Malcolm Butler Says Super Bowl Benching Documentary/Book Coming

I think we're in for a big let down. If it was so bad and the team screwed him, he wouldn't have re-signed with the Pats last offseason.

The game plan was straight up amateur hour. The Eagles told reporters during the week they were going to look for wherever Rowe was lined up as he graded out as one of the worst CB's in the NFL that year...So Bill/Patricia puts him on their best WR and got roasted early.

Keeping Richards and Badmostly out there was insane as well.

Sounds a lot like Arrington on Matthews in SB49.

This is interesting:

Definitely curious to potentially finally hear what happened, if he's actually willing to truly tell everybody what the full story is.

I received an advance copy of the book, the story appears on page 283.

”For years, people have been asking me why I didn’t play in Super Bowl 52. Here’s the story. Just before the national anthem, Coach approached me and said, ’Malcolm, you’re not playing tonight.‘ I said, ’Ok, coach.’ We went on to lose the game 41-33. That offseason I was a free agent and signed with the Tennessee Titans.”

Thought I heard something about how he technically had a concussion that hadn't been reported, and couldn't play, but they still wanted to get him 1 snap to collect some kind of bonus or incentive.
Wow. That scenario never crossed my mind.

If true, that would explain a ****load.

That seems oddly specific. Like when you're in high school and have to write a report but the teachers tells you not to pick something either too broad or too specific.

There is nothing for MB to be guilty about.

He said he was sick all week and wasn't 100% locked in and focused. I believe him. Probably had the flu/virus which can leave you feeling like **** for a week. The secondary knew he wasn't going to start and it was too late to deactivate him.

The team will not comment on a player's medical situation nor will they give the Iggles any helpful info re: Malcom's health.

If there was a fight w/ BB Jr or Fat Matt or MB diva'd SB week BB would excommunicate him and MB wouldn't have signed a contract last spring.

I truly believe that is all there is to it. If there was more to it we'd know about it by now.

All MB is trying to do is sell books and distro rights to his documentary.
The idea that Butler was benched for anything other than not being ready to play has been a fiction created on this board, which has taken on a life of it’s own.

Im more interested in one of the following books:

The Jake Bequette Chronicles: The Story Behind the Pictures that Saved My Job

Or

James Ferentz: Nepotism Lives

I'd love it if that were the reason. But that entire situation certainly felt like it went beyond something so simple, so it remains a question that I think most of us are still curious about. Him crying at the start of the game tells me there's more to it. I'd honestly prefer the concussion/health issue that @A Defiant Goose mentioned, which would at least put it to bed and make it easier to accept.

i am completely 100% of the opposite mind.

i think Butler did something he shouldn't have done, and got notified of the hook before the game. He only dressed because there was no other option / last resort due to injuries type scenario. The only thing BB screwed up on was not deactivating him prior to the game to squelch any controversies surrounding the inevitable "why didn't he play" questions
I saw it as his role was going to be diminished. The game plan was the infamous 4 safety defense so only 2 corners were going to play and cb3 would barely take the field. Then Butler melted down during pregame and they just felt he wasn’t mentally ready to play.
He wasn’t deactivated because they were short corners. I have absolutely no question that decision fit in with the way belichick runs his team. I think at some point getting him out there for a few snaps to see how it went would have been smart, but it’s hard to say benching a guy because he isn’t prepared to play is something to reconsider because he wasn’t any more ready to play later in the game.

And it would pretty much exonerate the Pats... other than not listing him on the injury report, which then get them in trouble. Eff it.

And that would explain neither side talking about it, given the potential repercussions by the league.

We know, because Butler admitted it, that he was late arriving, sick and not dialed in to the game plan and struggling in practice.
Why would there need to be more.
We know because other players have said, they practiced all week with the guys who played.
As for the crying I think he just melted down when it hit him he wasn’t going to play.

We will never get a confirmation from the Patriots on why he was held out. So this book is essentially hearsay and nothing but a curiosity. Now if he reveals that he did something incredibly stupid and it was his fault....then I would be inclined to believe him.
How could it be hearsay when he was a principal. We'll get to hear his version of what he did and what he was told. That's not hearsay.

And my point was the fighting with coaches or being punished for talking back garbage that has been theirs around for years in this site has no basis at all behind it. It’s been entirely made up.

I don’t think he meant hearsay, I think he meant only one side of the story.

I don't care what he did. He should have played.

Because so many other players said they had no idea until kickoff he wasn't playing. Again, it was just a bizarre situation and the reasons you mentioned certainly weren't enough to bench him the entire game, save for special teams, especially given how the game was going.

That wasn't invented here, that was discussed due to various reports. People here didn't sit here creating stuff, we all just reacted to what was reported. Whether we agree on it is another story, but no one here started those rumors.
