Patriots Player Departure Jimmy Garoppolo traded to SF for 2018 2nd round draft pick

Agree, the level of stupid in this thread is comical. This is worse than a game day thread. I see a lot of posters who dont post much who obviously dont really understand football, whining.

JAG hasnt dont **** and in 8 games would have been gone. And to the idiots who are whining that they thought a good player would be coming back, you need to learn that a pick can be traded for a player and there is a good chance the pats will do just that.

There was no 2 firsts for JAG. Matt Cassell was a more proven QB. What did they get for him?

  1. They had a first on the table, sort of, for Cassel, so the whole "they couldn't have gotten" argument is being overplayed and is, quite possibly, completely wrong. However,
  2. Given the current situation, and the fact that they probably weren't going to be tagging and trading JAG in a year where everyone has been saying there are a bunch of franchise QBs in the draft, they got a decent return for him. Most people complaining are probably still thinking as if it's the day before the 2017 draft.

I laugh at everyone who thinks Jimmy's return value (A 2nd round pick) was exactly the same as it would have been in the off-season.

Belichick waiting 8 weeks, unquestionably, led to the value of the asset dropping and therefore was a mistake.
Maybe us losing one of of best defensive players and a starting corner taking a bit longer to get it, and the O stalling a big made BB think this is time to make a move and improve the team. You know the players on the field, not standing on the sidelines.

You can laugh all you want but it dosent change the fact that a move had to be made and JG wasnt playing.

Just adding my 2 cents to this surprising trade.

1. As far as the compensation goes, I think its very fair. Once they made the decision to keep JG after the draft, getting more than what turns out to be the 33-36 range is about as good as we could have hoped to get if we held him the entire year. Just because we got the same value with Cassell. Remember anyone who was willing to wait just a few days could be in the bidding for JG and have to give back nothing.

So I'm happy with the compensation. Value wise (according to some draft geeks, everyone from 25 to 40 are of the same quality.

2. Nice move for JG - in one sense. He will have zero expectations for the rest of the season. The 49ers have very little offensive talent, but supposedly have good coaching plenty of patience. The rest of the season for JG will be nothing more than an extended preseason for him.

3. He's also out of the conference /

4. You have to think Brian Hoyer is the immediate answer for the back up roll here. Not sure I understand the Kapernick talk. If ever a QB was NOT a system fit, it would be Kap.

5. Personally I was hoping the Cleveland rumors were true. I really wanted that #12 pick. Cleveland ultimately picked very badly.

6. People who are going to complain about getting only a 2nd for him after drafting him in 2nd are forgetting the vast difference in WHERE we will be picking in that round. There is a good chance that that SF pick wil get us a pick who had a first round grade. That can't be said of the 2nd round pick at the end of that round

Seems straightforward to me. BB traded an asset that was selected at 62 and traded it for a high second round pick in a draft that has good QB value.

No matter what pundits or fans thought, JG was not going to net a first or multiple firsts midway thru a regular season.
Or any other time after playing a total of 6 nfl quarters.

Hopefully Josh Allen falls all the way to the bottom of the first round. Timeline is perfect for him. Has excellent tools but needs serious development, Brady plays for another two to three years while Allen sits behind Brady and learn. Allen takes over while Brady retires after that.

Gilmore screws us again. It became clear the Pats needed to sign Butler, and no longer had the money to sign Jimmy G too. (I'm only half joking)

The Patriots gained nothing out of keeping him for 8 more weeks. Belichick's indecisiveness to pull the trigger here cost the team return value.
It's like seeing a stock shoot up 5 times in value, but then selling for what you bought it for 3 years later. Yes, you might be right to sell it at that point because you expect the company to go bankrupt, but the truth is that through the power of hindsight you should have sold at 5x the price.

I ****ing hate this trade.

Unless you believe that just about every NFL insider was lying/misled that we could have got a first round pick (if not TWO) from the Browns (aka GOLDEN first round picks), then Belichick ****ed this asset up big time.

We gave up HUGE return value in exchange for an extra 8 weeks of Jimmy holding on to a clipboard on the sidelines.

At the end, this came down to BB potentially doubting if Brady could keep it up again this year (answer: he could) and once that was finally decided, THEN he felt safe in getting rid of Jimmy.
Getting a 1 or any more was a rumor. It was never reported that it was actually offered.

No way he could've been traded in the offseason. He'd be a free agent.
Like they did with cassell?
They franchised Cassel to make sure Brady was recovered from his knee repair. They wouldn't franchise JAG this year, he does not have an eleven win season as starter to his credit so it would undermine his trade value.

I am still digesting the news that the Niners called about Brady, not JG. I guess ole Kyle does not want to relive the nightmare that was SB51.
Where was this reported they called about Brady?

Except now the niners don't need to tank for a franchise qb and could very well win 3 or 4 more.

He's a free agent at the end of the year.

I don't believe that teams (except the Colts) actually tank for picks.

Yea shortly after the trade I began checking him out, seems like a good fit for our offense, I'm gonna check some of the other QBs in next years draft as well tomorrow, do you think BB could fix Blake Bortles? I remember someone pitched the idea before, I would sign him to something low after this season I doubt Jags keep him

They gained 8 weeks of insurance for s Brady injury.
It is not a certainty at all that they lost anything.

I agree they could have gotten more perhaps earlier but the Pats have some issues that need to be addressed and JG seemed to be the one player you could move without affecting the game day 45.

To the posters who are *****ing that they could have gotten more here is what has happened since that point in time:
JE gone for season
Hightower gone for season
2nd TE not working out
Rivers IR
MM looks like will not be back
Sheamc and VV to IR
#1 CB taking longer to assimilate
Hogan injured
Jones to IR

So, what is this "They coulda" crap? All of this above happened AFTER the decision was apparently made to not trade JAG earlier in the year.
