No doubt and from Josh's history with team his play calling thrives in the short to intermediate plays.
I think we saw in the Carolina game, that Josh’s system calls for big chunk plays, when they’re there. Not necessarily bombs. But we’ve been playing some decent defenses, so we’ve seen a lot of shorter gain games.

Would like to see some 40 and 50 yarders to Kyle Williams.
NFL games are like a symphony.

You score too quick and your defense is back on the field and gets burned out. The NE runs that achieve little gain have a purpose by slowing the game down and giving the opposing defense some wins. They also set up play action which McDaniels has been calling with success.

The Bombs to Williams and Diggs have there time and place. If the Pats are down by a couple of TDs with time waning, then by all means its bombs away since time is of the essence.

Ian's Stat sheets rival the Next Gen stuff... recommend you check them out... Some real good information here...

When you toggle the Receiving Direction Totals, you get a full break down of the passing attempts for all six classifications... Can do the whole season, various multiple games or a single game, all sortable by down and/or quarter...

I also verify and audit all of those numbers each week against the league's totals to make sure they match, both these and the rushing directional totals. Also, for anyone wondering, the league defines "Deep" totals of attempts of 15 yards or more, which is what differentiates "short" vs "deep." They also count touchdowns as first downs, which goes against that total.

I verify all the other situational totals against those from NFL.com (Red Zone) and CBS Sports (1st, 2nd, 3rd down, etc.).

There is a new version of this coming, I'm still tweaking some things. I've been using the new one on game days (which has drive breakdowns, which is where the throw-by-throw graphic I've been posting has come from) to test it, but it's still a work in progress.

Chart looks good as it is. Lots of green. Not much white. Very little red.

No sense making it worse by trying to force it farther downfield.

It ain’t broke. Stop trying to fix it.
Pats are 12th in ppg with 2 return TDs likely making that number look slightly better than it is. It's not broken but there's room for improvement.

I'm seeing the same thing. Even distribution.

And sure we'd all like a couple of deep bombs mixed in but it's not like we have a deep threat. Drake's using everything he has and spreading it around nicely.
We kindof DO have a deep threat and not just one, now with Diggs hopefully turning the corner on his rehab with his 33 yard catch last week

Boutte has shown he can't be taken for granted with a few 20 yard catches while averaging 16 ypc (despite being thought of as a deep threat, Diggs generally averages @ 13/14 ypc even in his heyday with the Bills.)

And such that he doesn't fumble, even Stevenson has shown that he's dangerous in that 15-25 yard range.

Unlike some seasons (even successful ones) when we've seen a lot less distribution, with that distribution a LOT closer to the LOS, this is a GREAT offense to really develop Maye and the Pats O to be completely unpredictable moving forward, both literally and figuratively.

This is great to see!

Obviously the left side behind the LOS favors the left because of having Campbell over there.
I'm counting 30 for 31 (97%) on the left half of the field, behind the LOS or within 5 yards beyond the LOS

Surprised they go so much to that side. Didn't they read the tape measurement on that one guy.

The short pass was Brady's bread and butter for a couple of years., his not throwing long doesn't bother me and seems to be a hallmark of a McDaniels offense..
Over time he will gain even more confidence and throw some passes long..

Brady threw plenty of deep balls when it was the right thing to do. Did we forget about 2007?
A couple a game is a lot. No team is out there throwing 10 deep balls a game.

They left at least 21 on the table vs pitt with turnovers.
Other than that and the 2nd half of game 1 the offense had consistently moved the ball and put up points.

The if ands and buts cuts both ways.

I personally feel ppg overstates how good our offense is, slightly. You think it understates it. Let's just take it as is.

12th overall means there's room for improvement. We should be aiming for a top 5 offense and a top 5 defense.

Im not playing if and but games im saying you have a 5 game sample and one is an anomoly. And I’m saying the offense has consistently been productive.

I think if you said at the beginning of the year we were aiming at a top 5 offense and by week 5 we’d be a top 12, you’d say sounds like we are on the way.
We are only 21 points behind #5.

I’m not sure where you got the idea anyone doesn’t want continued improvement

A couple a game is a lot. No team is out there throwing 10 deep balls a game.
Also remember when they referred to Brady's "dink and dunk" offense..

Something stood out reading Reiss' notes this morning:

10. Did you know? Since Week 2, Maye leads all NFL quarterbacks in completion percentage (77.6%) and is second in yards per attempt (9.1) behind the Seahawks' Sam Darnold (9.9).

When you compare this to his spray chart which seems a little light on deep bombs it tells a different story. And realistically being able to consistently throw in the 10-30 yard range is way more important than sprinkling in a few a deep bombs.
