IR - The Key To Final Cuts To Our 55-man Roster

Seems like a good place to stick this:

Nick Cattles was discussing Elijah Ponder this morning and pointed out how effusive LBs coach Mike Smith was when discussing Ponder.

Made it sound like Ponder is a lock.

Yeah and you don't chat up guys you're trying to sneak through to the Practice Squad for that matter either.

I've liked this kid from the start so was glad to hear his comments.

Overall to me it might make the most sense to put Bourne on IR with the potential of him coming off if they need WR depth later in the season.

I guess the "good" news is that they have the cap space to absorb cuts like Dugger if it comes to it, let alone Bourne

See my post above; here's the full text that was released:

That’s very helpful. But still someone’s synopsis of the rules, not the actual rules themselves. And there are still some questions:
Three key points:

• These only apply for 2024 unless extended.
• Teams making the playoffs get an additional two DTRs that can be used in the postseason, in addition to any still remaining.
• Most importantly, teams can now make two DTR designations on cutdown day.

This last change is the most important one. Under the current rules, the price to DTR a player who got injured in the preseason was that you had to waive a healthy player (and likely hope they could clear waivers/not get picked up by another team) to do so. Now, that's no longer the case unless a team has to DTR 3+ players. I am all for it.

#1: were they extended?

#3: must those DTR designations be of players placed on IR on cutdown day, or can they be any players placed on IR during preseason? I’ve seen conflicting claims stating one or the other, and the old Bylaws I found were ambiguous on that point. I’ve been unable to find the precise language in the current Bylaws or recent changes to them.

#1. AFAIK, yes, they were extended. Nobody has reported otherwise.

#3. The text in the memo I posted earlier (which is also cited in the link) is the actual text of the agreement. The two boldfaced clauses are extremely hard to interpret as allowing DTR for players already on IR before cutdown day.

Mod Edit: here is the full text:

You are 100% right, the language is extremely clear. Anyone placed on IR already is ineligible for the DTR designation. Only any 2 players placed on IR on cutdown day - and explicitly designated as DTR at that time - are eligible.

And if they want to allow a 3rd person to come back — not someone who already is on IR — they have to do the old song and dance routine with them of keeping them on the initial 53, and placing them on IR the next day.

This thread is hurting my head. First of all. Sidy Sow is not injured as he was present at practice on Tuesday (per Greg Bedard’s practice report listings players not participating). So, unless misfortune befalls him tomorrow night or a future practice, he’s not eligible for the IR.

The “DTR” designation is not assigned when a player is placed on IR even for the 2 players a team is allowed to IR on cutdown day. The rule was originally implemented that way, but, as a wise man who didn’t claim to be a doctor often pointed out, there’s really no set timetable on how players recover from injuries, so why make a team use one of a limited number of return designations on a player who’s groin injury never heals well enough to play.

So, the rule was changed after the first season. The designation is assigned now when a player returns to practice in hopes to be activated to the 53 man roster. It can only be applied to the 2 players IR’d at cutdown and players IR’d after cutdown. A team has 8 regular season designations and 2 in the postseason. A player can be designated twice per season as well.

The "DTR on cutdown day" rule was introduced just last year. According to Eagles assistant GM Jon Ferrari, they made the 2024 version of the rule permanent.

I know Larson was reported as a broken foot and Dial an ACL. any report on what actually happened to Lampe?

In addition, the bolded is incorrect. Straight from the NFL’s memo: “Such designation must be reported at the time of the Reserve List placement….” And if you read the text around that, it will be clear that it relates to the 2 guys placed on IR at cutdown. A guy placed on IR after the season begins doesn’t need to be designated right away anymore, that is correct, but these 2 players do.

Ok, thanks. I was confused because I’d not expected a journalist like Pelissero to be posting the official agreement itself.

Given how easy it is to do on Xitter and Bluesky, you'd be surprised how often they do post the documents these days.

I’ve looked for a copy of the current NFL Bylaws with no success. Most current I’ve found was 2016, and I’ve seen others report the same. Seems to be hit or miss.
