Patriots Player Departure Jimmy Garoppolo traded to SF for 2018 2nd round draft pick

So now we have no back up QB? And 1 second round pick? No other players were added?

First...that was going to happen anyway regardless of JAG, second do you really believe BB and the Pats dont have a plan? Not picking on you but a lot of folks have said the same thing and it is silly to think they would move forward without a BU QB, say hello again to Hoyer.

Do you really think that this team has any chance of winning a Super Bowl with Hoyer or any of the available options right now? Remember 2005 when Bill went into the season with Chad Brown and Monty Beisel? Or 2006 when he refused to sign a single NFL receiver and we got knocked out of the playoffs because Caldwell couldn't hold onto an easy pass? Sometimes Bill gets a little too cute in balancing the current year and the future. The defense is better, but it is still a big issue. The offense is hobbled with many injuries. Brady going down would be the death blow. JG is much better than any of the available options save for something crazy like luring Romo out of retirement.

Bill is fallible, he's human. To act like he always has a plan, no matter what, is silly. He gambled. Plain and simple.

Is it your position that the Patriots will not sign a player to serve as the backup QB?

I agree they could have gotten more perhaps earlier but the Pats have some issues that need to be addressed and JG seemed to be the one player you could move without affecting the game day 45.

To the posters who are *****ing that they could have gotten more here is what has happened since that point in time:
JE gone for season
Hightower gone for season
2nd TE not working out
Rivers IR
MM looks like will not be back
Sheamc and VV to IR
#1 CB taking longer to assimilate
Hogan injured
Jones to IR

So, what is this "They coulda" crap? All of this above happened AFTER the decision was apparently made to not trade JAG earlier in the year.
And how a second round pick helps with any of that?

How many teams draft a backup QB and break even a few years later? Usually the player is cut and the pick wasted. I don't like the timing. This is a contender. If their 40 year old QB goes down now they are done. With JG they had a chance even with a Brady injury.

I feel like BB drafts these guys (O'Connell, Mallett, Garapollo, Brissett) early for two reasons, a future trade chip, off chance they're the successor to Brady. I feel like this time more-so than any of the others Bill saw JG as the successor and if thats the case then why dump him for less than "a king's ransom? Maybe the offers really weren't there this off season but there seemed to be way too much smoke to be no fire. I feel like all the leverage was ours at draft time but now a team has to know if we're talking trade midseason that we know Jimmy is gone come March. In the end of the day we could've done far worse than Jimmy in round 2 (Jordan Richards, Tavon Wilson, Chad Jackson, Terrence Wheatley...) but it's still hard not to feel like we misplayed our hand.

It's like seeing a stock shoot up 5 times in value, but then selling for what you bought it for 3 years later. Yes, you might be right to sell it at that point because you expect the company to go bankrupt, but the truth is that through the power of hindsight you should have sold at 5x the price.

I highly doubt he was available to sell at five times the price. And they almost moved up a whole round in terms of trade value, plus got 3.5 years of back up value from him. The back up value can't be discounted.

Rappaport tweeted Cleveland DID NOT offer first rounder... But Giardi on CSN right now seeing that "a better offer was available in the off-season"...

No I am just asking questions, I didn't feel like rummaging through 26 pages. I guess I don't really understand.. we traded both are back up QB's now. Are we going to flip the pick for someone else? Because if not why didn't we trade him in the off season.

I am completely lost.

And it was cheap backup also.

Well if Jimmy was good enough to forgo at least a first for to gamble on the 8 games to sign him, why not just gamble out the season.

This makes no sense. I'm pretty sure he could have gottne a second for jg before the draft and would have a backup in briscet and not traded him to indy. This whole thing seems azz backwards.

The fact that Hoyer is out there has been pointed out about a billion times already. The reports that Hoyer was going to be part of the deal originally are here in the thread, and that demonstrates a likely avenue to look for your backup QB.

That's going under the big assumption that someone actually offered a first for him.

Just seeing the headline "blockbuster trade" on the side of the site is triggering me.

The only side that got a "blockbuster" player/asset was the 49ers.

Agreed. Be at peace, those of you fretting:

"One of the first thoughts that comes to mind following the Patriots reportedly trading Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers for a 2018 second-round pick is what happened to all the first-rounders the Patriots were supposedly offered around the draft by the Browns?

At the time, the thought was the Browns were offering at least one first-round pick with even up to four, according to Adam Schefter. Well, apparently that wasn't the case.

According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, the Browns never offered the Patriots a first-round pick. It was a second-round pick and change.

The Patriots waited and got the 49ers' second-round pick, which will be one of the first couple in the second round with them starting 0-7, so basically a late first-rounder."
