Hey Pacman, Watch Whom YOU Call "Garbage"!!!!!!

Thank you. I used to be a Linguist/Translator for the US Government years ago. Our intramural softball team name was The Cunning Linguists.

Love the softball name. The daughter I mention above worked on the staff of Senator Tim Johnson, and they wanted to name their team 'The Swinging Johnsons" but were told no.

Suspend Brady 4 games for Jones's actions. It's the ONLY fair thing to do.....right ****ell?

Having watched my stepdaughter struggle through her neurological challenges, which included outbursts of violent and rude behavior, to no fault of her own, I tend to be fairly forgiving of impulsive or radical behavior in others.

Human brains are remarkable things. I've only had one, but from what I have seen, they are highly variable. A pudding of chemicals, wiring, and electricity. The purely theoretical idea of "free will" that we hold dear to our hearts may be entirely a mirage. It will be a long time before we know, if ever.

We have no idea what this guy has to do to control himself every day. He may be putting more effort into it than most of us, but with bigger challenges. Or, not. There's no way to know.
We are not going to be more patient with criminals or NFL players because "maybe they're wired wrong"

Unacceptable is unacceptable still.

I have to act within a certain acceptable range in my job. No one at my company cares if it's harder for me to do that than most people.

I'll withhold judgment until we know the real story. "Assault on a police officer" can be whatever the cop wants.

Pacman Jones was used by Fraudger to come down hard on the Pats in 2007 for next to nothing. He had just suspended Jones for a whole season and one other player for half of a season and got pressured into fining Belichick and the Pats. Kraft and the owners agreed and Spygate was born.

And just when I was revving up for a nasty post about Jones...thanks for the reminder.

On the other hand, a civilized society has to draw lines. Spitting on another person clearly crosses one of those lines.

But, understanding what drove a particular behavior can play a role in how it is punished. In Jones' case, we're not dealing with a "first time offender," so I'm less inclined to argue for leniency and more inclined to think that, if the facts are as stated, he should be punished as the law allows.

But, the real questions are more complex.

Did those close to him enable him or try to get him help?
If they tried to get him help, was he receptive?
If he wasn't receptive, why did they keep him on the team?
If he was receptive, was this a "slip" or part of a pattern that enablers helped him to hide?
However, it's nearly impossible for a Judge to balance all those factors, especially when the Judge is dealing with a repeat offender.

Oh, I agree entirely. Society needs to be kept safe, so we need to do whatever it takes to stop people from doing harmful stuff.

The issue, to me, is whether we respond out of fear, anger, and revenge (the reptilian brain) or try to understand what's actually going on and respond from there.

Unfortunately, so far, only the THIRD option has been employed: Lazy Enablement

This guy's rapsheet is longer than a Dostoevsky novel. It has been well over a decade of this happening.

He is either a) ill and needs immediate and humane help or b) needs to go away.

It is NOT "reptilian" at this point to know that "letting him be him" just because he is a skilled player is simply Fake Humanitarianism. It helps neither him nor society to merely say "let us try to understand him".

Question 1: Good question, but I still think it would be "whom", for it is the object of "watch".

Question 2: CIA??? He won't waste a thought on them. He relies on the National Enquirer, silly.
You're probably right, but, isn't "whom it is" grammatically incorrect since "it is" doesn't take the objective case? Oh, never mind. Not worth the time.

Agree on two.

"Whom it is" would be incorrect if it was describing the subject (actor) of the sentence, not the object (one being acted upon). So in ""Hey, pacman, watch who it is that you call garbage," the word "watch" in your sentence effectively wiped out the subject and turned it into an object because an action was being done to that person.

Gawd, I hate Grammar Nazis.

you capitalized grammar...50 demerits
