Cool, so you agree with my first sentence then:

“All it means is it rehabs his trade value and they can command more in return in a trade next offseason.”
Not really... he will only have 1 year left on his deal by then.... who is going to give a 1st rounder for a guy with 1 year left?

That was the hypothetical I was already thinking about. If Jimmy plays really well, whether they seal the deal at the end of not, his value is boosted.
They can't get a first rounder for him right now. If he plays well in 2021, they still won't be able to get a 1st rounder for him.
Let's say they take Jones at #3: If he doesn't look good at all in a redshirt year behind JG, you still have a QB who you know can play well for you. If Jones looks good enough to take over in year 2, you have a QB who played well and now has increased trade value. Unless Jimmy is going to be a locker room lawyer and kill your team chemistry, there's really on downside to keeping him for 2021, and there's never really been a reason to think that JG is that kind of bad apple.

Now, if they get a great deal that they can't pass up, then the value conversation shifts. But I don't think there's any NEED to move him.
Let's just say it's a risk.

In the context of NFL success, neither, it was Ken Stabler. College success, the last great Alabama QB was Mac Jones.
I was commenting on the idea that Fields can’t be great because of OSU QB’s before him. I realize that wasn’t your position, but that was what I was referring to.

Who do you see as a pro equivalent to him?
Not that it matters, but when is the last time in Ohio State quarterback (besides overrated Haskins) played a game in the NFL?
Did Josh Allen break the Wyoming curse?

I'm honestly surprised we're still doing this. It means nothing.

I get that, sure - but, as I've said before, if I'm Jimmy, I want to get into a situation where the job is mine to lose (and with some guaranteed money), not one where they're waiting for me to die to begin their sunshine years.
If I'm Jimmy, I want my money.

You cannot use that type of reasoning. There is no any single college that constantly produce a start QB in the NFL. Otherwise, every NFL team would just pick that college.

IMO - There are QBs that has "high ceiling" and "great potential". But, if an NFL team or teams cannot unlock that, the draft pick is wasted.

heard a lot of crap today but one I heard about Shanahan acting like an arrogant douchebag in an interview has convinced me he's picking Jones at #3, starting him game one and getting a #2 round pick for Garrop. The Pats are in competition with Chicago and one other team for the right to sign JG. Mike Lombardi thinks the Pats are trading DOWN as has been MY OPINION (see that Rung 666? OPINION...don't go beserk) the last month.

Very much appreciate the work you put in BGC fleshing out all these gems at CB, OL and LB...I'm fine with multiple 2nd's and 3rd's plus JG if it works out...I say take a chance on that Bama roadgrader with the injury history in the 2nd...I'd consider that a HUGE steal

It’s happened before: The Jaguars traded Rob Johnson to the Bills in 1998 in exchange for their 1st and 4th round picks, and he was in the last year of his deal. Then Buffalo immediately signed him to a 5-year deal. I know I had to go back pretty far for this example but there is precedent. And Johnson had only one career start in three seasons up to that point. Garoppolo actually has Super Bowl experience. If he has a great 2021 it’s not out of the realm of possibility a team trades a 1st for him and tries to extend him.

there’s always a first time for everything.
As a Columbus resident and Fields fan, I was simply questioning the conflicting evaluations of some experts.

And how'd that work out for them? Do you think it was a success to the point that it would lead another team to do the same?

His whole "we might be dead Sunday" routine was lamesauce. I mean, seriously, just grow up.

And I said "flailing" because there is nothing good for SF coming out of that statement. I've already seen the national/Boston writers jumping all over it with comments like: there goes Jimmy's trade value. KS is essentially devaluing one of his assets and very possibly causing hard feelings.

I don't see things as cut and dried "how much are you paying me?" situations. My guess with Jimmy is that he could land a pretty good deal right now. The down side is a fall off the cliff, Trubisky style (if he gets benched for a kid), the upside minimal. Comments like this also reinforce the impatience of the fans he'll be playing before.

There was no reason for KS to phrase it the way he did.
How many teams would give that job to lose to Jimmy? Any? Given his unreliability it’s hard to expect a team to accept his 25 mill contract and consider him the answer.

Man I don’t know why teams do what they do, go ask them. All I can tell you is what has happened before. Teams kept trading high draft picks and dumping big money for Sam Bradford even though he was an injury prone bum. Biggest con artist in league history, good for him. Not unthinkable to think a team might want to pay up for Garoppolo next year if he has a great season this year. If you don’t agree then that’s fine, I don’t know what else to tell you.

I knew that the league put a stop to reporters yakking on twitter....but never knew that teams used to announce picks before the draft. Pretty cool....

If I don't have my timelines confused, then I believe that in the years immediately preceding the rookie salary scale, teams that had the first overall pick and were going to take a QB had to enter into negotiations real early in order to try to avoid holdouts that sometimes ran into TC...Things are much more mysterious nowadays...

They are taking mac jones I bet. I doubt they don't know who they are going to take at #3

I don't think they know for certain who they are taking since they don't know for certain who the Jets are taking..... but the are positioning themselves right now to say - and I guarantee you this is coming - "we got the guy we wanted all along".

I'm finally there as well. He's ready for this to be over and so am I.
