Logan Ryan..

Guys saying Ryan is a solid #2 or a slot haven't watched a whole lot of games this year.

Some secondaries this year would make our 2011 CBs cringe. Ryan will get to start somewhere in the league.

Are you talking about fuller? His contract's very friendly and the relationship has gone sour.
Yes. The only way they're bringing him in is if they have zero plans for Jones, or any other young CB on the roster, in that rotation. I doubt Fuller would come up in any sort of trade talks.

I saw all the games. Ryan was at his best while lined up at nickel. The secondary, at its best, had Rowe and Butler outside and Ryan in the slot.

This only matters if NE's offer is in the neighborhood of what other teams will offer. But since I believe there will be teams with really high offers, he's gone IMO.

Obviously we have to pay Butler, he's a top 5 cb.

Ryan is good physical cb who fits our system well. I don't think he has the quickness to be a #1, but is an excellent #2 anywhere.

If the money is close, i would take the Pats offer since the grass isn't always greener on the other side and to play with Butler and DcM is a luxury. If someone blows him away with cash than he has to take it

I think ryan will be gone. I hope they find someone in free agency. Last thing i want is a shaky secondary when our pass rush can be iffy when flowers's not getting pressure.

Someone said alterraun verner. Any thoughts on him? Not in love with his speed. Prefer someone taller. I know shields has head issues but he can be someone cheap and worth the risk.

An instagram post doesn't mean much but it's certainly better than the news coming out of HT or Bennett's camps. That said, if they do reach an agreement with Ryan I think they almost have to offer Butler a payday, and it's gotta be more.

Verner is terrible in man coverage.

Reasons I think Ryan might come back:

1. We have to pay someone. There is $60m in cap room. Bennett and Sheard are likely gone. Hightower likely only knocks 12m off the cap. Even if we pay Butler there is probably $45m left - especially kid Amendola restructures.

2. Safer to pay your own players than give big contracts to free agents. We know what Ryan is, and he is the classic Patriot. Might not be the most talented, but fits in the locker room and by all accounts is a perfect team mate and student of the game.

3. Paying Ryan shouldn't upset the locker room. We can pay him 8m a year and Butler will get a bigger contract when he signs (12m?). This preserves the pecking order at CB. Unlike at TE or S where paying Bennett or Harmon will likely see them jump over better players (and starters) in Gronk and Chung who already have long term deals.

4. I think he wants to be here and might give up a few extra million on the open market to come back

give him 4/35..8 signing bonus, 18 guaranteed. that guarantee is a top 12 guarantee for CB currently. even with some other signings should be a top 15
Logan Ryan? Top 12-15 corner? Seriously?

I agree, I think some people have unrealistic expectations for certain positions and/or players
Especially corners, LTs and pass rushers.

Contracts are cyclical. Ryan isn't a top 15 cornerback but you have to pay him as such for now. A year or two from now he will be paid like the number 30 corner.

A few years ago we wouldn't pay Talib, and he received a 6 year $57m (28 guaranteed) contract from Denver. Now that deals looks pretty good because of the cap increases.

Perhaps not adopting this attitude is why the patriots have been so successful.

Paying a guy like a top 15 player when he is a mid level cb2 because by in 2 years he will only be paid like the best #2 in the game and by the time his skills deteriorate he will be paid like what he is today may be what other teams do but not bill belichick.

That deal still looks awful because if the age of the player.
Players decline. If you think their value in 3 years will be a bargain based on what they are today you overlay for 3 years then realize the player isn't what he used to be.
