Bedard is a grump. He gets asked questions and at least 3-4 times he replies with, "What do you want me to say?"

Actually, now that I have time to think about it, without him using any facts to back it up, this is a BS take. If the Pats lose Gilmore, the defense isn’t affected? How does anyone know? If Gilmore goes down for real, Bedard is still saying that? “Oh they’re fine, nothing to worry about”...

I don't, Ken... you're misinterpreting me. And Tuesdays at 2pm has been appointment listening for me for a while now. I'm not saying his analysis was off or even wrong. I'm saying it was nasty and deliberately negative. It's like he's trying to follow the Felger/Mazz 'piss everybody off to get attention' scheme.

Example: his comments on Gilmore. They were also dismissive, to the point where I believe he said the Pats defense wouldn't skip a beat WITHOUT Gilmore. That's clearly provocative. (which was also apparent in his tone)

BUT... it wasn't backed up with anything: stats, comps... just seemed like a deliberate troll IMHO.

Which I guess worked, because here I am complaining about it. d%#*!@t! Get that fish hook out of my lip! LOL

I guess its all in the ear of the beholder. I didn't get that supposed diss of Gilmore at all. In fact I agreed with what he said. Back in the day Revis (for that one year) and Law (for several of his years) were on secondaries and defenses that were more dependent of their high end play, while Bedard thinks that Gilmore, while just as great, is part of a far more competent secondary and overall defense, hence has less of an importance to the D. I my pretty sure Bedard isn't saying that Gilmore is any less of a player just because he's on a better defense. If you switched Law and Gilmore to their time periods, maybe Gilmore get more credit.

All that aside, Gilmore is not only making the case that he's the best CB in the league, he's making a case that he's the Defensive Player of the Year. And if you ask Bedard about it, he'd probably agree. Still a third of the "preseason" to go and we shall see

I agree with DI on this. Here's the thing. You don't have to always agree with someone's point of view to like him. I'm a subscriber, and Bedard pisses me off on occasion, but so WHAT! What I appreciate about Bedard is that he give an opinion and THEN backs it up with facts that support his position. He doesn't just spout out opinions just to troll them. These are things he BELIEVES in. If I disagree, he will argue his point honestly and never blows people off who are willing to back up their own point of view with data. That's all you can ask of a reporter/analyst. Why would you want to hear from someone who just tells you what you want to hear.

God help us if we ever get the media that some of you are looking for. It you want mindless homerism, just start rooting for the Colts and pickup the Indy Star. One of the great joys of being a Boston sports fan is that the media has opinions isn’t afraid to criticize. It’s actually healthy for the teams and keeps the players from getting big headed and complacent.

Bedard is 1/2 right and 1/2 wrong.

Will the Pats D still be pretty good w/o Gilly? Yes. Between JC, JMc, JJ and pick a UFA du jour they'd have enough talent to do well.

Will the be as good as they are now? Hell no.

I think Greg does a good job, and there are going to be times where he'll criticize the team or player, but he usually backs it up with analysis and reasoning and it's typically fairly measured. I'm good with that, since like others have mentioned, it's not enjoyable to read 10 different angles of the same story. He tends to point out little nuances and things that not all of us see, and overall he's pretty solid at what he does.

I will say that I like him more as a writer and less as a radio personality because Felger and Mazz do tend to have that type of effect on people. That's not Bedard-specific, but he does fall into their trap and as I've mentioned before, it brings out the worst in him. But I do enjoy his writing and analysis and don't mind him being critical given his approach. He's not Shaughnessy or someone like that just doing it to get a rise out of people. He writes it exactly how he's thinking about it and he generally gives a reasonable take as to why he feels that way, which makes the majority of his stuff is usually a pretty good read.

And as far as this place having to be positive, I'll be the first to say that doesn't need to be the case at all. As I've said before, people are fine to criticize a player as long as you can provide reasons as to why you feel that way. But saying over and over "(player) sucks" or "this team isn't going to win anything" without offering up a reasonable take as to why isn't helpful and it obviously gets old. If you think a player stinks, tell us why. If you think the team will lose or won't go anywhere, tell us why. It's like many have said, saying "get rid of that guy" without tell us how you'd replace them doesn't make much of a productive discussion. But if you can do that, criticize away.

However, be prepared for a little bit of backlash and criticism if you're wrong. That also comes with the territory

But as for Bedard, that's my take. It's perfectly fine for people not to like him, but when you think about the current list of reporters in this region, he certainly provides better analysis than many of them, even if you don't always necessarily agree with what he writes.
