First you claim that Mac Jones is in a much more complicated and harder offense to run than Bailey Zappe. For weeks we heard all about why Zappe was moving the offense and winning and why poor Mac was set up to fail. Zappes offense was so much easier than Jones. Verdict - Patricia's fault.
And, now your claim is that Mac Jones is in an offense that is too simple and basic. Verdict - Patricia's fault.
The Mac offense is an offense like Alabama where you're surrounded by 1st round draft picks. If somebody can figure out how to pay these people the Pats are back baby!!!!
Fine. Now explain to us what happened to Jones "last season" after the bye with McDaniels & a Top 10 offense, when he went 1-4 with a 60.5% comp, 8 TDs/7 INTs & a 80.1 rating ( he has an 87 rating this season). Is this what you consider a top 10 QB?The Patriots offense of last year would be fine for Jones if they gave him an Edelman/Welker type slot/inside slant guy and true third down receiving back. With all their flaws, the Pats were a top 10 offense last year. They were sixth in the league in points. Don't tell me that Jones isn't capable of running an NFL offense. He may never be a top 5 QB. But he was on his way to potentially being a top 10 QB after last year.
Ok I stopped reading right there really.First, I never said the offense was too complicated or hard for Zappe. Not once. I said the Patricia retooled the offense for Zappe to put him in a position to win. A lot of play action with him under center (which they still don't do enough of with Jones). A run first offense (Patricia has completely abandoned the run in recent weeks). Stuff like that. It wasn't that the offense itself was too hard.
Second, the offense is too predictable. And Warner showed in his video that it isn't so much that offense is too simplistic, but more about the way Patricia designs plays with the simplicity. Warner pointed out how Patricia is running receiver routes that are too close together without any spacing which makes it easier for the defense to cover the receivers and take away options. Also the plays as designed are developing fast enough for the QB. Players are not looking back for the ball even when they have a hot route. This all back to coaching.
Third, you and other keep pointing back to the Warner video as some kind of proof that the offense is fine and it is Jones who just can't run it. You guys even point to plays where he completes a 20 yard pass, but Warner feels he did a few things wrong as if it is proof. But the overall theme of the Warner video is there something systematically wrong with Patriots offense. It isn't the concept. As he says it is the details. And guess what, this flawed offense can still work against bad defenses like the Lions, Browns, and Vikings. It doesn't work against the good defenses in the league.
Mac Jones came into the league as Tom Brady Lite. No, he isn't remotely in the same stratosphere as Brady, but Jones and Brady have a lot of similar skill sets. The Patriots offense of last year would be fine for Jones if they gave him an Edelman/Welker type slot/inside slant guy and true third down receiving back. With all their flaws, the Pats were a top 10 offense last year. They were sixth in the league in points. Don't tell me that Jones isn't capable of running an NFL offense. He may never be a top 5 QB. But he was on his way to potentially being a top 10 QB after last year.

There was no Patricia, no Judge, no simplified offense, no sh*t OL, no Zappe.
I'll wait to hear what excuse you come up with.
Ok I stopped reading right there really.
Weakness is spot on the money how was Mac Jones even a First Rounder?? Seems like BB Reached here for a choir boy and not a football player.A lot of talk about this ....
"And Warner said that simplifying the offense negatively affects how Jones processes information during a play."
As well as about Mac's anticipation.
These were talked about predraft but also a lot last offseason as one of the three things I wanted to see improvement on this year, his second year (post snap processing) I keep bringing this up, the predraft stuff bc it's a good baseline. Decent measuring stick when they hit the pros.
I tried to look up a few old post I had on Mac but had no luck. This popped up though from last January.
...
"The people that don't think he has to improve his velocity are my favorite rn. Clearly lacking and if he wasn't a Pat it would talked about more. As someone who thought he could improve his mechanics going back to last year, this is key. Release should / could improve as well.
Post snap processing, body / conditioning, footwork / mechanics is the list for me. Luckily all three could improve. I heard Aaron Rodgers and other great players from different sports talk about picking one thing and trying to master it in the off-season. He'll naturally be studying and working out so if he can make strides in his footwork, release point and other things we could see a big difference."
...
Mac does have a tough time processing information post snap, off of coverage disguise, at times off his first read. You combine that with a bad OL and his ability to process and throw with anticipation will definitely be effected. Thats why a top tier OL is so important for him. More than his targets although they need an upgrade as well. He has really good anticipation but needs a superior line to help with that. Really good anticipation on deep stuff, at least coming out but again everything was from a clean pocket. When it's not clean, he has to think, deal with quick/immediate pressure his decision making suffers.
I know Waldman noted this as well. He's one of 3-4 people I actually pay attention to. We disagreed and agreed in different areas but I think very highly of Matt.
Both of us talked about his post/snap processing a lot though and thought it could improve. We disagreed on how he handled pressure. Matt thought more highly of him in that area than I did. I believe he had him in the "committee" category in terms of decision making which is basically average and star caliber when it came to dealing with pressure.
I'm at work and dont have a ton of time but this talk of "anticipation" "decision making" "post snap processing" made me go back and take a look at some Jones reports.
Waldman might be my favorite.
Lance is great too.
Mentioned this a few times but draft geeks nailed the Mac Jones eval so far. We get our fair share wrong but almost word for word these ring true.
I still think Mac could be a good QB but he needs a ton of help around him. That sounds obvious but it gets very tough when you factor in the limited mobility, problems with pressure/second level pressure, lack of big arm and quick processing.
Very frustrating year. This is multiple years since Brady that we're either going through the motions or just punting. I expect big changes this or next offseason.
I've pointed this out as well and it complicates blaming Patricia. From week 13 of last season to week 13 of this season (15 games) Mac has 15 TDs, 14 INTs and 210 Y/G. That's nearly a full season's worth of subpar play. So Mac's game starting to decline even last season with McDaniels. Still, I don't think Patricia has done anything to get Mac back on track. It's evident now that making Patricia the OC of a new offense was a mistake. The question is how much of that has contributed to Mac's continued subpar play? And how does it get fixed? Replacing Patricia is an option but even after that questions about Mac will remain.Fine. Now explain to us what happened to Jones "last season" after the bye with McDaniels & a Top 10 offense, when he went 1-4 with a 60.5% comp, 8 TDs/7 INTs & a 80.1 rating ( he has an 87 rating this season). You forgot to mention the Bucs. The only o-lineman they have starting right now from last season is Donovan Smith (who sucks). However, the Pats aren't the only team having OL issues this season. The LA Rams probably have the worse OL in the NFL, yet we saw last night how Baker, who was constantly under pressure, was able to make throws to covered receivers. Not dump offs but deep throws. This is a dude that had almost no familiarity with the Rams playbook, yet was clutch when it mattered. There isn't a single person that thinks Baker is a Top 10 QB, but he's got good instincts, a strong arm, and good pocket movement. The Jets have an atrocious OL due to injuries, yet Mike White has averaged 342 ypg with a so so rating of 89.5
The Bills OL is nothing special, we know how Allen handles it. Saints OL is subpar, yet Red Rifle is making plays. Chargers OL is below average, we know what Herbert can do (#4 in yards). Dolphins OL is below average, though 100x better than last season (dead last). Tua is having a career year. Seattle has two rookie tackles and are an average OL. Geno is having a career year. Bengals OL, lol. Burrow is #2 in yards with a 103.7 rating. BTW Pats OL is probably better than all of the above.
I wasn't about to include the GOAT, no need. There are a dozen QBs facing the same or worse OL play, some elite others not so much, but all playing better than our 1st rounder. You forgot to mention the Bucs. The only o-lineman they have starting right now from last season is Donovan Smith (who sucks).
Let's not forget, Mac was pretty unanimously anointed the most NFL ready QB in the draft. According to what Rob0 posted above, he should've gone #3, if not the best quarterback in this class. So there shouldn't be any excuses for his poor play. Mac wasn't considered a "project" like Allen. Since last season's bye, he's been one of the worse QBs in the league. What happened? Were they wrong about his ceiling? I don't know but he better start showing up these last 5 games. He needs to show why he was considered the best quarterback in this class. No excuses.
Are you talking about Matt Waldman? The same guy who wrote this before the 2021 draft?
Another polarizing player at the top of his class is Mac Jones. Mark Schofield has Jones as his fifth-ranked quarterback and I have him third on my board. Both of us have him graded as a player capable of starting in the NFL, but there was a point that I had Jones as my No.1 quarterback after two of his first three rounds of film study.
Here’s what we discussed during this hour-long show that should help viewers getter a better feel for this rookie prospect who could go as high as third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft:
Most evaluators underrated quarterbacks like Jones because they lack the elite arm talent and physical upside that’s easier to project. Jones has more than enough arm strength for the league but it’s far more difficult to project whether his conceptual acumen is at its ceiling because he’s already showing a lot in this area.
- Jones consistently delivers passes with excellent placement against tight coverage despite the narrative that he rarely has to target tight coverage.
- Jones’ pocket presence might be the best of the quarterbacks in this class.
- He understands how to preempt pressure with his movement.
- He maneuvers with the pocket with timeliness and efficiency.
- He will take big hits to deliver an accurate throw.
- Jones is more creative and quicker to adapt to unexpected events than he might be characterized.
- Jones moves a lot like Manning has an aggressive demeanor as a field general.
- He displays the hips and footwork to make accurate throws of third and fourth reads at the opposite side of the field.
- Jones’ anticipation and placement make him the most dangerous red-zone thrower of this class.
- His play-action and drop game make him an underrated player with misdirection concepts that mesh well with Kyle Shanahan’s schemes even if he’s not the most mobile passer.
- He can work outside the pocket and keep his eyes downfield.
I don’t think Jones has reached his ceiling. In fact, I wonder if he isn’t the best quarterback in this class. At the very least, I think he’s closer than most think.
The Rookie Scouting Portfolio (RSP)Matt Waldman’s RSP Film Room: QB Mac Jones (Alabama) with Mark Schofield
Mark Schofield and Matt Waldman examine several plays from Mac Jones’ portfolio of work and begin to wonder if the more apt comparison for Jones isn’t Peyton Manning. Another polarizing…mattwaldmanrsp.com
Doesn't sound like Waldman was down on Mac Jones coming out of college.
