NFL Free Agency Thread

Winning breeds a certain level of egoism wherein fans begin to believe that the Patriots are so invincible that they don't even need talented players to win, that they can just plug-and-play any warm body into a position, and the cheaper the better. Moreover, there's a tendency to assume that most of their draft picks are going to emerge as stars, rather than fade out of the league which is the statistical probability even for the most successful drafting teams. This tendency begins in March and won't end until training camp, and it happens every single year.

It's just fun to watch the ebb and flow of Free Agency. I agree on Draft choices and the assumption that your 7 picks will make a difference....not so. Upon average only 17% of every Draft class of each Team makes the NFL as Starter, Pro Bowl caliber of valued backup/ST in a three year period of evaluation. That means only one or two players per year, per Team by year three. The Draft is a crap shoot because of the human factor. Injuries also determine a percentage of Draft pick survivors which is luck. Over 33% of every NFL Team is comprised of UDFA, FA or Trades.

Build through the Draft sounds sexy. The Broncos won this year mainly of FA talent. Ware, Talib, Marshall, Vasquez, Daniels, Sanders, Ward, Anderson and even Manning plus many more. Take those players away and plug in Draft choices. Will anyone here state that the Broncos would have won the Super Bowl?

So why not hope your Team invests in at least three or four good Free Agents to their roster.

We will have to sign Andre Toast Johnson, to be honest, can't be worse than Lafell was last year. Anyway the mindset should be that he is coming (if they do make this signing) to be the 4th WR in the depth chart.
I hope not

What's the word on Reuben Randle? He's got the build you want but has really never looked the part in NY.

A lot of Giants fans I know really hated him because of how inconsistent he was.

They need fire or need to be fired?
Or both?

Not sure, but if the WR scouts need to (be) fired, then whoever sold Bill on Tavon Wilson as a second rounder needs to be executed. And publicly for that matter.

In 2014

"According to PFF, Sanu led the league in drops with 14 passes clanging off of his hands. In fact, 20% of all of the “catchable” passes thrown in his direction ended up as drops, and that’s a grotesque total that tied him with Tennessee Titans renowned drop-artist (and deep threat) Justin Hunter. Even Torrey Smith and Kelvin Benjamin, who are both better at stretching the field than Sanu, had lower drop rates than the Bengals third-year breakout man."

Agree with you about 2014, but:
But the receiver with the best hands in 2015 was Mohamed Sanu, who reeled in 33 of 49 passes without dropping a single ball. Sanu was somewhat known for his drops in 2014, so this was a big improvement for the fourth year player
Bengals drop rates in 2015

That was 2014. I wonder if LaFell and Sanu are the same but different. I'm not a big Sanu fan but he may be our best option eventually. Wallace can stretch the field so if he comes cheap.....

I have a feeling that was BB just saying Im going to prove im a scouting genius
The teams under us in that draft must of laughed and laughed then laughed some more

You do realize people had the same feelings about LaFell when the Pats signed him. He was not very good in Carolina.

Yes I know. It's just that I don't see the point in getting Sanu when I view his ceiling no higher than LaFell's + he will cost more than keeping LaFell would have + there's risk in not grasping the playbook/taking a while to build chemistry with Brady.

Yeah I'm aware. He bounced back in a contract year. But if we sign him, we have to wonder which Sanu will show up. Especially in a new, complicated offense where he might be thinking about his routes too much as he catches passes from a new QB.

Scares me to get less than Lafell and pay more for it

In on the top 2 WR to hit the market but yep typical Pats digging in the bargain bin

What I wouldnt give to talk to the wide receivers scouts and just understand what they are looking for and the value they place on it

Again, this is just magical thinking. Why would any team trade their elite, affordable wide receiver talent to the Patriots?
In the case of AZ it makes sense. They have a still viable Fitz, John Brown , Jaron Brown who could start on many Teams (???? 6'2 "and 205lbs). JJ Nelson and Jaxson Shipley who they are very high on.

He will cost $7.3 MM in s016 and like Jones a FA in 2017. I think Floyd will be cheaper to keep than Jones and we have some depth at DE and AZ has depth at WR.
