Patriots Notes: Lewis, Jackson, Bennett, Butler

"The Patriots have made team-friendly extension offers to a number of their pending free agents — including Martellus Bennett, Malcolm Butler, Jamie Collins, Dont’a Hightower, and Logan Ryan — but so far, no player has been interested in putting pen to paper, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. Given that the salary cap continues to rise, each of these impending free agents figures to cash in the open market, and therefore have little incentive to agree to any offer New England puts on the table."

So, it's from Trollin, but it makes sense. Make of it what you will.

Message to Kraft:

Don't low ball Collins and Hightower. You paid Mayo who wasn't as good as either of them, you gave hernandez a record contact, mankins a record contract, and you gave McCourty a huge contract. PAY THEM!!

We need to take care of our own. OUR draft picks who become stars we need to retain them, its a big part of building our homegrown culture. We've paid our own guys in the past, do it again.

I don't think Mr macaroni and cheese is above just making something up that sounds good. Press release "We have made many team friendly, cheap, lowball offers." Stacy James.

Belichick decides who gets what, not Kraft.

Mr. Cardboard box and copier paper has little to do with team offers other than signing the checks. The Patriots are his hobby.

And his cash cow.. you could have an owner like Jerruh!!!

Collins & Hightower deserve their payday. Butler must be locked! He is our best cornerback atm on this team. I am iffy about Ryans with the emergence of Eric Rowe.
Bennett is a must, 2 TE takes so much pressure off Rob, you won't even believe it, the guy is playing with injuries and still a beast on the field. You don't come across many good Tight Ends these days that can block and catch the ball down the field.

Now as far as our O-Line goes, none of these guys deserve a huge payout because none of them are top notch, they are serviceable, but thats as far as I'd go with them. No world beaters...

I hope this offseason we can get a big center and that can help sore up the middle of the O-Line.

Ok so the Pats should make them the highest paid at their respective positions just because you think they deserve to get paid?

Deserve has nothing to do with it. Its all about market, demand, cap space, etc.

I believe Volin's piece. I'm sure they presented offers and they were rejected.

That's what negotiations are all about.

As long as the salary cap continues to rise I don't see why any marquee player should sign an extension before the market for their FA period is set. Unless it is extremely generous and sets the market.

People here ***** about BB/Kraft not holding out to players but you always need two to dance. BB's objective is to built a competitive squad and a players objective is to get the best contract they can. Sometimes the best contract means most money and sometimes other factors like respect, being in an ideal scheme ect. play a big role. But ultimately the goals of the GM and those of the pending FA are often clashing and make it pretty difficult to accomplish.

All that being said, it's not even November lets not panic just yet. I suppose both sides are feeling each other out and are getting an idea whether there is a even a reasonable chance or if they are just too far apart.

You are going to be disappointed. They will not be able to bring everyone back.

Some team out there will go nuts on a player.

I'm sure Squeeky and the Douche will ignore the win and talk about how the Pats are cheap for four hours lol. Luckily I won't find out.

I think we get to keep both Butler & Collins, both are hard workers...
Hightower is a 50/50, it depends on how much he wants...I hope he puts team ahead of greed.

So you think the team has prioritized Collins over High? Malcolm over High?

Do you think High is more greedy than Collins?

Take comfort from your own post. You just made it clear that the Patriots have a consistent history of re-signing top homegrown players to big contracts. So why would you think they'd start low-balling now?

They might not be able to keep everybody -- that's a lot of homegrown talent -- but it won't be because of being stingy.

Can't we all just agree that macaroni & cheese comes in a cardboard box?

So what is your negotiation style - start at the highest most point and work your way up? Of course they made low offers that is the art of the negotiation. Its like they all say "Its a business" in business if you want to be successful you negotiate the best deals.

Team starting point - low point
Player/Agent Starting Point - high point

then they end up with a deal somewhere in the middle of that range.

Furthermore it has been the history of this team under BB to have a budget number for every position and it is that budgetary discipline that has kept them great for 15+ yrs now......
