I had my first pizza almost 60 years ago at Pizza Regina's on Thatcher St. in the N.End. The plate sized pie was $.50. The large was $1 When I was in college I would take friends down there. Some of these suburban rich kids were afraid to get out of the car. The same waitresses were still there 15 years later and STILL wouldn't allow me to get a beer.

It was great thin crust pizza cooked in the same brick oven that they had when they opened the place in the 1930's. I've never tasted better. There are other Pizza Regina's around now, and while they are good, they aren't the same. You can't duplicate that oven.

Now the small cheese is over $8, but the oven is still there. So if you are ever down there, I'd highly recommend it. Not too far from Boston Garden. If you like that kind of pizza, I was surprised to find that California Pizza came pretty close. Of the big chains Pappa Gino's is the best. I have a Domino's up the street, and their pan pizza, and thin crust pizza are OK if you order them with extra sauce.

As to the OP, I think its a great ad, and if one was near me, I'd get one just because of the ad. Good for Pappa Ginos. BTW- I've only had one Pappa John's pizza, and I've never gone back.

Probably can't go wrong with a slice from anywhere in the North End. I would like to try that place, but I doubt I will because the best Pizza I've ever eaten is from Ernesto's in the North End. So I probably will end up going to Ernesto's at the last second. We usually make sure we visit Boston every time we go home to visit, once a year or so, and I make sure we get a couple of pies fromel Ernesto's. The wife thinks I like to reminisce about living their as a kid, but its really for the pizza. Living in VA I crave real pizza. We have place that is decent but everything else is the chains.

I know its not the North End, but they opened up a Pizzeria Regina over at Station Landing in Medford by Wellington station. It's fantastic! I know its not the North End feel, but the parking situation is 10x better!

Hey peeps. Just some pizza tips.

The best pizza in the boston area that I've eaten is from Emma's pizza in Kendall sq, Cambridge. Get the #1. Caramalized onions and red peppers.

For chains, I prefer Uppercrust pizza.

Never had Emma's but did you spend a lot of time in Cambridge? I'm originally from East Cambridge, the best pizza ever was Arams over on Cambridge st by the court house. How would you compare the two?

I used to live on 7th and thorndike for a year and walked to the lechmere stop a lot. Had a couple of pizzas at arams. I'd say they are totally different. Aram is more the "regular" kinda of pizza. It's good for the quick bite when I'm passing by and hungry. But Emma is thin crispy and a more modern take on pizza. For me, Emma all the time every time. They're really small and over in demand so service gets overwhelmed but the taste. Omg!

Give me a Costco pie any day

I wonder if Papa John's will do poor business this weekend because of their pitchman.

By the way, I got a free sausage pizza from Papa John's last year (first time from them). It sucked.

Terrible pizza!

Lynwood Pizza in Randolph, Mass.

The servers are old, rude, and mean. The owner is a stupid, old, cheap prick. My uncle worked there for years when he was a kid and the guy refused to give him even a 5 cent raise. They actually close for two weeks in August rather than allowing anyone to go on vacation. They have no ATM, cash only. They don't accept any IDs that are not Mass. IDs, including passports or military IDs. The only reason I've ever gotten a beer there is because they know my Dad and they give him however many beers he asks for. My brother once threw up outside when we were kids trying to eat an entire pizza.

But my God, that is some good pizza. Amazing.

Lynwood's pizza used to be excellent, but they've gotten super greasy over the last several years. If you like that style of pizza there is Spencers pizza in Abington and Cape Cod Cafe in Brockton are both very good. Spencers is usually excellent but is occasionally too greasy or burnt. Cape Cod Cafe is almost always great, but it's in a pretty dangerous area.

Everyone knows the rules, just one bite.

I never tried Pizza back east. I am open to trying any pizza. The Pizza back east may possibly taste better than the chain Pizza places like Pizza Hut, Papa John's Domino's etc. However, I personally still think Papa John's and Domino's taste good.

My advice, from a displaced MA dude living in the Southwest, who once lived in New Haven, CT (home of Pepe's Pizza and Modern Apizza - often discussed as best in the U.S. and there is merit to the claims), is to find a local, non-chain store owned by someone from Chicago or NY. Chain stores may make decent, edible pizza, but they are not even close to the non-franchise offerings.

I went to Papa Gino's around Christmas with my Dad, because they never feel like the large chains to me and the pizza has been decent (ups and downs over the years, but generally pretty good). All the staff were wearing Pats shirts with some jab at Welker on the back (ie., "They may have skiing and altitude, but they don't have our pizza.").

.

Please tell me there was an only-funny-years-later aftermath, maybe a curse-laden invitation never to return?

From my experiences of traveling and always trying pizza, Buffalo, NY has the best pizza on the planet.

No you wouldn't, especially living in NJ.

I'm sorry? Because I'm not in NE I'm not allowed to want pizza that celebrates the team I root for? WTF? And I wasn't born in NJ, anyway, if you're trying to lump me with Giants/Jets fans. I was a military brat, so I didn't have a decision on where I got to live.

Christiancat, I weep for you. I lived in California for five years, and during that time I never ate anything that I could in good conscience call pizza. Even high-priced "gourmet" pizza places just produced utterly tasteless garbage with weird fancy toppings. Cajun crawfish pizza, *shudder*.

As for Domino's...well, imagine that your entire exposure to seafood was a can of Bumblebee's Chunk Light Tuna. (Papa John's might be closer to Fancy Feast Tuna Entree.)

For MA folks, Papa Gino's will never compare to your favorite local joint (Joe Pizza in Medford for me), but it's totally acceptable when you need a lot of cheap pizza for a crowd.

There's been a Papa Gino's in town my whole life and I don't think I've tried it once. Nobody ever talks about it, it's always either a local place or Domino's. I personally like Domino's and found that the local place I used to like isn't as good as I remembered after a few months away from home, but maybe someday I'll give Papa Gino's a try.

Domino's may be processed and terrible for you but I think there's something to be said for that. Same goes for Papa John's, which would be my go-to if there were one closer.

For thin crust Papa Ginos is better than Pizza Hut IMO. For some good thin crust I like Bianchi's(revere beach) or the Brown Jug(chelsea).

I only have good pizza a couple times a year when visiting the Fam back east...

Oh yeah, screw Papa Johns...

Bianchi's is definitely one of the best. If I time it right and traffic isn't outrageous, I can bring theirs home and it will still be hot.

I'd also recommend Ernesto's on Salem St in the North End.

My wife thinks that Papa Gino's is a yum yum.

That rude and mean attitude sounds very similar to Santarpio's in East Boston. It never worked for me. If they want my business I'd prefer they at least act like they care. There are too many places where I can get a decent pizza and not have to deal with rude servers.

I see there's another Ernesto's fan here. I should have read on before I posted my recommendation.

The best part about the North End is that if you can go there on a weekday and park 2 hours for free right on Hanover St, as long as it's between the hours of noon and 5 PM. I'm in there at least twice a month.

Wow chill out buddy. You read waaay to far into that. ************, I meant you wouldn't want it because it sucks! And I imagine pizza in NJ is better than average.
