I think concerns about Boutte are mostly about coachability and motivation, but the concerns about Baker run deeper. Bedard seems to think he’s a ticking time bomb.
The gambling charges are no indicator of reason for concern?
TBH that ranks pretty low on my scale for off-field transgressions. Besides, the charges got dropped.
no, not at all.
Or maybe not an addiction, maybe he’s making book by making book….According to an article recently posted here it was a ridiculous amount of bets. About 5 thousand bets if memory serves right---and that's just what they could find. Given his age when this happened, it means he placed at least 5 thousand bets in a very short time.
That kind of gambling addiction is no joke.
So a kid with questions about motivation and coachability goes making lots of bets for other people when he knows gambling is forbidden and it’s no big deal?Except it was almost certainly other people betting THROUGH him, or more likely even, through his computer without anything on his part. Probably why the whole thing was dropped.
I agree. If Schuster looks good in camp-trade him. There’s a strong likelihood he will break down again, so try to pick up a mid round pick for him, and go with the young guys, or use his spot to keep a player at a different position that they really don’t want to release.
If Schuster looks good in camp (top 3), it would seem somehow wrong to lose cap money to cut him.
One option is to trade Osborn. As another posted noted, Osborn was sign to a 1-year contract when we had almost no one. Since then, we've added Polk and Baker, plus Shuster is looking good (and perhaps even Thornton is looking good).
We have Bourne and the 3 kids. We have room for one veteran to be a starting WR. There is no need for any more WR's unless we keep someone while Bourne is not yet available.
My point was that there's a decent possibility that his computer was hacked and was acting as a bot doing all this stuff without his knowledge. WHich would explain why they dropped ALL the charges. That being said, there are other character issues with him, and he hasn't done anything to impress me to date.Or maybe not an addiction, maybe he’s making book by making book….

His judgment isn’t demonstrably poor?
His choice of associates is unimpeachable?
Possibility he was running an illegal bookmaking shop by placing bets for other people is NBD?
Sheesh. Talk about ignoring red flags.

Yeah, he made mistakes, so you dont draft him high, you draft him late.Or maybe not an addiction, maybe he’s making book by making book….

If you offered my Aiyuk or Higgins for money alone, maybe… I’m still not paying him Justin Jefferson money. You’re acting like this is cheap and easy… it’s neither.doesn't that cry out even more so for a WR like Aiyuk, Higgins? Especially if the cost is a 3rd? or a 2026 2nd?
play Polk, Pop, Baker and Aiyuk day 1 WITH Maye. let the new offense start rolling immediately
finish the offense next season with a LT drafted in rd 1

If the team believes that character is no longer an issue, Boutte can compete for the roster. All he has to do is do beat out Schuster, Thornton, and Reagor to be the #6 WR, and that's only if there is a #6. NOT!That's unlikely as you have to pony up real dollars. Seems like he lost a significant amount here, which suggests he was betting at least partly on behalf of others. According to court documents, he bet a total of $450,000, losing $65,000, in 2022. He bet $186,000, losing $16,000, in 2023.
"Barbera said in a statement that while there is "undisputed evidence" Boutte made underage bets, no one suffered financial loss as a result and he did not bet against himself or LSU's football team."

….there are many scenarios as likely as the JJ propostion suggested in this thread.
Never seen a choir boy that ended up being a great player!
I hope to be surprised by JJ and that he ends up contributing. But - at this point - I really can’t see him having any success. Rebuilding team with a bridge QB (or very inexperienced QB), after a poor year, with potentially suspect OL (especially LT)…fair enough
One scenario is that Bourne is on the PUP list and Schuster is kept on the 53 as our 5th WR until the trade deadline or until Bourne comes back. That way, we will have longer to find a trade if one isn't made before Game One. This isn't relevant to any decision regarding whether we want to keep 6 WR's. Schuster would simply be a short-time replacement for Bourne.
If you think that this scenario (along with others) total a one in a zillion event, then that is your personal analysis.
That's 3 great players out of at least 100Calvin Johnson
Larry Fitzgerald
Julio Jones
This is just off the top of my head, but here’s 7 current NFC WRs that I think can be considered great players, who have done nothing but produce on the field and have been the best guy at the position for their teams. I don’t know what is meant by “choir boy” but the only thing I know of that is “negative” for any of them is in a few cases they had to go public to seek a better deal for themselves when they’ve earned it and know that’s how that part of the game is played in the NFLThat's 3 great players out of at least 100

I see WR as pretty simple:
Polk, Baker, and Douglas aren't going anywhere.
That leaves 2 maybe 3 spots for everyone else. Individually we all have our favorites and guys we are ready to move on from but at the end of the day none of the rest are so good or so healthy that they will definitely make it.
It's an open competition and given our salary cap space now and in the coming years I don't see this as a major reason to choose or to cut anyone.
May the best players win.
Actual play time gets a lot more tricky. Douglas gets a lot I think is all we know for sure. Hopefully one of the rookies developes quickly otherwise a large number of snaps might have to come out of that second group of guys who aren't even locks.
