Gronk deal reworked: 1M pg bonus + 3.3M inc

Gronk got his mind right and Boss Belichick rewarded him.

How long before big mouth Shannon Sharpe starts a chitstorm that Gronk is worth more?

Those numbers might be difficult for him to hit once he gets suspended for two weeks for tossing Ramsey into the bleachers
I'd give you three "winners" for that outstanding post.

Glad both sides worked something out.

Time to play ball.

This was the right thing to do. He's worth the money. If it makes him happier player and a believer in the idea that if he does well here that he will be fairly rewarded for it in the end. That is a plus.

It sucks to lose the cap space but he deserves it. If you see the list of offensive skill players being paid more than him you would laugh at what a steal a deal like this appears to be by comparison.

As far as the cap space. Jason McCourty being cut would save the Pats. about 2.5M and Gillislee being cut would save about 1.4M. Not that they couldn't afford to pay this in either case. But it's nice to see it would likely just be offset easily by these moves.

Miguel says it lowers the cap by 875k.

Did we ever get the yearly cap breakdown on the Mason deal? Unless that's super backloaded (or doesn't kick in at all this year) I would think this puts us over the cap.

These are considered "not likely to be earned" (precisely because he didn't hit any of them last year), except for 14/16 of the per-game bonus, so they don't count against the cap right now. They hit as soon as they're earned, and, if they put the team over the cap, are borrowed against next year's cap.

Hit as soon as they are earned? Is that an adjustment to cap mechanics?
I thought NLTBE always counted against the next year and LTBE always against the current year.

BB always for that extra yard;) .. more importantly NLTB so no extra 2018 cap hit for inc

Perhaps worth noting that his 69 - 1,084 - 8 stat line last year was achieved in 14 games. Actually 13 games if you consider that he wasn't targeted at all in the regular season finale.

In terms of health, one of his two inactive games was from a team suspension. The other when he was dinged up in a Sunday game heading into a short week and wasn't quite able to go by Thursday.

IOW, if Gronk plays the full 16 games, those incentive marks seem easily within reach.

Hmm. McCarron not playing stood out as well as Gillislee.

As @long distance pointed out in the "what to watch for" thread, it's possible that a couple guys are being held out because they're about to be traded. That seems unlikely (to me) to apply to McCarron or Gillislee, though.

McCarron is really the only healthy, half-way competent WR left on the roster, and he's also a PR. It's also notable that Cy Jones wasn't included in the "not likely to play" list.

Gillislee could be part of a trade -or- it could be that Burkhead is on his way to IR/Eligible to Return.

Thats the point of this deals of course - make them NLTB and well within one's production on a healthy season.

“If you have your normal healthy season we're happy to pay. If you don't it hurts a little bit less..“

Maybe. But he will hit at least one if his incentives you would think. It would be hard to believe this doesn't have him being paid more than he would have been by the end of the year.

That's odd. Unless Michel is going on the PUP there is no way Gillislee makes the roster IMO. Maybe they just are doing it as a favor to a vet. He will get work somewhere and there is no reason for him to get himself hurt in the last game. It isn't like he needs to put anything new on tape. Teams know what he can and can't do.

As for McCarron, maybe trying to stash him on to the PS and keeping him under the radar?

Holley on pregame saying Gronk should not be happy with his new deal. Curran (I think he had an embolism recently) and Breer(of course) both agree.

Any chance burkhead ends up going on PUP instead of michel? Has Rex even returned to practice yet?
