Aside from what happens - most of the time - between the white lines, the NFL is a sick joke, which, I increasingly begin to think, might be a pretty apt description of our fandom as well. The level of compensation for knuckledraggers whose work is to collide with one another calls into question our priorities. The owners are driven entirely by avarice. The game is destructive of human health to a point where allowing your kid to play it might just be deeply irresponsible.. The old notion that "sports builds character" is now an asinine delusion. rendering void any justification for its inclusion in our educational programs. Following the NFL has become very much a guilty pleasure for me, and each year in the off-season I wonder whether I should continue to care about this largely ugly and likely decadent spectacle.
