Matt Mulligan???

Fells and Ballard are both 'blocking' TEs and anyone who paid attention to the Jets a couple years ago (or the Rams last year) could tell you that Mulligan isn't really an NFL-caliber player, to put it kindly.

I agree, but perhaps money was one of the reasons why both Ballard & Fells were released
(the whole season's salary guaranteed thing). I would actually rather see another Move TE
added instead of another blocking TE anyway; I don't trust Sudfeld's ability to stay healthy.

One day we will all look back and say "Signing that Mulligan guy was the key to winning the SB championship".

Lol, but it could happen. Hopefully the Super Bowl championship part is true!

 I knew he was being sarcastic but I figured I'd roll with it in the hope of you posting this pretty cool picture

If Ballard were doing great at blocking, he'd still be here.

lol, mulligan.

why do we need a pass blocking only TE after we released Ballard. He seemed to be doing great at blocking...just couldn't move around

For months (even after Hernadez left), most of us have expected 4 TE's on the roster, one being a blocking TE. We agreed that Hooman's role was primarily as an H-back and that eh was being overpaid.

So, here we are. Hooman has reduced his salary. Devlin is gone. So, we have what we expected. We have Gronkowski, Sudfeld and one of Hooman and Fells. We always need a 4th, blocking TE. If Fells had decreased his salary as Hooman did, maybe he would still be here. Ballard gave up lame. If Belichick had any faith in him at all, he would be here.

So, we STILL needed a blocking TE. The need didn't go away. The alternative is to use a lineman.

Folks are whining that Mulligan isn't much of a receiving threat. Well, I think Hooman and Fells cauaght about 7 catches between them last year. Mulligan isn't here to be a receiving threat. If he is active, and if he is called upon, he will be asked to be a blocker.

BOTTOM LINE
We needed a blocking TE. We are trying one out. Maybe he's be so bad that we sllok elsewhere next week, or even in a couple of days. I don't understand why this signing doesn't make sense.

And yes, Belichick is still looking for players at other positions.

I agree with Deus, Mulligan sucks.

I'd rather sign Reid Fragel, OT - Ohio State from the Bengals practice squad.

Reid Fragel, OT, Ohio State, NFL Draft - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Fragel signed with Ohio State as a highly touted tight end but grew out of the position, emerging as an honorable mention All-Big Ten right tackle for the Buckeyes as a senior.

At 280 pounds Fragel served as Ohio State's backup tight end over his sophomore and junior seasons, catching a combined 14 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown while also playing special teams.

Urban Meyer and his staff convinced Fragel to make the transition to offensive tackle and he quickly added 20 pounds of muscle to his frame. It is precisely this ability to add weight that has scouts intrigued, as he didn't appear to lose any quickness and has the frame to add another 20 pounds.

I'm guessing that whole "moving around" part of the skill set can be important from time to time

Are we going to really have a thread biatching about a bottom of the roster guy. He is most likely a very short term fix in the running game as a blocker at most.
isn't that what we do around here?

I would have to agree with those who feel this is an odd choice. I would have thought that they would have brought back Fells if they wanted another TE, now that his contract wouldn't be an issue after passing through waivers.

For a TE Mulligan is strictly a blocker. In the past the Pats didn't hesitate to throw an OT out there in that position. (see Nate Solder.....the early years). So in the end, this is certainly a curious signing, but not very impactful either way, IMHO. But I doubt he survives to week 3

Apparently. The guy may never be on the active game day roster. Yet, we are already on page 4 of this thread.

I think at most he is here to be a blocking TE until they can re-sign Fells next week. Odds are very good that if he is on the roster after next week that he rarely if ever gets activated.

My guess is Fells will be re-signed next week after his contract would not be guaranteed. That is typically what the Pats do.

Don't think it's as much about *****ing as recognizing the good opportunity for a little humor with that kind of name.

So BB is just screwing with Patsfans posters again!

Focus on Buffalo, Bill! Stop the clever mind games against internet fan boys!

Really? This guy?

I hope, he´s a placeholder.
This guy is a blocking TE, not one of the good sort. Give me Fells back.
If Mulligan starts, i can see a lot of flags for holding are incoming.
