or anyone else was the one to backhand catch a pro sized football thrown from ~20 yards away. Also, as I said, this looked unusual to me, so I don't really care that it was done during warm-ups to a preseason game.

2. A cool catch is not a zero-sum contest. A number of post here are "oh here's a Patriot doing it in a game, that's a real man's catch" - yeah those are awesome catches too. Make a thread about them if you want. People probably did at the time they were caught.

Well thanks for watching a few seconds of a video that has a whole section where players try to catch balls one handed without the glove (2-7) and then they show players trying to catch with the glove(every single one) Some of which were backhanded.

You asked how something was possible, as if your mind was playing tricks on you, I provided how something was possible, and you were all "ehhh whatever, i dont like that one dude demonstrating how the catch is easy to do so ill dismiss it"

Solid bruh.

The best one-handed catch that I ever saw was made by Randy Moss against the Fins in 2007. He was double teamed on a long bomb and held off the defender on his left with his left arm while he caught the ball with his back to the pass. He ended up catching the ball in the crook of his right elbow from behind.

The play starts at the 2 minute mark of this video...

They used to put stickem on the crook of their elbows. Now they've got those elbow gloves.

anyone can catch one handed with those gloves.

Wow. Every receiver can do it.

The NFL* is looking into banning them. You know what? I want somebody looking into sticky helmets too.

Catching it with his right hand with the ball arriving from his right side (backhanding) seems to me to require an extra amount of hand-eye coordination / timing as compared to only decelerating the ball over a longer period of time by matching its motion with your hands, which is the normal method for a one-handed catch.

Agreed

Now the thing is - this is warm ups

You REALLY don't want him doing that in the games. Yeah it makes the highlight reels but that's why he's prone to drops in big games.

Still - you gotta appreciate it (I have to think this guy has big hands too)

That exotic dancer in the video that was JUST wearing the gloves didn't appear to have big hands.

Granted, she didn't catch the ball backhand, at least I don't think. I wasn't focusing right.

Yeah doing that in a game, even if wide-open, would be prima donna type stuff.

Apparently OBJ's hands measured 10" at the combine.

For reference, I heard on the Quick Slants podcast a couple nights ago that Cooks' hands are like 9 5/8" so hopefully he has a few catches stored up in those hands for us.

We've all been punked. That was the David Lynch director's cut of pregame. In reality, what we saw was backwards tape of what really happened. That made it look unusually good and yrev impressive.

That's called an unnecessary one handed catch but if the camera's rolling might as well show off

All hail OBJ, King of the Millennials!

Makes cool looking catches in pre-season practices, but in the playoffs he looks like s**t.

what am I even looking at?

A prima donna show off who gags in the clutch.
