Maye must play

Also Jones was always a pro ready high floor low ceiling guy with all the good and bad that comes with that. Wretched coaching turned him into something else. Either way I don't think he has the temperament to start, he's in a role more suited to him now.

Wretched coaching produced a weak arm that can't throw to the sidelines or a deep out? Pack the box, force all recievers to the sidelines, and watch Mac noodle due to a lack of athleticism. It is like you did not watch the opposing defensive shifts in Mac's first half of 2021 to the last half of 2021. At the beginning of 2022 when Mac's arm strength had not improved following a whole NFL off-season, he was cooked as a NFL started. All the excuses in the world, like wretched coaching, will not make Mac athletic enough to be a NFL QB.

What do you do to improve footwork and accuracy? Isn’t that done by having passing reps? How does he get better at that sitting on the bench?
Oh, nothing, you know you're right. Let's play him Game 1, no worries. Let's ****ing go! He's got arm strength and quickness and can learn to just run for his life. What's the worst that could happen, ahhhh, nothing, right? He's gotta be just as tough as (If I Only Had A Brain) Eli Manning and that guy survived. What was I thinking?

Regardless of last night and the next preseason game and practices, I believe Brisket will start the year.

No question his leash just got a little shorter...

All are things the former GM should have already known or anticipated before drafting him and yet he drafted him with a first round pick anyway.

The coaching was absolutely terrible the last few years and if he ever had a chance here it was squashed because of it.

He's on the right trajectory. I think there are benefits to letting him sit for the first four games (give or take), he's moving in the right direction and looks comfortable. That's about all I'm willing to judge at this point in the process.
At home at Miami and then Texas....

Mac also played well against back ups his rookie season in the pre season. Just like drake.. he was slated to sit behind cam.. I think this game makes the team really think on wich way they want to go with maye. Although not perfect he showed enough to believe he should be at least practicing with the first team offense.

I agree to a point. This game makes the team think, like you say, because:

1. Maye's performance was very encouraging. He has athleticism we have not seen in a LONG while. He does go through progresssions (he really does and it is not forced). Maye has a NFL QB's brain and athleticism.

2. Maye looks really raw. As Zo noted Maye shuffled in the pocket well in one of the early series, but as he played more he reverted to his 'duck and run' approach from his college days. Maye is trying but the improved footwork and mechanic training is not natural for him yet. And Maye looks like a young kid at 21 that needs to be in the weight room for a couple of years.

3. Recognizing 2 above, I would have no problem sitting Maye, but when you compare him to Brissett, Maye looks like ************ Superstar. Brissett is a lot worse than I remember. Brissett is abysmal. What were the Pats thinking signing Brissett? Holy Moly. If you are Mayo and Wolf how can you put Brissett on the field and say you are putting a product on the field people will watch? Mayo and Wolf will be ridiculed if they start Brissett.

You obviously have an agenda. Not worth having a discussion with a closed mind.

The GOAT said sitting his first year helped him a lot in his development. Not all QBs come out of college at the same level of their development. Maye is only 21 and has a lot to digest and learn. He’s no where near a finished product. Let’s see where the oline is at before we throw him to the wolves and let him acquire bad habits. Let Brissett start the year and reassess after 4 weeks or so.

He knew the OC's system and played well in 3 halfs of football last year. Plus he wasn't a lot of $ in the plan.

I know Brissett is going to start the season but I would like Maye to play the first half next week and Milton the second half. If I’m the coaching staff I would want to see him run with the starters in live game action.

Will Brissett really improve if he plays next week? He’s been with the starters all summer and looks awful.

I agree. I think the Brissett signing was about being a great mentor, a great person, and cost effective. I do not think it had much to do with being a NFL QB.

Now they have an issue because it is difficult to start Brissett. Brissett looked awful against the Eagles backups. The OL looked OK against the backups. When our OL looks good, you know the competition is weak. Thornton was open on that interception in the EZ (even though the broadcast tried to say no WRs were open - Thornton even had his arm up looking for the ball) and Brissett missed him. Brissett looked lost, really lost, against backups.

I'm not just talking about Bill. It was all of them. Totally dysfunctional. No surprise the QB flamed out.

He’s the only player who can put fannies in seats and Bob’s pro shop,

That's what I think might have him starting earlier than expected.

It was one preseason game. We need to stop it.

Even if Brissett is a disaster. You do not play Maye until he is ready. You don't risk screwing the kid up so we can win 7-8 games or possibly less.

Stop looking at everything about this year. This team is thinking beyond this year. I would rather go 0-17 and let Maye sit if he truly isn't ready than to rush him out there and have him develop bad habits that he can never break.

If he is ready and he is the best option, start him. If they believe it is better for his long term prospects to sit him even if it is only for a month, then sit him. The primary focus is trying to make Maye a franchise QB, not win games this year.
I absolutely agree with you. My only concern with Maye playing this season, is how horrible the OL (with the exception of Andrews who could be done after this season, Onwenu who should stay at RG, and Wallace who could be a long term starter at RT). Maye could be the next truly great Franchise QB and playing will aid in his growth to that goal. But I'm just concerned about his taking more hits than usual with the current OL (especially the left side of it).

Brissett was the most uninspiring free agent signing at the most critical position in all of sports. I would've preferred SB winning QB Joe Flacco. In any case, don't start Maye until we know the OL is competent. No need for him to get sacked repeatedly and then get a separated shoulder, broken collarbone or whatever. With time, those injuries pile up on a QB and their play drops off. Brady was great at avoiding those big hits. I want to see evidence that Maye knows how to do that too.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with you on Flacco.

Fix the OL starting five and get Maye in there.

For all the talk about Maye's footwork it looked perfect on that deep ball Baker dropped. Dropped back, sidestepped some pressure from his right, kept his base, then launched a 50 yard dime.

Where does this idea come that you learn more by watching someone else play QB than actually doing it yourself and taking all the first team reps lol?
