NFL Trade Deadline Discourse

They're not saying that. They're saying that we are still in year one of a rebuild, albeit one that is well in advance of expectations, and there's no point in sabotaging that rebuild for the sake of half season reclamation projects.

Someone posted to me at the weekend about all the people the Patriots need to replace in the coming two years: Hooper, Henry, Chaisson, Hawkins, Tonga, Moses, Onwenu, three of our linebackers, Pop, maybe Boutte, Bradbury to name more than a few. It's not as though the rebuild is complete. The more picks they have, the better they can accomplish that. Sacrificing those picks for rentals that probably don't move the needle outside of depth makes the rebuild harder.

I'm sure they had targets, some of whom probably weren't traded to us because they're in the division. On some, they probably balked at the price. That happens.

Right on the money. Vrabel isn't sending a message that he's giving up on the season, he's sending the message that he believes in this team,

Curran and Perry wanted to trade Diggs plus a high pick (day2) for Meyers.
That makes no sense unless you extend Meyers and even then, there's no guarantee he adds to the chemistry of this WR room or works well with Maye in the way Diggs does.

I really would have liked to see the Patriots add some help either in the secondary, at edge, or even at WR. But we did not do any deals today.

I have a feeling the reason why is our top trade targets were on the Titans, Jets, and Dolphins. It seems the Titans leadership holds a grudge against sending help to Vrabel despite it being their own dumb decision to fire him.

Meanwhile the Jets and Dolphins are in division rivals so it would always be hard to get a trade done with them.

Still I would have liked to see us cast our net a little bit wider and look for more help. No improvements or help acquired this deadline, hopefully this does not bite us once we get deeper into the season or the playoffs.

I think Strunk has convinced herself that the Pats tampered with Vrabel. Problem is, the timelines don’t match.

You are assuming they could have gotten anyone worth getting for a 5th. Add to that, there seems to be a host of teams with NE on some sort of trade blacklist.
Most of the reasonable deals were about that cost.

Come on, are we really going with conspiracy theories?
But you are arguing they know they really suck and 7-2 isn’t real so they gave up.

Has the NFL decided where the 2027 draft will be held? If not, they'd be mad not to have it go back to NY or NJ for that year. It would be a very annoying watch though.

I think that the OL/DL regression vs improvement over the season this far may be the reason they stood pat.

Pressure rate is way down on D, way UP on O.

Perhaps the powers that be realize it’s a bit of a mirage to think the roster is really ready to compete in meaningful games and that protecting assets is wiser to keep building.

Onwenu, in particular has become a flat out liability.

He has to go after the season. Probably another 6 for 7 swap.
I think they have actually been competitive in some of those games. I suspect NE beats them by 3 scores now.
I can't imagine that was their thinking at all.
I would guess they tried to make some trades but weren't comfortable with there asking price, or were flat-out rebuffed (Jets).
There is zero chance they didn't try to improve the team because they thought they weren't ready to compete, zero.
Remember we are 7-2 with our current roster.

Not at all what I’m arguing. I’m arguing that none of the deals available to them made them better enough to bother with. And Giradi is ON RECORD saying that Strunk refuses to deal with NE. Add Jets, Dolphins to that (no smart person trades within the division) and who was left?

Meyers?

No thx.

Only guy I’d have liked was the Cincy LB who went to Dallas for a 5.

Show me teams with depth.
Agree. It doesn't exist. In fact, teams are already having a problem finding someone to be an adequate starter.

And yet there is still occasional talk of expansion. Like…there already aren’t enough good players, and the CBA prevents coaches from actually developing players because…when do they practice?

This week?
I heard them say that weeks ago.
If they said it again recently, neither one of therm should be allowed to talk football again......EVER.

Per Wikipedia, it's in DC.

Seemed to me the trade value was more in the sellers favors with these deals. Russini said Jets received calls from AFC East teams about potential deals but were reluctant to trade within the division. That's obviously Pats and Bills.

All said and done what changed with the trades today? It Increased odds of Patriots making playoffs because Jets are weaker and will be less competitive with loss of talent and remaining players unhappy. Dolphins a bit weaker. Makes those 3 wins easier.

Once in playoffs, what other AFC playoff outside of Colts really improved?

We are going to need a good luck charm that no major injuries the rest of the season. The depth is thin on this team especially defense.. Vrabel stood pat...

Don't forget we have a mini-bye after a gimme game vs. the Jete week 11 and the regular bye week 14. Those breaks might help on the injury front.
