It seems that with the Jets trade with the Steelers, it means that my 5th round pick goes to the Steelers.

Already made that update thanks.

Edds is a steal this late IMO.

I just want to appologize for missing my last pick. I am having some issues with the sale of our house and it has taken over any free time I have had. I am really sorry, it has been a lot of fun and 'I hate not focusing on the draft. Stupid real world!

You don't need to apologise for dealing with more important stuff. We're now at the stage where a lot of people have dropped out and it's quite a bit more easy-going.

I hope the house sale goes OK..

I'm looking at some of the players going in the 5th with some surprise. Great picks, guys.

BTW, I'm happy to make the Lions' pick when it comes around (although feel free to go ahead if it's between 2am and 1pm ET during the week (when I'm at work) or from 7pm to 4am ET at the weekend.

As I stated ALL picks are now up for grabs so ANYbody can come post in place of another GM who's gone MIA. Currently the Packers selection is due up.

Taken so far...

Charles Brown OT
Ricky Sapp DE
Dominque Franks CB
Joe McKnight RB

Go ahead and make your selections patsfan-1982 I'm waiting on you. I already have Church posted now I'm waiting on your next selection. You have back to back picks how nice.

Howdy Pats fans. I am Zardnok, the "Expert" GM for the Patriots in Saints Report's version of your draft game the "Experts" Mock Draft. I thought I would get your thoughts on the picks I made for the Patriots. Being a newb poster here, I am unable to create my own thread and apparently insert links, but google "Saints Report Experts Mock" should bring it up. There is also a post-draft wrap up thread with a full draft strategy (post #59) if you are interested to see the thoughts put into each pick. It might also be interesting to compare your mock with the one done by our board.

This was the closest thread to what I was involved in, so I stuck my draft here. If this is inappropriate, feel free to delete it or perhaps move it to it's own thread.

1. Jared Odrick DT/DE Penn State- Big, Strong, Fast. My 5-Tech DE of the future.

2. Kareem Jackson CB Alabama- None of the other CBs I have drafted lately seem to work out, but this one will!

2. Brandon Lafell WR LSU- Steps right into the starting line-up next year when Randy Moss retires.

2. Koa Misi OLB Utah- Solid tackling pass-rush specialist with the quickness and agility to defend the pass.

4. Dennis Pitta TE BYU- Big-time steal here. Awesome receiving TE with the maturity to step right into starting line-up.

5. Patrick Angerer ILB Iowa- Super instinctive ILB with great agility, toughness, and productivity.

6. Colin Peek TE Alabama- Great blocking TE that does all the little things a TE should do. Traded two 7th rounders to move up.

6. Clay Harbor FB/TE Missouri State- Will play a hybrid FB/TE role moving around the formation.

6. Zoltan Mesko P Michigan- Muahahaha! Say it with me. Zol...Tan...Mes...Ko! My punter stinks and this guy doesn't.

7. Deji Karim RB/RS Southern Illinois- Compact runner with the quickness to break out and the power to stuff it inside.

7. Mike Kafka QB Northwestern- Smart and productive QB with great accuracy backs up Brady.

7. Callahan Bright DT Shaw College- This kid has turned his life around and just needs a shot. My NT of the future.

Hey, that's a great effort! A lot of those players are good matches for what we do, and have been discussed on this board. Excellent work.

I hope you enjoy our draft game--it's been a little uneven, but a lot of fun.

Oh, and . . .

:welcome:

My biggest issue is that you didn't address the interior of the O-line and other than LaFell, you didn't address the receiver situation.

Personally, I think that Zoltan is going to be a bust..

Also, don't think that a NT is in the cards because of Brace being behind Wilork.

Howdy neighbor, let's grade this thing:
1: A, fills a need, solid kid with prototypical size and strength for the position.
2a: C-, not much of a need, not a significant upgrade, it would have probably been best to trade down here.
2b: D-, inconsistent with questions about his route running, a possession receiver at best, not likely to be a replacement for Moss.
2c: A, a solid, all-around LB prospect who can rush the passer.
4: A+, a steal if he actually lasts that long.
5: C, I like this kid, but he's not a likely fit for a 3-4 ILB.
6a: D-, good blocker, a lot to like about him, but with Pitta NE would have 4 TE's on the roster, this makes 5.
6b: F, another kid I like, but he now becomes the 6th TE on the roster and the third from this draft, a bit of overkill I'd say.
6c: B, he's the top rated Punter per NFL Draft Scout, but I was unimpressed with his Senior Bowl. I'm not sure NE would draft him when there were other kids who did have good All-Star games.
7a: A+, excellent choice.
7b: B, prototypical size, good college production, decent arm, mentally tough, I'll take that for camp competition and a shot at the clipboard any day.
7c: U, I don't know much about him.

I have NE's needs ranked as WR, DE, OLB, TE, OL depth, DL depth, ILB/OLB depth, DB depth.

WR: 1 C- WR doesn't address the need for competition to fill the gaps left by Welker's injury and the failure to find a legitimate #3 WR last season. Additionally it does little for depth and competition overall. Not so good.

DE/DL: 1 A pick, good start, but in a draft class considered to be very deep for DL, the one small school/character rehab project at the last seems uncharacteristic for Coach Belichick and his love of the big guys. So so.

OLB: 1 A pick of a very nice utility LB who can probably learn to play all four positions. I love the kid, but NE needs more depth and competition here. Not so good.

TE: 3 Tight Ends? Serious overkill, you might have gotten away with 2, but 3 nearly fails this effort - at least you drafted my favorite choice for NE. :D

OL: Fail.

ILB: I'd really like to test drive Angerer in the 3-4 just to see if he's got some Zach Thomas slipperiness to slide around blockers and fill the hole, but he's a stretch for the 3-4 based on size. Not to good.

DB: Kareem looks like a good value for a team needing a CB in the second, but he's not elite enough to make it a good value for NE compared to kids available later. Not so good.

Stop by again if you plan to pick for the Patriots next year, we welcome the chance to visit with folks interested in football and we'll try to steer you a bit for your draft. Thanks for sharing!

I became a victim of my own board with the three TE picks. I had planned to take another WR in the later rounds, but had Peek and Harbor both rated as solid fourth rounders that fell. The morning of my Harbor pick, I was called in to work and submitted a draft board to the draft staff. Harbor was the top player remaining after Starks RB and the top WRs were taken. Looking back, I should have restacked the board I submitted slotting Harbor below the other WRs or OGs, but it is just hard to pass up a value pick when it exhibits.

Lafell is a definite potential bust, but he has had nobody competent throwing him the ball at LSU. I know he has talent, it will just take him some time to properly develop with a decent QB. Had I not taken Lafell here, I likely would have taken Misi and then grabbed Pitta, who I really like, with my final 2nd rounder. Considering I got both of the other target players, I am not too worried about Lafell.

Kareem Jackson was a value pick. I expect him to be a late first round selection and perform similar to the Saints own Tracy Porter, another 2nd rounder that has flourished. I place a high positional value in the draft on CB and when he was still there I pulled the trigger.

Angerer in the 5th was a pick I felt offered solid value. I liken him to former Saints inside backer Sam Mills as an undersized, but tenacious player that relies on superior instincts to make plays all over the field. I was not sure if he would transfer over to the Pats 3-4 scheme, but felt with his ability to drop into zone coverage he was worth a shot. It basically came down to him or Phillip Dillard and I felt Angerer was the better player with fewer concerns.

I must admit, I did not watch much film on punters, and by not much I mean none, but I like the Mesko pick as he was consensus #1 rated punter from every draft research source I used. In comparing the numbers for him, he was top-5 in hang-time and get-off and top-10 in average distance. His whacky left-footed spin is supposed to cause issues for returners, so I grabbed him.

My favorite picks were Odrick, Misi, Pitta, and Mesko, but then again I just like saying the name Zoltan Mesko! My least favorite picks were Lafell and probably Harbor who I feel will be an excellent player, just a bit of over-kill with the other two TEs.

Thanks for giving me your input. None of us "Experts" are much of Experts, but we do spend entirely too much time researching the draft. As Saints fans, we have traditionally preferred to spend more time looking ahead to the draft than back at our moribund seasons. Oh, and I am pretty much stuck with the Patriots for as long as I want to be their GM, so definitely expect me to come visit in 11 months!

 Zol - tan - mes - koooooooooo :D Okay, back to business. No worries, mock contests, like drafts, never flow the way you hope, but it was a game effort and I appreciate you dropping by to discuss it.

Jags had big trouble at WR last year, I think they will take a chance on this guy. I'd like to see the Patriots take a chance on him, we took a QB last year who turned out good.

Edwards blew everybody away at his pro day.

Hello Gm's I would like to know if anyone would like to pick for the Patriots? Just let me know and you can draft for them as well. BritPat had to drop out so thats why the Pats are available.
