Joe Milton is a "better option" than any QB available in this year's NFL Draft.

Belichick boxed himself into a corner.

That said, he also got the 49ers to eat Brian Hoyer's contract (they paid him ~$10M for 8 weeks) and release him outright rather than including him in the deal, which would've cost the Patriots a comp pick.
Jimmy G sat on the trading block for months after the 2016 season ended and before free agency for 2017 began. The Patriots announced to the world he was available for trade and the starting point was a first round pick. Nobody was willing to pony up that pick, the best offer they supposedly received was a 2nd round pick.

Jimmy had a chance to play 4 games when Tom got suspended and jack up his value but he started two games and got hurt... he sat even though he supposedly was healthy enough to play. Moreover the Browns who had two first round picks were told by Jimmy's agent Don Yee that even if they traded for him Jimmy wouldn't sign a new contract there.

So with the draft right around the corner in 2017 the Patriots took Jimmy off the market and said they would hold onto him entering the season because nobody offered them the first round pick they were asking for. If they could get a 2nd for him in the offseason, they could get that at the trade deadline or maybe more from a desperate team.

Everybody thought Matt Cassel would get a first round pick in return, the market determined he was worth a 2nd and fans were annoyed. You can't force other people to buy what you're selling, if people won't buy... you lower your price. The market determined Jimmy was worth a 2nd round pick. The market sets the price, not BB, not the fans.

Keep hanging out drinking with Tom, at least you can have fun.

it does unless you’re bidding against yourself. See Sanu, Mohamed.

The Sanu trade was dumb, a big overpay, but they also lost AB because he was a moron, Brady was pouting and they were a legitimate playoff contender when healthy.

It was a desperate move to keep Tom happy and win a ring. In hindsight BB never should have made the trade, and Brady should have stopped his whining and thrown to Jakobi Meyers instead of black balling him.

Water so far under the bridge it seems like whining to bring it up at this point.

Or, at least, Belichick shouldn't have used him as a punt returner, which is where he got injured.

I have no idea how much of this is true and how much of it is just smoke; I've also seen stories from around that time claiming, for example, that the 49ers made two offers for Garoppolo in the spring, and Belichick shot them down. And Belichick himself said he had no appetite for trading Garoppolo in the spring.

Remember when we had a sticky about milton... but instead(no offense to op) we had... why is this even a sticky?

Now this is a big subject again.

I wrote long winded posts about his time at tn... i hate that you guys might never get to see him actually play in a pats uniform against a real team.

Keep him as a back up... for the love of God he's cheap... and qbs get hurt.

You should probably be more aware of when players were drafted before attempting to "fix" other peoples' posts.

Your right, 7th. Close enough.

Then take it up with Bill cause he was on the exact same page as Brady at the time on who should get the ball.

This guy doesnt seem to have actual insider knowledge

Also, 3rd round pick for Milton and thank you for the memeories
And passing on Milton in the draft until the Patriots picked him up in the 6th round is a funny way for teams to show they “believe Milton has the potential to be a superstar QB1 in this league”

They had a future All Pro punt returner in Gunner but they benched him so they could fit Sanu on the roster.

Brady shouldn't have been a diva, and BB shouldn't have kowtowed to the whining.

Plenty of blame to go around.

Everybody here was discussing the Patriots trading JimmyG starting on December 28th in 2016 because Adam Schefter, Mike Lombardi and Tom Curran all announced that the Patriots were putting JimmyG on the trading block and that a first and a fourth round picks was the starting bid they were asking for.

“The next quarterback that’ll be the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback perhaps is Jimmy Garoppolo in New England,” Lombardi said, via the Akron Beacon Journal. “I think Cleveland understands, [coach] Hue Jackson specifically understands he needs a quarterback. I think they’ll be very aggressive. I think Jimmy Garoppolo’s on top of their list, and I think they’ll go hard after him.” - Mike Lombardi December 10th

www.nbcsports.com/boston/video/curran-patriots-need-be-bowled-over-offer-trade-garoppolo - Tom Curran - Mid December

According to the NFL website: Dec. 31 - Earliest permissible date for clubs to renegotiate or extend the rookie contract of a drafted rookie who was selected in any round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Any permissible renegotiated or extended player contract will not be considered a rookie contract, and will not be subject to the rules that limit rookie contracts.

Four months later, a week before the draft, the Pats pulled Jimmy off the trading block because they hadn’t received the offer they wanted. This is when John Lynch called BB and asked about his availability, then laughably asked about Tom’s availability.

BB pulled Jimmy from the trade block because the draft was a week away. You can't build your team without knowing your team needs and since nobody was biting on the first, there's no point in looking desperate. Keep Jimmy as a backup until the trade deadline and hope some other team suffers an injury at QB and gets desperate enough to trade the house.

Bottom line is nobody wanted to give up more than a 2nd, and a 2nd is what they received in return... the same return they got for Matt Cassel who had a much larger resume. The notion they got "fleeced" is garbage. The market determines the price of everything.

I said it was a crappy trade at the time. BB and Tom were both to blame.

I don't need to take it up with anyone, I said this in real-time.

Belichick gifted his friend Pioli a discount on Matt Cassel, most pats fans saw it as such.

Belichick was pissed about being forced to trade Jimmy and it's well documented he didn't shop Jimmy but instead called Lynch out of the blue asking for a 2nd rd pick instead of trying to negotiate a higher return. Lynch is on record as being shocked by it.

Who knows what Jimmy and Cassell would have netted if Belichick the GM had tried to maximize their value

Bill the GM ladies and Gentleman.

You have proof of this beyond “because I said so?”

And BB did this not once but twice, just to annoy the BB haters on Patsfans… sounds legit.

You’re conveniently leaving out the 4 months in the 2016 offseason where Jimmy was on the trade block, BB was asking for a 1st and 4th as the starting bid and nobody wanted him.

I provided three links to this above from three different sources including Schefter.
Who knows what Jimmy and Cassell would have netted if Belichick the GM had tried to maximize their value
Sure… that’s why Jay Glazer told this story how John Lynch called BB and asked about the availability of Jimmy, then asked about Tom’s availability and said BB outright laughed at him.

Maximize their value, like holding a gun to another GM’s head and force them to buy what you’re selling?

The market sets the price, that’s how the free market works.

Meanwhile right next door is a thread with people shocked Deebo Samuel was only traded for a 5th round pick… John Lynch got fleeced.

Fans are goobers, especially the haters.
