Is It Time For Edelman To Go?

The quantity of them is meaningless because they are competing for one job. The quality is intriguing because it does appear that we expect a role to be filled by one of them

A little over half the guys on the roster of 90 will get jobs. So it would be odd to use multiple slots on a position group that will end up with 0 jobs among them.

The New England Patriots will not be as competitive without a punt returner and kick off returner on the roster. The New England Patriots offense can and will function at peak performance without a fullback on the roster.

I think Edelperson could be OUR Tebow!! :bricks:

speaking of which...did you SEE that Tebow press conference this afternoon?

I realize I am biased and prejudiced when it comes to the Rats BUT how in the world can ANY fan watch that circus and not know what's coming?... "uh...how about we put him as the up back on punts?? yeah...we'll use him as the holder!"...I read Rat fans post all these missives filled with denial and I have to think, they CANNOT see the obvious...that press conference was LeBron/D.Wade redux in scope...the Rats obviously wanted to put him right out front from the start...only a deaf ,dumb, blind ,stranded space alien can't see what's coming. I wonder if Sanchez can? He HAS to know...c'mon, he's seen the media in NY...he's already been played by Tannenbaum and Wrecks in that Peyton chase fiasco..

I would say we need him for returns, but I thought the same thing about Hobbs, an hour before BB traded him

Seriously, you could not write a better script!

Will a FB on the roster help at all relative to not having one? If so then the offense will not be at peak performance without one. How many RBs did we carry last season? Are you really telling me if one of them blocks a lot and is used in short yardage situations we'll take steps backwards?

A short yardage back or a fullback as our #5 running back is an improvement over recent years.

Haven't read through the whole whole thread but here's my thoughts:

Edelman has clearly struggled as a WR and will never develop into much of one. However Edelman could easily beat out 3 of Branch (age), Stallworth (anything in the tank?), Gonzales (learning the offense), Ocho (learning the offense) and Underwood (general suckage). If he plays WR at a similar level and provides flexibility others do not he will make the roster.

Also it's no given we draft a WR early, if at all. Yes it would be nice to have guys devloping for the future but BB will draft depending on who is taken in front of him. It's very possible we don't draft a WR especially since it is less of a need than other positions.

I believe in "War Room" it's stated the a potential draftee's value depends on who he would replace. This would lower the value of any WR prospect compared to a defensive prospect.

Which is why having 2 good FBs plus Kettani, tells me there will be competition for 1 job.

I think its a really safe bet we will have a punt returned and kick returner.
Letting the kicked ball bounce around on the field because we have no returner is not a good idea. I would like to point out to you that there are many people not named Edleman capable of returning kicks.
I think that BB is telling you that the offense will NOT functoin at peak perfomrnace without a FB by making these moves. Perhpas you should take your complaint up with him, becuase he is the one making the moves, I am just stating the obvious conclusion

Last I knew Edelman was able to effectively contribute on offense, defense, and offensive and defensive special teams. I have never believed that Edelman could adequately replace Welker but he's definitely a valuable player, and to this point I don't see anyone replacing him on the roster. Ocho will be long gone before they even consider getting rid of Welker. Is it possible he could be released, of course, is it likely, no, but if they do then it means Belichick has created an unbelievably deep roster because Welker is a good player with exceptional versatility.

Right now, take your choice either Edelman or one of the fullbacks.

The New England Patriots offense has scored over 500 points in the last two seasons without a prime time fullback. There is no guarantee that either fullback will on the 53 man roster come September.

I dont have to, last seasopn we carried Edelman and several RBs, make one of those backs a FB and you're set.

That doesn't mean it wouldn't score more with a FB. You could have replaced 85, Underwood, Edelman, Thomas, Vereen, Faulk, Mallett, among others with a FB last year, and they would have scored more points.

Underwood and Ochocinco were practically useless last season. Last season, Edelman was more valuable than Underwood and Ochocinco combined.

I have a hard time believing Gonzalez is going to have a significantly better camp than Edelman. Julian is what he is, a solid depth receiver that can contribute on special teams. If there is a resonating feeling that he never hit his potential I think we can turn the finger around and point it at ourselves for letting a couple good games dictate what we think he should be doing on a weekly basis.

There are a lot worse ways to use a roster spot and I imagine him making the 53 next year.

Well that isn't the choice, but if it were, I'd definitely take the FB.
