We have no idea what this guy has to do to control himself every day. He may be putting more effort into it than most of us, but with bigger challenges. Or, not. There's no way to know.

And just when I was revving up for a nasty post about Jones...thanks for the reminder.

On the other hand, a civilized society has to draw lines. Spitting on another person clearly crosses one of those lines.

But, understanding what drove a particular behavior can play a role in how it is punished. In Jones' case, we're not dealing with a "first time offender," so I'm less inclined to argue for leniency and more inclined to think that, if the facts are as stated, he should be punished as the law allows.

But, the real questions are more complex.

Did those close to him enable him or try to get him help?
If they tried to get him help, was he receptive?
If he wasn't receptive, why did they keep him on the team?
If he was receptive, was this a "slip" or part of a pattern that enablers helped him to hide?
However, it's nearly impossible for a Judge to balance all those factors, especially when the Judge is dealing with a repeat offender.

Oh, I agree entirely. Society needs to be kept safe, so we need to do whatever it takes to stop people from doing harmful stuff.

The issue, to me, is whether we respond out of fear, anger, and revenge (the reptilian brain) or try to understand what's actually going on and respond from there.

This guy's rapsheet is longer than a Dostoevsky novel. It has been well over a decade of this happening.

He is either a) ill and needs immediate and humane help or b) needs to go away.

It is NOT "reptilian" at this point to know that "letting him be him" just because he is a skilled player is simply Fake Humanitarianism. It helps neither him nor society to merely say "let us try to understand him".

You're probably right, but, isn't "whom it is" grammatically incorrect since "it is" doesn't take the objective case? Oh, never mind. Not worth the time.

"Whom it is" would be incorrect if it was describing the subject (actor) of the sentence, not the object (one being acted upon). So in ""Hey, pacman, watch who it is that you call garbage," the word "watch" in your sentence effectively wiped out the subject and turned it into an object because an action was being done to that person.

Gawd, I hate Grammar Nazis.
